Partly my fault that I pitched with my habitation door facing the my camping neighbour's; and the pitch was narrow in that I was not able to extend my wind-out awning fully for the pegs to be within my pitch boundary!
The first two sets of camping neighbours did not mind, however, the third who arrived late at night, might have caused the damages to my awning pegs in that one was bent and lifted out of the ground, and the other was bent. I do not know if they did it, however, I highly suspected they did. I managed to straighten the pegs and drove them into the very hard ground again while they were out. They avoided me for the rest of the day and left the following morning.
Some of the pitches were glorified parking spaces!
The facilities block was modern, clean and well-kept. However, I could not find facilities that were accessible by wheelchair users.
There was a kitchen area equipped with a kettle and 2-burner induction hobs for campers to use.
There was a shop and a coffee shop on site, selling basic provisions and plenty of beers including local ones. And also plenty of cold drinks and ice creams - much needed during the hot weather.
There was a river and park nearby for dog walks, handy when they stipulated marking/fouling was to be avoided on their website.
Lots of locals were making the most of the river during the heatwave with day time temperatures reaching mid 30degC!
The best thing about this campsite was the restaurant and beer garden next door offering different menus; both highly recommended. They played one of the Germany's World Cup games during my stay on a big screen which was well-attended.
I came here to meet up with an ex-boss and friend who lives near Basal, and we had a nice meal at the restaurant.
Very proactive in their recycling with lots of bins for different types of packaging.
Washing machine was 5 EUR a load via a token purchased at the Reception.
Motorhome service point was a drain near the facilities block where one could find a water hose to fill up. Be prepared to queue to get in or out if a badly parked van decides to dump its grey waste as the entrance to the site is not very wide.
There was a separate CDP though within the facilities block.
I did not venture out into the town, only to the park nearby as it was too hot during my stay. According to my ex-boss and friend, Freiburg is a nice town and his family would go there for a visit from time to time.
I arrived around 14:00 to find they were closed between 13:00 to 15:00, and went to the restaurant for a drink until they opened.
All in all, apart from the narrow and very hard pitch, and I have learnt my lesson to observe how my camping neighbours are parked before pitching up; it was a pleasant enough stay, saved by the restaurant and beer garden next door.
We absolutely loved this campsite. We stayed for a week, but could have stayed much longer. I thought that being walking distance to the City Centre would mean that the campsite is situated in an uninteresting suburb. I couldn't have been more wrong.
Frieburg is situated along the river, which then backs on to an almost endless space for every kind of sporting activities. There is a walking/running path, left and right out of the campsite and a cycling superhighway parallel to this where every type of bike could be seen and cyclist. We walked and cycled into the city most days, it was very easy. There was a heatwave we were there, so everyone gravitated towards the river. Its not deep enough for swimming, but great for splashing around and cooling down. It was crystal clear.
Thr city has crystal clear water running through little canals in the Old Town. Children were sailing little boats there and people were cooling their feet in the water. Its not every city that its safe for children to play in the drains! However, Freiburg is a city like no other, really beautiful, he focus is on providing a clean, safe, healthy, sustainable city. The Cathrderal is amazing. The Brotwurst on sale in the stands in the square outside is not to be missed.
We cycled out to the village of Kirchzarten, a nice off-road cycle. We drove to Titisee, a lovely lake in the Black Forest, its very touristy, but lovely for swimming. The village of Friedenweiler, about 8 km from Titisee, has a lovely small lake and swimming pool complex with lots of activities to do on the lake.
The campsite itself is perfectly formed, medium sized, with the reception, shop, bathrooms, washing and lounge with cooking facilities all in the one block. They serve very nice coffee there. There's a restaurant next door, which has a great beer garden.
The people on the campsite couldn't have been nicer. A truck hit our side mirror when we were driving there. The manager went out of his way to help us, we were really impressed.
Couldn't recommend Freiburg and the Black Forest enough. via mobile
As with most urban sites, it feels cramped but there are lovely mature trees and the facilities are extensive, bright and clean. The surrounding streets are quiet and it’s adjacent to a hilly wooded area.
In my dealings with the site before my arrival, I remarked to several people how exceptionally friendly, attentive and helpful the staff were.
Ironically, the youngish man who greeted us on arrival was exceptionally rude and barked, ‘Park there for an hour, I’m going to have lunch. ’ When he finally deigned to see us, he rudely refused to implement the ACSI discount as I hadn’t mentioned ACSI when I booked. Other sites have simply readjusted their prices when I produced the card.
I was by no means the only customer to be treated abruptly and dismissively.
This behaviour is particularly unfortunate given how lovely the others I dealt with were.
We stayed for one night on our way back north but wish we had had more time to stay at Hirzburg campsite and enjoy the lovely town of Freiburg. We did have to pay an extra 10 euros as it’s a minimum 2 nights stay stay.
An easy and pleasant 20 min walk through a quiet leafy suburb brought us to the lovely old town and the delightful shops.
The campsite is very well maintained and the staff very helpful and friendly. They came round with a blower to clear our pitch of the Autumn leaves.
All areas are clean and the shower blocks modern and well equipped. There’s a good restaurant right next to the site.
We will return next time we are in the area via mobile
30 mins walk from old city centre, < 10 mins by bike if you cycle and park near Schawbentor gate and walk 5 mins through this beautiful city to the munster area.
Yes plots are relatively small but they are adequate and services are good.
Go somewhere else if you wish to sit outside your motorhome all day but a very convenient site to see Freiburg. via mobile
This was the 4th campsite my family of five (mum, dad & 3 kids) visited in Freiburg one busy week in August. The other three were either too awful for words or too small, but we really did save the best until last!
Upon arrival, the lovely team showed us a couple of options for our rather large tent, before giving us some details about local supermarkets & Freiburg in general. The first evening we ate in the beer garden. The food was delicious, reasonably priced & the garden had a really friendly atmosphere.
The site itself has a lovely laid back vibe, and even though they strictly enforce the mid-afternoon “quiet time” it’s done very well and with the guests in mind. The bathrooms were spotless, as were the washing-up & laundry facilities. All of which were used by us through-out our stay.
The kids play Park is quite small, but our kids made friends with a group of American kids & had a brilliant time. There is also a reading lounge overlooking the kids play area with some board games. The location of the site is great for getting into Freiburg.
There are public transport links right outside the site, or you can walk a scenic route along the river straight into town. Along this walk there is some stunning street art to admire. There is also a lovely kids play park just across the river, as well as some beautiful cycle & running routes. On sunny day there are parts of the river shallow enough to play in, which our kids loved.
All in all a really lovely site in s great location for Freiburg.
