 We really enjoyed our stay here. the toilet blocks & showers are very clean, although there was no toilet paper in the morning! The kids love the playground there & both the kids & dog loved walking in the woods.
There is a games room in the barn for if it is raining, there is a little shop on site which sells everything you may have forgotton to bring.
There is even plants & hanging baskets on sale at the greenhouse there.
definitely a place to visit again

We visited this site on a busy bank holiday weekend and were pitched in the second field on a slope.The site was very busy and the third field was open with knee high grass and people were pitched on it.It rained for most of the weekend and the site became very sludgey.The toilets had no paper at one point and the showers were cold.There are no rules as to what time to quieten down and the family in the tent beside us stayed up until about 3 am with music on.
On the plus side the childrens playground is nice but we were pitched too far away to let them go play.
Campfires are allowed if you bring your own wood and matlock is a lovely place to visit.
I imagine that if you get an electric hook up pitch,which are a lot closer to the facilities, are going out of the busy season and like the freedom of having no bed time it could be nice although I dont think we would return.

Site was in a beautiful setting, the kids really enjoyed playing in the woods and it felt very safe. Toilets were reasonably clean. The site was very full as it was Bank Holiday but our pitch (with electric hook-up) was great with loads of space & backed onto the woods. Play area was good & we were in a good spot so the kids could just go and play & we didn't have to stand & watch. A few children could have done with being watched more closely as they seemed to cause trouble but that's not the site's fault. Unfortunately because it was full there was always a queue for the showers as 4 doesn't seem to be enough for the whole site. The washing up area even had queues. Plenty of hot water for the showers & washing up. Only had a problem one night when I wanted to wash my face & there wasn't any water at all in the main block! All-in-all it is a basic site but in a beautiful setting & handy for visiting places, we didn't want to come home!

I like this site and so do the kids. The owners are friendly and always there to help. The lady there runs a fantastic little shop selling everything from hot chocolate to 10 penny mix-ups for the kids. The playground is great and caters for all ages. The site is edged by a fantastic birch wood (hence the name) and my son and daughter find endless things to do in here - exploring, building dens or just collecting sticks and leaves. There's even an indoor barn kitted out for table tennis. The showers are fine - always hot water. All in all a great value site offering excellent facilities at fantastically low prices. I've stayed here in August and in April. It was busier in August but by no means packed and I definitely didn't have to wait around for showers or sinks.

This was my first time camping. I thought it was a lovely friendly place. The staff were polite and helpful. The facilities were kept clean. The shop/reception was brilliant everything we wanted they had it in. My daughter loved it as she could roam around and play on the park without me shadowing her. The ground was a little rough where we pitched but that was our fault! I think this site is a little Gem. It could do with a pub on site though.

We have just come back from four nights at this camp site. What a fabulous place. Really clean and although the site was very busy it was not cramped and we never once had to queue for a shower or toilet. The camp shop is really well stocked and very cheap. They have table tennis tables in a barn for bad weather and a play park for the little ones. The site is in the middle of woods and there are some lovely walks around the camp.
The only bad points are the TV reception. We went out and bought a top of the range camping ariel with a huge mast but still no reception. We checked with the other campers and everyone seemed to be having the same problem. We came to the conclusion that it was simply the surrounding environment that blocked the signal.
And finally, don't use an AA autoroute to get there. It sends you in completely the wrong direction and up the side of a mountain that would make any four by four struggle without a caravan.
Anyway, we would not hesitate to visit again, highly recommended.

We stayed here just before the August Bank holiday, when it was extremely busy, with four fields in use. If we had not chosen this site we would have neeeded to have gone home - as all the other smaller sites in the area were full.
It was excellent value at £9 per night for a car, tent and two adults. The site is well appointed, fully landscaped, has a small shop, many electric hook-ups, lots of almost level pitches for tents and specific areas for caravans on levelled ground.
However, there is only one toilet block with three loos per side and four showers total.
The site is in a lovely, sheletered area, surrounded by lots of mature trees. Its about 150 m above the nearby (and VERY damp) river valley. You will not get wet or flooded out on this site for sure.
The local area is extremely attractive, too. Site is handy for Matlock Bath (about 4 miles away). Go early if planning to eat out there, though, as - most restaurants closed at 8.15 - 8.30. We ate at Ellies chop house and the Balti - both were good for a late evening dining experience and excellent value.
This site seemed kid-friendly, with a small jungle-Gym type playground, but no fixed or laid on entertainment, except for a converted barn containing a table tennis area! Kids that will take to this site are those that can make their own entertainmnent.
As its in an area with a distinct shortage of camp sites, this site is a godsend if you are stuck for a place to stop. Its sticks to the old school rules of camping - in that they will never refuse a camper in need of a pitch - but simply open up the next TWO overspill fields. On our weekend - I estimated there were over 250 tents there, plus 20 - 30 caravans.
Be warned though - if you do come at a busy time - its a long, long walk to the toilets from the far overspill field and you will have to queue for one of those four showers. !
Happy Camping - enjoy the site and appreciate the rude old lady in the shop as an example of some local character.

Stayed here with new campers, who have only camped once before in our tent, they were very impressed with the site. I never saw the old lady previous people have mentioned . The staff were very helpful. Clean site, washing up brilliant never had to queue once to wash up. The only problem we had was a group of families camped at the back of us and I had to ask them to turn there music down which was very loud. Think we both will stay there again.

I have many fond memories of this site as I have been visiting since I was “a nipper.” Over that thirty years or so the site has changed, most would say for the better. A childrens park has been built where the kids can do pretty much as they would do at home. Long gone are the days when we were allowed to get up at the crack of dawn and sit on the tractors trailer and go to feed the cows, or even watch a calf being born. Health and safety laws prohibit these things nowadays. Sorry, started to drift down memory lane, I shall get back to the subject. Toilets and showers are modern, clean and plenty of hot water is available (free of charge). The small site shop is well stocked and has convenient opening hours although cigarettes and alcohol are not served. The closest towns for larger shops are Wirksworth and Matlock, around ten and fifteen minutes drive respectively, a pub is within ten mins walk but take a torch if leaving late. Gullivers Kingdom is well worth a visit and reasonably priced at around thirty pounds for a family ticket and Matlock Bath is a must, particularly at illuminations time. This site is ideal for ramblers as the surrounding area is so breathtaking. Black rocks are easily reached by foot, 25 mins to 2hr25mins depending on who directs you, (you could ask me, I know every inch of the area as Ive spent so much time there). I would summarise by saying that this park will appeal to all types of people. Even the most difficult children to entertain are usually struck by the freedom available, try them, you may be suprised. Personally, I go there nowadays just to chill out, drink and eat. Later in my life I lived in Matlock for three years so I guess sightseeing in the area is not my thing!

Scenery fantastic! Site was busy whilst we were there. We camped in the first overspill field which is on quite a slope. Very busy weekend which meant that the four shower cubicles were not enough and we had to queue for twenty minutes. A step in the toilets would also be useful for the little ones as mine struggled to reach the sinks to wash hands and brush teeth. Also, pitches not marked out so we returned to the site one afternoon to find people virtually camping on top of us. All in all, a beautiful area with lots to do. We would return, but not on a busy August weekend when the facilities are stretched to the limit.

A great campsite the whole family loves it we always go when we get the chance. Us 2 adult and our 3 kids. The toilets are clean if you need to use them, there's a little ping pong room and the reception near the farm is a little shop, the kids go in with £1 and come out with enough sweets 2 last for the whole weekend. We've also been before in our tent which was just as good.

Nice informal site. Attractive views. Small children's play area. Woods with paths. Quiet. Showers and toilets are fairly basic but quite adequate for us (2 adults and 2 children under 5). The site has a shop which stocks many of the basics and is open long hours. The site is on a slight slope, but not bad. Some shaded pitches but not many. Some electric pitches too. We hit terrible traffic trying to get into Matlock Bath on the Sunday. Don't know if that was exceptional. Would recommend visiting the nearby Carsington Water reservoir if you've got smaller children (there's a cafe, a good play ground, and the reservoir with all its boating activity).

Just back from a weekend. The staff were very snappy and unhelpful. We booked a flat pitch that was taken when we arrived
We had to go in a field 3 fields away from toilets, it took 20 mins !
Loads of noise all night , with a car parking in middle of field at 5.00am with music blaring
Not too good!
A car journey to nearest pub etc

This was our first camping trip and we really enjoyed it. The campsite is on a slight slope but there is plenty of room. The owners were friendly and the toilets and showers were clean with plenty of hot water. There was a good play area for the kids and loads of space in the field for them to play. We went mid week and although there were plenty other campers there was lots of space.

Just got back from this site. Spent two nights there. The camp was busy but as someone said earlier there was still plenty of space around for the kids to play and some lovely safe walks that allowed me to give the kids more freedom than I usually could ( Kids have special needs).
Toilets were clean as were the showers. There were plenty of taps around the site providing drinking water. There is a shop on site, but it's really small and doesn't stock that much really. There was also drying facilities and a small park for the little ones.
both of the camping fields are sloping, but to be honest where we were it wasn't that bad. All in all we had a really good time. We paid 18 pounds for the two nights for our 8 birth tent which we thought was reasonable. We would definitely use this site again if we were looking for somewhere in the same area.
