This is a super site down the valley from St Gervais Les Bains, facing the perpetually snow covered Domes de Miage mountains. Mont Blanc is just out of sight to the east. The site is quite big with mixed camping and caravan pitches, mostly good-sized, though many with a slight slope. If the weather is wet (and it was very wet indeed during our stay) some pitches become waterlogged and some vehicles struggled to get off them.
Facilities are excellent – the shower block has under-floor heating which was a welcome luxury. Washing up areas are mostly only partially covered, so a bit exposed in bad weather. There is a small launderette with commercial-sized machines. As with most continental sites there is a bit of a problem disposing of waste water – we Brits tend to use larger containers than do the Europeans and the usual solution is to use the chemical toilet disposal point – this can be quite high, so best not allow your tank to get too full. Alternatively the continental WCs can be used for this purpose.
The site owners speak excellent English and are always available to help in reception – Madame is the friendlier of the two. Bread can be ordered, but we were not enchanted with the quality of the baguettes – more Tesco than boulangerie! Owner's comment: We have changed the baker who was delivering the bread in our campsite from this year. Now we (finally) do get REAL 'artisanal' fresh bread every morning in the high season !
Free internet access is available in reception, and there is a free WIFI zone. For reasons unknown we could only access European-based web-sites on WIFI – eg, not BBC.
Obviously the main attraction of the area is the mountains – hiking for the majority and severe climbing for the adventurous. Access to high places from St Gervais is easy on the Mont Blanc Tramway, but you can drive up to Crozat at much less cost and be within 30 minutes hike of the tramway station at Col de Voza. Other mountain excursions can be made from Chamonix, about 30 minutes away.
