What a friendly couple Pat and Terry are. The greeted us like old friends and made us very welcome. There are no frills to the site but it was lovely. The showers are Hot and clean at all times (a change from some of the ones we have stayed at this year). Plenty of hookups, small shop that sold all the essentials plus freshly made sandwiches and jacket potatoes. There was a pub on the corner (about 5 min walk) that we were told was very good but did not try it out - next time will do. It is an ideal site if you want to pop into London. Terry told us that there was only one car park in Loughton that would take the Motorhome (due to height restrictions) so we took a cab to the station (£5) and then the tube into London (20 mins). Ideal - no hassle. Will definitely be staying there again and look forward to meeting Pat and Terry again.
Just got back from a long weekend at the Elms, and was pretty disappointed. First of all, it's a pretty good location. We stayed because it's close to London, and it was really convenient, it's 5 mins drive to Loughton and there you're on the Central Line tube. It's actually in Epping Forest, which looked very nice. However, it's hardly a rural idyll. There was constant noise from a nearby road or motorway, and a lot of noisy motorbikes in the evenings and night, and worst of all, it seemed to be in the flightpath of a major airport, I suppose it must have been City or Luton, but anyway at times there were jets every minute or so, and we also had a rude awakening from the local police helicopter which lives next door. The toilet block and washing up facilities were OK, if a little muddy.
The local pub looked good, and only about 100yds away, with a kids outdoor play area, though we were out too late to give it a try. They have this bizarre gate and a chain which you have to get out of the car to undo: on your own - you have to get out once, undo the gate, get back in, fasten the gate, drive a yard forward, get out again, and undo the chain, drive through, get out again and refasten the chain - is this JUST to annoy people?
Excellent campsite. Small and friendly. We stayed for two nights over Easter. The weather was a bit miserable, but it never seems so bad when the shower block is clean and welcoming! We used the site as a base to visit London which was great as it's only a short drive to the tube station where on a Saturday it's only £1 to park the car all day and £6.30 for an adult all day / all zone tube pass. I would recommend this site to anyone who wants a clean and comfortable base to visit London from.
September 2004 Although the site seemed quiet and Loughton was very accessible by car- the purpose of our two day stay was to visit London by tube- it is reasonable to visit London, and you can buy your travel passes at the station, they cover all the zones and it is only a 20 minute tube ride into London. The tube takes you into the capital from the East so you go through the East End. Brick Lane Market is fantastic on a Sunday and you can have lunch at one of the many curry houses along Brick Lane itself, it is also fascinating to walk through the City of London at weekend when it is so quiet.
The toilet block was OK if you visited in the morning but in wet weather could get quite mucky by the end of the day, better lighting is required outside the toilet block for accessing after dark as it was difficult to see the code entry buttons to enter the keycode, so take a good bright torch. The site owners were very friendly and had loads of advice on the local area.Don't forget to look out for the local cats who are very friendly and will visit you in your tent/caravan, they are very well behaved and house trained so don't worry about 'cats behaving badly!'
The only real downside to our visit was the close proximety of the landing pad for the police helicopter (just prior to turning into the site you will see-behind trees-the Met. Firearms unit headquarters, which is also where the helicopter is based and if you are camping in a tent it is very noisy on take off and landing. After a full day in the capital we just wanted a good nights sleep but we had no chance with the cacophany of the helicopter, when I mentioned the problem to Terry the site owner after the first night his reply was 'we don't really notice it at all as we are used to it', but then again I don't suppose it is as noisy if you are sleeping in a house!
Loughton is a lovely town with lots of different shops and a large sainsburys just next to the station (free parking for shoppers) and after both days in London we visited the Indian takeway just outside the tube station and I can recommend the food, it was delicious.
We will be visiting again, but next time I will be prepared for any problems,i.e: wellies for the showers and ear plugs for nightime
A rural oasis set amongst the urban sprawl of north east London. Superbly situated for making excursions to central London. This probably accounts for the numerous visitors from mainland Europe. So if you want to practice your languages, here is an opportunity.
Quoted as a 2 acre site with 50 pitches, so expect spacing to be close.
A no frills site, set in Epping Forest, so bring your bikes.
So what do I mean by ‘no frills’? No laundry facilities and only one water stand pipe. The washing up facility is a most rudimentary arrangement of a single outside sink with an electric instant hot water unit set into a hedge. The chemical toilet disposal point looks like a plastic dustbin with the bottom cut out and set onto the ground directly over the sewer.
Oh yes, the toilet block. I’m afraid I just cannot agree with the ‘kept spotlessly clean….second to none.’ claim currently appearing on their website. The building is approximately 100-150m from the pitches along the access road to the site and not very modern. Unusually, it is arranged as several shower rooms, each with own shower, sink and w.c. Hot water is provided to each shower and sink by a separate electric heater. The old fabric of the building, the different areas, numerous ceramic items and electrical units inevitably makes efficient cleaning and maintenance virtually impossible.
Take care not to fall foul (like I did) of the Resident Manager’s strict policy on visitors. He wants to charge £3 per person for a Day Pass quoting ‘insurance reasons’. As for the existence of his computerized video number plate recognition system that only permits authorized cars on site.......he must have been having a laugh!
When planning your trips to London, don’t even think of driving. Heavy traffic, expensive parking, and congestion charging will almost certainly put a crimp on your day.
Loughton on the Underground, is the nearest station. The site information says that it is a half hour walk using some forest footpaths. However, I would not fancy my chances of finding my way back in the dark! Also consider Debden, which is one stop down the line where free street parking is possible.
I don’t know why, but the site water made a great cup of tea!
Aug 2003 This is a very quiet site. If you are looking for a bit of R&R this is the place. There are no play facilities which is a shame as that would have made a big difference for us with two children.
The showers do let the place down slightly as they get very grubby througout the course of the day and the shower heads not being adjustable make for quite a difficult time for the vertically challenged (like myself).
The owners are very welcoming and they who are only too happy to share their knowledge about the surrounding area.
If you decide to go, do visit The Owl, the water otter there is well worth a look.
June 2003 The site is situated in the heart of the ancient Epping Forest offering piece and tranquillity but also offering the mayhem of London if you choose it. Although it does state it has 50 pitches, I cannot disagree with this I was just a little concerned about the lack of distance between some of the vans. With this said the site is simply laid out with pitches for units requiring electric hook-ups around the edge with an area at the bottom and the middle for the non-electric units. The site had very little car traffic the weekend we were there, but then the site wasn’t to full capacity. There was plenty of space in the centre for the children and adults alike to play games and generally muck about. Although a little hard to find with lack of signage, we did find this campsite without actually getting lost, and we were welcomed by Terry, the site owner, who cheerfully showed us to our pitch.
Terry and Pat were most welcoming and told us all about the local area and they run a small site shop selling basics and tinned food which is open 8am –10am and 6pm – 8pm. There is a very pleasant walk into Loughton through the forest which take about 30 minutes, unless you take a wrong turning and go wandering around the forest. There is the Owl Pub a short walk away from the site, about 5 minutes in total, that sells good lager and ale and a reasonably priced menu.
The toilet and shower facilities are accessable by key code and are clean and tidy and there are three cubicles that contain a toilet, sink, shower and chair. There is also a separate shower and two separate toilets. The shower I used had plenty of hot enough, running off a power shower, but you couldn’t aim the direction which I must admit is the only downfall of the facilities.
If you fancy travelling into London, then Loughton is just 3 miles away and you can jump onto the tube and into the city in about 30 minutes.
Overall this site offers a great day out in the Capital nearby and is the relaxing site at the end of the day, if you fancy pleasant walks around the forest, then again this is the site for you. If you like quiet sites where your children can play safely and enjoy a family meal in the pub at the end of the day then this campsite is worth considering. They don't allow dogs though and insist you vacate the pitch by 11am (which if you have not, they come knocking and insist you leave, unless you give them an extra £3 per adult to stay longer so you can enjoy what you have already paid for).

July 2003 Almost as near as you can get to London when camping yet so far. Set in ancient Epping Forest, this site is ideal for visitors to the capital or, like ourselves, residents of London who just need a top-up of greenery. Pat and Terry who run the site are extremely helpful and gave us a very warm welcome. The shower/toilet block is spacious and clean. Small shop on site for basics. The popular Owl pub next to the site does food (though we didn't eat there), and has a kid's playground. We will be definitely be back.
