The much heralded toilet block is in a portable building and on arrival on Friday evening, the ladies had only one cubicle with any toilet paper, there was no soap or hand towels. Little thought has been given to disabled access to the campsite. The toilets do not have ramps and strangely, although next to the car-park, one has to walk nearly 100yds through the camp-site to get to them.
One is now required to ferry the camping gear to the pitch using a wheelbarrow. This took 5 journeys over the space of an hour. Just what you need in a rising gale. There are only 2 wheelbarrows provided for a site of over 40 pitches and the total inadequacy of the arrangement was made obvious on a wet Sunday morning when most of the campsite left. People were sobbing with exhaustion and frustration, having to hand-carry their gear. The rationale is apparently to stop people parking on the site but this seems to allow tribes to claim the centre of the site as their own private barbecue space.
Water is provided from a single stand-pipe in the open. Grey water disposal is down a ramshackle industrial plastic sink under the standpipe (or over the fence). There is no electricity to the pitches.
The site itself is in a scenic location, within a working farm. The ground is well-drained chalk soil which bakes to a concrete-like hardness after a day or so of sun. Heavy pounding from a 5-pound sledge was required to get our pegs into the soil. There is a small adventure playground as part of the site, but most children amuse themselves with ball-games around the tents.
There is a cafe on-site serving breakfast and meals throughout the day, but it's not really a camp-site dining facility. The breakfast is reasonably priced and sufficient unto the need. There is a farm-shop next door.
Lewes is nearby, convenient for shopping, and the South Downs Way can be accessed via Kingston village and Swanborough hill.
The site actually not low-priced. The area is not well served with camp-sites, so I suppose it must be what the market can stand, but, in my view, over-priced for the facilities.
Great location in the downs if you want to get away from everything. Good pub within walking distance but not much else so bring what you need as its a bit of a trek to the nearest shops.
Bit pricey considering the rather basic facilities, portaloos were OK for the weekend but the site does have a nice old fashioned camping feel to it.
Breakfasts are highly recommended & a nice touch. We liked it & will be back for another weekend soon.
A beautiful small campsite nestled in the South Downs. We went for two nights to try out our new tents as we live locally. The pitches were large and the policy of only allowing cars on the field for loading / unloading adds to the feeling of space. The adjacent activity centre is brilliant for children and there are views of the animals from the site.
The portable loos are clean and there are five of them. However, when we were there it was very quiet.
The lack of washing facilities is not an issue - it just adds to the 'real' camping feel of the place! The owners are very friendly and helpful and the nearest pub - Juggs Inn - is a twenty minute very pleasant stroll across a field.
My only criticism is that it is a bit pricey if you have a large tent. We have an 8 berth and I had to pay £15 per night on top of the charge per person. When you take into consideration the lack of facilities this does seem a lot of money.
Overall though, a fabulous place although until the proper toilet block is built I wouldn't recommend staying more than two nights! By the way, the farmhouse breakfasts are sumptuous!
This is our second visit to the campsite, this time with our daughter. Its a wonderful small campsite with about 25 or so pitches, with lovely views of the surrounding South Downs, and makes a lovely start to the day with a hot cup of tea, hearing the sheep bleeting on the nearby hillside and the early activity of the nearby farm
The facilities are quite basic a standpipe and porta-loos - which are very clean.
Staying on the campsite gives you half price entry into Spring Barn Farm (just over £10 for 2 adults and a child), which is great for kids and adults too, especially the area in the barn for meeting the animals. Lots of swings, slides and the new addition of bouncy pillows - which is really good as there is one for older children and one for younder children. We were also lucky to stay here while the maize maze was still there.
We had breakfast in the farm kitchen on our last morning. The breakfast is really nice and reasonably priced, and the service is fantastic.
All the staff are very welcoming and friendly, and will help with any problems thatyou have on-site, including campers who have little consideration for others.
The position of the campsite is also great as its in the countryside, but only a short drive (9 miles) to Newhaven and also to Brighton. For an evening out for those who wish to walk there is also a footpath that runs behind the campsite into the village of Kingston, which comes out directly opposite The Juggs pub, which serves fantastic food which is well worth the price, although the drinks are a little pricy. There is also a Tesco and a Waitrose about a 5 minute drive away to top up on needed items.
Overall a very good site indeed and hope to return soon.
We went to Spring Barn Farm as our usual campsite was fully booked as we had left it to the last minute to book for somewhere to stay for the Eastbourne Air Show - I am glad we did! This campsite is lovely, superb location with great views. Just over a mile to the train station. Great Farm Restaurant, lovely breakfast, staff really friendly. The only small point is that there are only 4 port-a-loos at the moment, although I do understand that there will be a toilet block built next year - this will make this a great place to stay and I am sure it will be booked up at all times, the pitches are fairly small, you are very close to your neighbours, but as we were camping with friends this wasn't a problem.
Set in 500 acres of beautiful, rolling Kent countryside. The Oast village on site is the World's largest Oast house collection and makes for a spectacular backdrop. Grass and hardstanding pitches for caravans, tents and motorhomes with electric option. Modern toilets and showers and multiple washing up facilities.
Small shop onsite and pub/restaurant at the entrance. The River Medway flows through the site, providing idyllic waterside pitches. Make the most of the location and try your hand at canoeing or fishing or simply sit back, unwind and enjoy wildlife spotting. Five minutes' drive from Paddock Wood station and trains to London Find out more here
This was our first visit to this campsite, we stayed for two nights.
The staff were very polite and helpful, nothing was never too much trouble.
Although the pitches were on the small side, the facilities were perfect. Being quite a small campsite, made it very friendly, we made lots of friends, and will definitely return.
There were several portable toilets, which were very clean. And a standpipe for water. It served us well for our 2 nights.
It really was back to basics, and we loved it that way.
The surrounding views were outstanding.
The farm park located next door was excellent, lots for the children to do, my son loved it.
The Maize maze was brilliant fun!.
I really believe you will not be disappointed with your visit.
Only stayed here for one night to try out the new tent but had a really nice weekend and would like to have stayed for longer. Had fantastic weather and got a little bit too sunburnt!
Fantastic small little campsite, with really lovely views all around and well maintained pitches. The facilities are very simple, a few portaloos (which were incredibly clean and included toilet paper), and access to water. You can hire a fire pit at this campsite as well, which would have been useful, but as we were only staying for one night didn't feel we would need it. Barbeques are allowed as well, and there are a few bricks by the sink area to put your barbie on so you don't burn the grass.Although we didn't actually discover this until the morning after, with the previous evening being spent constructing something to put the bbq on!
The staff at the campsite were really friendly and really helpful. We treated ourselves to breakfast from the farm house which was really lovely, and reasonably priced. Staying at the campsite also gives you reduced entry fee into the farm.
The only downside to weekend however was a select few of the other campers who were quite selfish and disrespectful to the fact they weren't the only people on the campsite.Arguing at 4am!
We stayed at this campsite for one night while walking the South Downs Way.
All in all it's a very nice campsite in a good location. It was relatively quiet and the views out onto the Downs are very pretty. The facilities at the moment are relatively basic with only 2 portaloos (although both are extremely clean) and no shower block (they are apparently building one for summer 2010). This lack of shower block means it would be difficult to stay for more than one night at the moment.
The adjoining farm park serves fantastic home cooked breakfasts which is just what you need before a day of walking.
Overall a good site in a good location, which will be almost perfect once a shower block has been added.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the the farm setting is lovely (campers can get a discount on farm access - ideal for children).
The cafe and small gift shop are well presented. The food was very good.
The camping facilities were very simple - only a pair of very clean portable toilets and a standpipe for water - these were fine for our overnight stay.
Lack of washing facilities is a great shame and limits length of stay on this otherwise nice site.
