We stayed at this site for two nights, arriving on the Friday evening. The site office was manned despite us arriving at 7pm.
The site has two fields, both are ok, slightly sloped but we managed to find a flat part. We stayed in the second field which unfortunately is very close to the A21 so was quite noisy all night. In addition in the main field was a group of 12-15 people who were playing music until 2. 30am.
The toilet facilities were awful. Basically they have two metal boxes (similar to shipping containers); there is 1 shower for the men and 1 shower for the women. Both showers were filthy and often covered in bodily hair. In the gents toilets the urinals were overflowing which meant the floor was covered in urine and water, the toilet bowls were stained, there was rarely any toilet paper/hand towels available and only cold taps were installed.
The ladies toilets were slightly better I am told although the lack of toilet roll was an issue in those also. The ladies toilet also had the luxury of a hot tap! Strangely the ladies toilet only had 3 cubicles whereas the men’s had 5! As a result there were queues for the ladies.
For washing up, there are two deep sinks located in-between the two toilets, water (cold) comes from a hosepipe. A length of PVC pipe is used to block up the plug hole although we didn't bother and instead boiled a kettle and did it in a washing up bowl next to our tent.
Overall the site is fine apart from the proximity to the A21. I appreciate that camping is supposed to be basic but for the price we paid we would have expected more.
In the end none of us were brave enough to use the showers.
The good part was that camp fires are permitted.
Would return if they installed decent toilet facilities.
We have just come back from Buckhurst and we had a lovely time, its close to Seldescombe which is a lovely vollage with a good pub. The site supervisor was friendly and they sold logs.
The campsite was surprisingly quiet when we arrive and it didn't get that full over the weekend which was a good thing as there's only two separate showers for both men & women and these were ok. If they build a new block this campsite would be really good.
On the saturday night there was some noise from a group of teenagers but it stopped by 11pm and the A21 can be noisy. It would be good to see the owner patrol a bit more.
The site office is a not a shop where you can buy essentials or local farm produce but Hastings is down the road and access to supermarkets, shops & garages is good.
We went for walk on Saturday and would recommend walking towards Battle and the village of Seldescombe is nice.
If you just want to get away for the weekend and sit around a fire then this is a good site but the toilets & showers could do with attention and may put off some people. If it gets busy then the shower thing could turn into a Great British queue.
This was our first camping trip of 2011 and we made a very good choice with this campsite. Ideally located just outside of Hastings. Plenty to do in the surrounding area and supermarkets galore for those essentials!
Arriving at the campsite you drive into a completely open, rectangular field surrounded by trees. In the bottom left corner of the field is the site office and the toilet block. You just turn up pay your money and then pitch your tent where ever you so choose – near a fire pit. There are two fields to choose from one has the toilet block in it and the other doesn't – it depends on your circumstances – with a 5 year old with a fascination of toilets we chose the field with the toilet block in.
The toilet block and facilities are more than adequate for what you are there for - camping. The washing up sink is basic but it does exactly what you need. As previous reviews have commented the toilets blocks are cleaned at least twice. I believe on some occasions we did see them being mopped out at least 4 times. They were clean and well stocked, the only thing that made them dirty on our visit was certain campers with a complete lack of sense and consideration.
For putting the tent up, there is certainly ample space to make your own area for your stay. The ground is soft to put the pegs in and soft enough under the ground sheet – what more do you want when camping.
Fire logs are available for £4 a bag from the site office and this is a reason why we choose campsites such as this, because you can have an open fire. Logs will last for at least a night and then the morning after if that's how you want it.
Can't really think of any negatives for the facilities on this campsite – if you are looking to get away, go back to basics and enjoy camping it's fantastic.
The only thing I would have as a recommendation would be to have some one to check on the campsite of the evening to check there are no problems – such as nuisance campers, with a lack of common sense and consideration for others also using the site.
We visited this site during May bank holiday 2011.
It was very basic for the price. It is basically 2 fields with 1 sink for washing up, 2 toilets in the ladies block with 1 shower and for the mens they got 4 urinals, 4 toilets and 1 shower. The shower / toilet blocks are very and basic even though we did see the staff clean them out twice a day. The shower has no pressure what so ever.
The staff were helpful and friendly. The site is very close to Hastings and they do allow camp fires which was lovely. They also sell sacks of logs for £4.
We paid £56 for 2 night for 3 adults and 2 children.
I think if they upgraded or refurbished the toilets and showers and had a couple more sinks with hot water for washing up it would be a lot better.
There is nothing in the immediate area but a 5 min drive up the road and you have a petrol station, supermarket, restaurant and a further 5 mins on and you are in the seaside town of Hastings where there is a lot to do (amusements, beach, sealife centre, smugglers caves, cliff walks, cinema, shopping, bowling, restaurants, pubs, etc etc)
I probably would go back to this site just due to its location and I liked the atmosphere of the place.
I needed to get my kids away from computer games and electric for a few days, I was lucky to pick the perfect place. It was basic and that is just what I wanted.
Great idea selling the logs £4 a container. We spent each evening around the log fire.
Close to Hastings so we popped to the sea front for a nice fry up.
Bad points- Nil ( well it was raining whilst I was trying to put up our 8 man tent for the first time, but we cant really blame the campsite for the rain now can we.) plus that just started the fun.
Also we took the dogs. Plenty of walking for them.
Just 15 minutes from Ashford and 25 minutes from fabulous beaches, you'll be ideally placed for exploring the Garden of England. The park is divided into a family area, that is close to the play parks, the sports field and the games room, and a peaceful adult-only area in The Meadows, that is ideal for couples. A range of grass and hardstanding pitches, fully serviced or non electric, catering for all sized of tents and caravans.
On both areas you will enjoy five-star, centrally-heated showers, and private cubicles with toilet, hand basin, dryers etc. Laundry and campers kitchens, a large childrens playground, sports field, games room and television lounge. The park has CCTV and WiFi is available for a small fee. A dog walking area is provided on site. Find out more here
There was a large group of us and we were able to pitch together and have an open fire. Unfortunately those were the only two benefits we found on this site.
The cost was very expensive for a family as you pay per tent, per child, and per car a night! Wood available to purchase at £4.00 a crate. Therefore for a family of 5 and a car you pay £26 a night for a field.
There were a lot of people on site and sadly the facilities were inadequate, particularly considering the price we paid. The facilities are still as previously described, with no sign of a new toilet/shower block or a children's play area. The only hot water supply was in the ladies toilets with only a cold hose above the two very deep washing up sinks. The shower in the ladies did not work well and went cold or stopped when anyone flushed the toilet. Most people were therefore trying to use just the one men's shower for the whole site, and there was often a queue for the two ladies toilets in the mornings as well. Only on one occasion throughout the whole weekend was there hand towels in the dispenser in the ladies toilets.
From the site we drove to Hastings and Bexhill but there was nothing within short walking distance, only a pub over a mile away and via a few steep hills.
This site does have potential but unless the owners improve the facilities then we won't be camping there again. We do not mind basic camping, but if you pay £26 per night you should have hot water, and toilet paper available at 8.30 in the morning.
I understand the women running the site were very friendly, but better value is required.
We had a very enjoyable weekend at Buckhurst campsite. When we visited it had only been going for 5 months but it has great potential and I’m sure when people get to know about it, it will get really busy. It’s basically two large fields, some of it sloping but you can find plenty of flat sites. You can choose your own pitch which is great and you can also make your fire anywhere. The one downside is that you are not allowed to bring your own logs and can only purchase them from the site at £4 for a small crate which was about 10-12 logs. We didn’t think this was particularly good value as we don’t bring any gas and do all our cooking on the fire so this could prove very expensive.
Whilst the toilet and shower facilities were basic, they were very clean and provided all we needed and the loo rolls were kept topped up. There were also basic washing up facilities, although the sinks were very deep and therefore difficult to use.
The owners were very friendly and helpful and have plans to invest in the site so I imagine it can only get better!
Overall, we had a great time and if they lift the ban on bringing your own logs, we would definitely return!
Buckhurst campsite is simply two large open fields with very little shelter - hence we had two large gazebos for shade/shelter.
This is the second time I have stayed there, the first time I was aware of the traffic noise from the A21 but this time I think the wind had shifted to eliminate that annoyance.
The facilities are basic - two steel cargo boxes fitted with 3 urinals and five toilets + 1 shower for the gents, 3 toilets + 1 shower for the ladies - not new but cleaned well. There was a problem with the ladies shower being powerless for a day or so but it was soon seen to.
Donna, who runs the joint, is onsite most of the time in a caravan within easy reach - this is a good thing as she has electrical sockets available to charge things like mobile phones.
She is very helpful and courteous.
Fires are allowed and logs are sold by a couple of young lads on a quad bike pulling a trailer for £4 per crate - not a bad rate considering the current price of fuels.
As for any other facilities, well there are none, although to be fair Donna did say that she is going to be building a new shower/toilet block and install a kiddies play area - we look forward to that.
There is a huge Sainsbury's about 2 miles south on the A21 which is about 3 miles outside Hastings with all it's trimmings. Local pubs are around but transport will be needed as they are all accessed via the busy A21 which has no footways for pedestrians.
All in all, we had a good time and will no doubt return again to Buckhurst campsite.
We stayed at this site for one night to get away from the hustle and bustle and then take a trip along the coast to see the Eastbourne Airshow.
The owners were very friendly and helpful. The ground is not really even, but if you use good sense then you can be very comfortable. There are no marked pitches, just set up where you like; this also goes for where you set up your campfire, it was so nice to have this freedom.
The facilities are basic (like porta-loos), but they have indeed fitted a men's shower now. The facilities only have cold water with the exception of the showers, but they are kept very clean. The toilet roll ran out by the evening, but I assume all good campers take a few spares just in case.
The owners do supply logs at a small cost and it is really enjoyable to have a campfire with a bowl of hot soup in the evenings.
Since the site is located just off of the A21 you can hear the traffic, but you will have no difficulty in finding the location as it is well sign-posted.
We didn't use the surrounding area as we went to the Airshow, but it is within a very easy and short drive to Hastings.
Set in rolling hill country, the site is well placed for visits to local attractions and beaches.
The facilities are basic, but adequate and we were told that further improvement was planned for later in the year.
Staff were polite.
The long sloping field provided lots of pitches alongside the hedges, leaving a large area in the centre of the field that allowed children to play cricket, frisbee, etc. Other than this open area there were no facilities for children.
£25 for a family sized tent for one night and the (poor burning) logs were poor value at £4 per small basket, particularly when there seemed to be an embargo on campers bringing their own logs.
