We booked on a whim on Saturday morning and turned up in the evening. The site itself being a very large field surrounded by trees was great for finding sheltered spots.
There were other campers there but there was so much space we did not really have 'neighbours' as such. That was how we wanted it. I would definitely come back here again. The farmer was friendly and helpful too.
It's a great location as Wiston itself is a lovely village with a fab tea room. Also near by are Steyning, Shoreham, Worthing, Lancing and of course Brighton is not really that far away.
There seems to be an abundance of public footpaths, various attractions. And so close to the coast. What more could one want.
On the downside - chemical toilets. I think that in this very minimal low impact site a few sets of compost toilets would be better. The facilities were basic (3 toilets and 1 sink), no showers.
I think that its a good thing to have only a few toilets as it happens but the prices charged are more like what you would possibly expect to find in a campsite with various facilities.
However, I guess the price is the location and the space. The fire wood was a little expensive for the amount given as well and also much out of the control of the farmer, we happened to be camping a few miles away from a very loud 'free party' (we think) on the saturday night and the music went on at around 10.30pm and finished at around 6am.
One of the 'perils of living in the country' as the farmer himself said. I am sure this would not happen every weekend though. Infact, this could only happen to us so don't let it put you off!
What a wonderful place, we arrived here just short of three and followed the signs from the farm to the campsite where we found the farmer. This was an amazingly big field and we were able to pitch anywhere. The farmer showed us a good spot to pitch our tent which was not to far from the toilets and sink area (cold water only) with a nice big fire pit area. As it was a bank holiday there were at least 30 other tents on site but as you could pitch where you wanted this wasn't a problem and you still get lots of space between tents.
The farmer came around the site often to sell wood for the fire and to makesure everyone was ok and gave us a map to the local areas of which we followed to the red lion pub which is beautiful and a must. It serves the most amazing food and welcomes both children and dogs outside and inside.
The site as you may have read doesn't have hot water so washing is difficult, although there is a cold water shower for the brave. We went with out five sons aged 13,11,8,5 and 3. They all really loved it here with plenty of places to explore and plenty of friends made. All the children were sad to come home at the end of the bank holiday weekend. This place is a must and we would definitely be returning again
We are a group of families with kids and we like to camp in fields that allow camp fires. This camp site was perfect for this. Its spacious and in a very nice spot with easy access to London and the coast.
It does however have down sides;
The toilets are plastic portaloos that were not adequately serviced. There is no hot water. There is nowhere to leave rubbish.
These things are important at any time but when you are made to book for 3 nights over a bank holiday weekend and it costs you £105 for a family of 5 I expect a bit more than just a field and a smelly chemical loo that needs cleaning and has no soap or loo roll.
We did complain to the chap who runs the site and as a gesture he deducted £10 from the bill. But this was from the total bill for the group which came to £575. Not the biggest discount ever made.
It is a shame that he won't or hasn't spent a few quid improving the site's facilities. Compost loos might be the answer. Certainly some ability to recycle and leave rubbish at the site would be helpful and very cheap for him to offer.
All in all a nice site with plenty of room but limited facilities.
We were thrilled to find this site. The stunning location and permitting of campfires were the highlights for our family. The facilities are very basic - flushing portaloos and a tap but that suits us fine.
It was very quiet but even when busy the pitches look far enough apart to ensure plenty of space. There's a lovely walk through woods and fields to the Red Lion Pub in Ashington for decent food (with small kids it was a good 45 - 60 minute walk, the map was deceptive!)
The downsides - bit pricey: 2 adults and 2 kids £30 a night. But my biggest gripe is the two night min weekend booking / 3 nights at bank hols. As it was quiet Easter weekend we were able to camp and pay for just one night however.
We stayed at this campsite for one night at the end of the summer holidays. We were two mums, with three 11 year old boys and two 13 year old girls. We had 2 tents but space was not a problem on this site! The pitches are huge. The kids all had a great time exploring the woods and trying out the outdoor shower. We got through 2 bags of logs and had a huge campfire in which we baked potatoes and roasted marshmallows and around which we played, talked and sang well into the night. We had a clear night and as there is no light pollution, the stars were amazing. This place is about 3 or 4 fields away from the road, so the views are wonderful and there is not a lot of noise. The campsite owner was helpful and came back in the evening to check we were ok. There were two other groups on the field, but too far away for us to hear. The ground was bumpy and the grass was a bit stumpy - (glad we brought our folding chairs), but we didn't really mind this for a one night stay. It seems that there is a choice with camping, either posh washing facilities with manicured green, shop and playground or very basic with campfires allowed. This was definitely the latter as the toilets were portacabins (you need a torch at night) with one outside sink/cold water tap and an outdoor shower (no privacy except for the trees). This was great fun for one or two nights, but I need the posh washing facilities for longer stays! We would stay here again though as it's near to where we live (our husbands came for breakfast in the morning) and is one of two campsites in the vicinity to allow campfires. Great find.
Of the 4 portaloos on site 2 were locked. The other two were clean and well stocked with loo roll. Washing up was in an outdoor sink with only cold water.
We did find the showers but as we did not stay long enough, we did not sample them.
The site owner (john) popped round mid evening for a quick chat and to clean to toilets. A very friendly guy.
The field was on a slight slope and was very bumpy in places.
But all this is not a problem as you sit round the camp fire with a pack of marshmallows.
Overall I was impressed by this site. Very peaceful. There were at least 3 other tents on the field but they were far enough away we could not hear any noise from them.
My husband and I stayed for two nights in July. We were delighted with the beautiful scenery and the feeling of space (our 'neighbours' were many yards away) Though not being far from the coast and some major towns, our experience was one of being in the middle of the countryside. Sitting round the bonfire in the evening was idyllic, and the weather helped, being warm day and night, with a bit of breeze by day to cool us.
We went wandering beyond the campsite, on mostly well signposted footpaths, and found more than enough to see to satisfy a lazy two days. There is a well stocked supermarket, chemist, chip shop and pub (with food) a half an hour's walk away. (Ashington)
To mention the disadvantages, we sometimes noticed traffic noise from the A24, and sometimes noticed aeroplanes overhead. There was no hot shower, which was fine for two days, as we came prepared, but would be a disadvantage for longer. The grass was long and with many varieties of plants. It was not possible to walk around barefoot, but the result was a great variety of insect life, which for me was an advantage.
The long track to the site was a little uneven. This was not a problem for the car, but I would be rather wary of riding down it by motorbike, our sometimes preferred transport. There was a bike on the site however, so a braver rider than me had clearly made it.
If you can't deal with chemical toilets, don't come here, but if you want to enjoy amazing scenery, a rich variety of wildlife, and just want to 'stop and smell the flowers', then this is the site for you. We will definitely be going back.
We have just returned from a 3 night visit to this campsite.
The site is found down a winding road and this had been well kept I think that it would still be good if it was wet although we were blessed with fantastic weather.
We were told by the owner that it was a really busy weekend but we were very happy with the amount of space that was given to us and didn't feel crowded. The nearest tent was at least 200yds away and most of these went home on sunday and we were left with only 3 other tents on site and we were so far apart I didn't know they were there. We bought 2 bags of logs for £10 on our arrival which lasted the whole weekend although you can bring your own if you wanted.
No electric - no loud music.
A basic site with toilets a sink for washing up and a standpipe for taking a shower. These were cleaned every day
We enjoy walking and the south downs were 5 min drive although we had plenty of walks directly off the site. You are provided with a map which shows a couple of walks but we found far more while we were walking to the local pub. About a 15 min walk away the Red Lion is fairly easy to find unfortunately it doesn't have very much of a garden although it does have tables and chairs outside. The food is good.
We took 3 dogs with us and it is a perfect site for familys although if you are looking for entertainment this is not the site for you. A fab place for peace, listening to birds, cows and sheep in the distance.
Just around the corner is the local post office and tea rooms. The food here is terrific and the cream tea is a must have.
We camped here for 2 nights in June 2010 with 5 dads and 9 children in very hot weather. The site is very basic with a tap, some portaloos and a single sink for washing up. It's a back to basics site which allows camp fires and is a good distance from the nearest road, access to woodlands and plenty of space - just what we were looking for.
The number of units was restricted to a low number allowing plenty of space for each group. The owner visited a couple of times, seemed very pleasant and relaxed and came across as very friendly.
Access is via a long and bumpy track but was not a problem in dry weather. There are shops in nearby towns and the coast is close enough for a morning on the beach. There are tearooms and pubs close by too.
If you want hookups, extra facilities etc this is not for you but if you want camp fires, space and basic facilities, this could be just right - we will probably return. We paid £10 per adult per night and £5 per child per night with no extra costs. They will sell you wood for the fire. Camp fires make the experience - we don't camp anywhere that doesn't allow them!
