We arrived completely soaked after a heavy shower caught us on the road. We were very happy to find this place dedicated to campers and vans.
On your arrival your first sight is the complete skeleton of a sea animal pinned on a wall.
Facilities looked a bit knocked-up but they were not : very functional. Large shower plus tap in the same room. Chair to put your stuff on. A shed to cook.
The whole place is simple but very well kept. Grass is comfy and thick.
The owner is a real character. A bit grumpy at first sight but in fact very interesting and willing to help you discover the surroundings. He owns a lot of books about the Ardnamurchan peninsula which is a true beauty.
A honesty box is there if Trevor (the owner) is out. Camping cost us £15 per day for the two of us and our tent. Worth the price if you consider the charm of the place and the remote situation of it.
You can pitch your tent near the sea or up on the grassy terraces. Stunning views on Mull with wonderful lights and changing skies. Lots of seabirds. Seals.
A very nice place where people seam to come back. We had a few friendly chats and drinks with other campers.
We stayed two nights which allowed us to cycle to Ardnamurchan point : the visit of the lighthouse and the exhibition is a must and worth the trip (on a true roller coaster road). Nice tea shop up there with tasty home-made cakes.
The village shop sells petrol (amongst a surprising lot of things), is open every day, even sunday morning. The Kilchoan hotel nearby offers good ale, nice dinner in the restaurant and at the bar.
This camping site is definitely a place where I'll return.
Well worth the journey to this beautiful spot. We camped our Campervan on a grass pitch below the hard-standing as we didn't need a hook up and were fine with the sloping drive - drive in one way and out the other seemed to be the trick.
Friendly welcome from the owner, with an interesting selection of books & local information available in the study centre, and all very informal. We arrived from Mull, so didn't notice the long drive, but if you're going to be the most westerly campers, you have to get there somehow - it's part of the fun! Ideal washing up area - sink, draining board, table & plenty of hot water. Loos & showers spotlessly clean with regular checks throughout the day - they may not be modern, but it is more than made up for by the care to keep them tidy (soap & cotton towels for the hand basins, thank you Trevor). And the showers have the most incredible water pressure that I have ever experienced, and piping hot too! This is a stunning part of the country - we cycled to the lighthouse at Ardnamurchan - fantastic views all along the road & when you get to the lighthouse, plus visitors centre with delicious cakes & gifts, exhibition in lighthouse for a small fee. Yes there are midges, but stick to the Skin So Soft - it works for me, with other campers adding candles & nets, nothing unbearable. Kilchoan Hotel did good fish & chips on the Friday night - 10 minute cycle. Local shop is one of those 'Scottish Wonders' - the local shop that sells EVERYTHING! Food, gifts, hardware - I think I counted 10 types of honey!
Walk down to the bottom of the campsite to the waters edge, pebbly beach, beautiful clear water. Child friendly? Water, lighthouses, volcanoes - I think so! We will return, it's well worth the journey.
This is my (to date) favourite place in Scotland. We have camped 2011 and taken a campervan June '13
I love the long picturesque drive but it is not for the impatient driver. You come across deer on the road who make you feel like you are in their private place, you might find sheep and their lambs lying on the tarmac en route.
The site is simple, 2 toilets and 2 showers, the scenery is breathtaking. Facilities are basic but clean. Trevor is helpful. ~Trevor can tell you about the area. We saw seals at night and I know they have had a whale this year nearby. You can fish from the rocky water coast we walk along the rocky coastline and fish in the evening.
You come here for the scenery or the amazing Sanna beach. Sanna beach has white sands and clear sea. Wildlife in abundance. Tobermory is a short ferry ride. I love the fact you can have a campfire (using a stone or slab lying around to protect the grass) simple camping but a great experience for our family.
Due to its simplicity we never had cause to ask for help. There is a small shop and petrol station closeby. We chose to support the local shop/petrol station. We love this place because of it's peacefulness and beauty.
The site is small, but out in the peace and quiet of the countryside, so is unlikely to ever be full.
It's on a slope reaching down to the bay, but has terraced areas for motorhomes. It's a steep slope into the site if you have a larger motorhome.
The view is stunning. You have a widescreen display of the bay, looking back along the mainland, and across to Mull. Watch the small ferry ply back and forward from Tobermory to Kilchoan (about 4 miles away), and the larger ferry from Oban head out to Coll and Tiree.
The owner is a character, and a lot of the stuff on site is there to encourage you to look at the local wildlife. Down near the beach, we saw a seal come up onto the rocks.
The facilities are a mish-mash, this is no corporate setup, but they're useable.
But it's the location and view that make this site a bit special.
If you're this far west (most westerly campsite on the mainland), it's worth the effort to make it to Ardnamurchan Point where the lighthouse stands at the most westerly point on the mainland.
Great site but takes a while to get here. Travelled down from Lochailort and although only 40 miles takes a good 90 minutes even with very little traffic.
Drive down into the site quite steep but no problems when we were there as it was dry, hot and sunny.
Room for 4 motorhomes with hook ups, the rest of the site being for tents. The site is sloping and the motorhomes are on a flat terrace overlooking Mull and the Loch.
Tents are scattered about on any flat ground. Friendly site and facilities are adequate rather than palatial.
Site owner very friendly and sociable and tends to be around in the mornings and evenings although he doesn't live on the site.
Although we wouldn't have liked to bring a large motorhome in here a couple did arrive on our third night.
A stunningly beautiful location in a remote part of the world. Weather was not great when we visited but we still felt it was a special place. You can walk along the shore and maybe spot an otter if you are lucky, there are fossils in the limestone cliffs a few minutes walk away. We didn't see an otter right by the campsite but did see one a few minutes down the road by the ferry stop for Mull. There were bluebells around the edge of the campsite in May. A skeleton of a whale washed up nearby is on the wall of the bothy/study centre. Great views out to the islands and you can see lots of lighthouses twinkling.
Facilities are not bad, showers and toilets are ok, there is also a washing up room with washing machine and fridge. You pay to use the washing machine but showers are free.
The village shop is about 10 mins walk and is very well stocked with most of the supplies you will need - good range of food plus books, souvenirs etc. The village pub is about 5-10 mins walk beyond that and is quite good with local ales and reasonable food. I think you can also camp in its grounds if this campsite is full, which seems unlikely.
Can't remember how much we paid but it was less than the previous place and seemed reasonable.
Absolutely loved this place. A location to die for and facilities which, while not necessarily state-of-the-art, were adequate and honest. The owner has built the site up himself and runs it with an attentive presence. The power went down on the morning we were there and Trevor had it fixed and up and running within 2-3 hours despite it being Easter Sunday. Hats off to the man.
A nice mixture of tents and camper vans and well worth the trek along the peninsula to sample this very special place.
Fantastic small campsite in a stunning location, nice and quiet. It is a long road round but well worth it.
There is a study centre but didn't go in, think it gives info on the area, fossils, wild life etc. We didn't get time to do it.
The facilities are basic but that's what we expected, the toilet block only had 2 toilets and 2 showers but was clean and had lots of hot water.
There is a shop within 15-20 min walk but has limited opening hours so make sure you take provisions with you.
Hotel/bar is about 25-30 min walk and serves food till 8pm, it can get busy.
You can set a fire on the pebbly beach but take some fire wood with you as there isn't much around.
Midges - Were really bad on the Saturday night so we went down to the beach and lit a fire. Fine all othertimes, but that's expected when in the west of scotland. Cover up, take a midge net, skin so soft, citronella candles.
You can walk to the Kilchoan Peir and get the ferry across to Tobermory in 35 mins. Nice day out - good if you need to go to the Co-op or want a nice meal, closer than heading to Mallaig / Fort William. Visit the tea room on the way to the peir.
The lighthouse is 5 miles away and Sanna Sands just a bit further. Worth the trip on a nice day.
Wish we could have stayed longer.
If you like a quiet campsite, few children, stunning scenery and somewhere to relax then go here.
