Stayed two nights here - on a very large pitch on the first terrace overlooking the little lake. Good site for children, but not so good (I would have thought) for teenagers. Quite a winding road from the nearest town, so quite rural. No bars, etc., within walking distance. Made very welcome on arrival, and all staff friendly and helpful.
Clean toilet blocks, not too busy, good hot showers. Didn't try the restaurant, as felt the menu was too 'British' for us (pizza, hamburger, sausages, and steaks) - although there were lots of people in there, so if this is what you like to eat it was obviously good. Theme nights and barbecues advertised outside the restaurant - but we didn't try them. Found pool too 'chlorinated' with a very strong smell - made my eyes run, and others commented on the same problem.
I agree with what's been said about the entrance - I'm not sure we didn't scrape the side of our van there, as we found damage when we got home. It really is tight so beware.
The town of Joinville is being 'done up' - streets pedestrianised, shop-fronts tidied up, and once done it will probably be lovely - but when we were there most of it was like a shabby building site (this was in 2006 so may have been finished by now - the French do tend to get things done quickly)! We went over to the Lac de der Chantecoq for the bird-watching, and found some lovely villages, with wooden framed houses, and to the 'Willow Museum' nearby, which is 'interesting'.
One night in July A typical Les Castels site with everything you would expect. I have to own up - I don't like Les Castels sites, and I only ever use them for overnights. Of course this means we end up furthest away from the facilities. This site needs plenty of care when you enter - the gates are quite narrow and reception is close by so you may well find you get stuck half-in half-out. The site is terraced but well serviced with good roads and huge pitches (this I acknowledge is not always the Les Castels way; they are usually much more likely to have UK sized pitches. Maybe I'm too critical of Les Castels! To me they are like going to a Travelodge - convenient, clean, not expensive, all over the place, but largely lacking in character. Sorry for being a grouch; - the site was very busy, and we ate a pleasant meal in the lakeside restaurant (served by two Scots lasses which pleased this Lowlander - especially as they were twins and had me befuddled at first as I thought it was just one very fast waitress!). My four-year old enjoyed the small play areas. We never made it to the pool. But then again our next stop was 8 nights in Disneyland. Hey Ho
Stayed here for 10 days for our main summer hols. Had a brilliant time, despite the weather and the sloping pitch. The site is really well laid out and all pitches where a good size, our two kids enjoyed the entertainment, they did face painting, went on nature trails, tried archery. All provided by the people who own the site. There was even a campfire one evening. The pool complex was lovely, clean and warm, there was a decked sunbathing area, but unfortunately no chance to try it. The kids play area was well equipped, as was the shop, you need to order your bread and croissants etc the day before, but all other necessities are on site. Just down the road is Grande a Roman village, which has the most spectacular amphitheatre I have ever seen, the whole complex is really well done and our kids loved just exploring all the little rooms that are still standing. The cost was really low less than 10 euros for the adults and kids half that, and that also got you into the most amazing mosaic floor you will see anywhere. Nigloland is an Alton Towers type place, there are lots of rides for different age groups, they are very strict on the height of the child which indicates if they can go on the ride or not, but there is definitely something for everyone. We went on a miserable wet day, but had a fantastic time as the French were back at school and we had not queue's, it's definitely worth a visit, food is a bit expensive like most of these places, may be worth taking sandwiches etc. Definitely a site worth visiting and an area to explore.
We only called in for an overnight stop, but certainly felt that this site deserved a longer stay. In fact, because of the last few miles from the main road at Joinville and the very challenging entrance to the site itself, I am not sure I would actually recommend it as an overnight stop at all.
The reception was very helpful, the pitches, although mostly on terraces, were not difficult to get on to, and all the facilities were very attractive and well-maintained. A meal on the terrace overlooking the lake, while being serenaded by the frogs, was an enjoyable experience (the food was OK).
Definitely a site will will think of going back to.
