We spent a long weekend on this site. It was quite crowded when we go there, but managed to get a nice wee plot near the fence which wasn't too bad, even though it was next to the road into the site. Over the weekend the site was very very noisy, with loud music and singing until about 3am and there didn't seem to be anyone patrolling to keep the noise down. Fortunately, they all went home on the sunday night and we had a peaceful time for our remaining days.
We had our 2 dogs with us and had been told they had to be kept under control, which I would expect, but there were dogs running all over the site and again there didn't seem to be anyone telling folk to do otherwise.
On the positive side, the facilities were clean and nearby, the scenery and walks beautiful.
Having previously stayed in Tollymore we were keen to see how Castlewellan compared. One tip for arrival make sure you know your booking reference as it will speed things up. We arrived around 5pm and a lot of the pitches were taken so there wasn't much choice however we were very pleased with the one we picked. There was plenty of space and were well laid out. The toilet blocks were fine par for the course in Forest Parks, plenty of hot water. Castlewellan Park is lovely with a large lake with nice walks. Also there is a Peace Maze and although not very well kept the children enjoyed it. All in all I would recommend this site and will certainly return again.
Fantastic location, set next to forest and lovely lake. Campsite is well set out with more than adequate showers and toilets which were always clean.
Area is lovely, lots of walks, kids loved taking their bikes out and the peace maze is good fun as well. The village is only 5 mins walk so ideal for picking up supplies and walking to pub !
We will definitely go back as it was so relaxing and to top it off we had fab weather !
The site is set in a beautiful area with lots to do. Unfortunately, when we were there, the site was crowded - in some areas, it appeared that the owners were trying to cram as many units on to the minimum space. The toilet block was no more than OK, there was one washing machine to serve the whole site (fortunately, there is a launderette just near the exit) and there is lot of litter lying about - and I even came across dog dirt which hadn't been cleaned up.
The site was noisy at night - the person next to us was asked to leave after two nights of raucous singing until well after midnight.
This site is a real gem. We arrived on a Thursday night and took one of the many hardstanding pitches and hookup which worked out to be £10.50 Mon-Thurs. The day after the site was really busy so we camped on the field for £13 with no hookup. The facilities are good with extra toilets and shower being made available during busy periods. But was makes the site is it's forest park location. It has a castle, woodland walks, a lake with a cycle trail around it as well as a maze with stunning views of the Mourne Mountains. Whilst the town of Castlewellan is a mere 5 minutes stroll away down the tree lined park drive. There is so much open space and freedom at this site for kids and adults alike to enjoy. Like I said a real gem and close to the seaside town of Newcastle too.
Easter 2004 The main feature of the forest park is the natural arboretum, dating back to about 1740, with trees, shrubs and exotic plants from all over the world. The castle is now used as a conference centre. Also in the park is a lake stocked with trout, a sculpture trail, orienteering course, picnic and barbecue areas and a Visitor centre with cafe. The park also boasts the largest and longest hedge maze in the world! The park entrance is in the middle of Castlewellan town, within very easy walking distance, one store opens from 7. 30am selling fresh milk, bread etc. There is space for 81 touring vans and 20 tents. It is open all year for parties of 6 or more, less than that it is open March to October.
When we visited in Easter the tent fields were fairly quiet with level pitches and some sheltered areas. Quite a flat forest park, great for kids biking, facilities were clean, but not perhaps the most modern. Friendly family atmosphere, great scenery, the walk around the lake is beautiful, dog and kid friendly site.
