We only live 10 miles away from this campsite, but we found it a lovely site, close to the coast and to Axminster. TheToilet blocks were clean daily and they also left our a bucket and mop for you to wipe the floor in the shower area after use, which was a good idea. The bar was lovely and friendly, and the shop was well stocked.
Our only downside was, because we were camping and didn't require hookup, we were in the lower field which was on a slight slope, and wasn't as nice as the main campsite, but with having children they were able to run around and ride their bikes without worrying about bothering the neighbours! And the owner did use the top corner of this field as a dump site, which was a magnet for the children.
We will return to this campsite again, as we did use it afew time last year.
We have recently returned form visiting this site and were left with very mixed impressions. We found the site expensive, £20/night, and found some of the facilities wanting, which we would not have expected at this price.
The showers worked intermittently in the ladies, and were not of the highest quality. The gents facilities were better, but badly spoilt by lack of attention to detail. In the showers for example, there were only 2 cubicles with seats. None of the cubicles had soap dishes, which meant that soap and shampoo had to be left on the floor. The shower was not adjustable for temperature, I found it too hot for comfort. When finished under the shower it was very difficult to get dried and dressed as the floor was inevitably wet. This for me meant a balancing act trying to dry my feet, whilst trying to keep my clothes dry. Anyone elderly, or with mobility problems would find this a major problem. There were no razor points, and only one of the 4 wash basins had a mirror.
We were on one of the few vacant hard standings, amongst the mainly static caravans. It was our impression that most of the vans were there for the season. The bar served hot food which was fine, and the bar itself was very busy and noisy.
The staff were generally very helpful. This is probably a good site if you have children as there is a dedicated play area, and it looked safe. The site looked newish, with a lot of young trees planted, although not yet mature and offering little privacy or shelter. On the sites own web site it mentions 'commanding views across the Axe Valley, visible through the traditional deciduous hedgerows that surround the property.' it fails to mention that this view is only really available only if you are on the front row. Other units will block your view if you are further back. The site also talks of 'a predominantly 'adults only' touring area, which is ideal for those looking for a quiet beak. ', we were originally directed to this area, only to find a large outfit with children kicking footballs next door.
May 2005 Stayed for 4 nights during the May bank holiday.
Helpful receptionist and wardens (who directed us to our caravan pitch and asked whether they could help us with the awning). Clean, quiet shower blocks. Well stocked shop (pricey with bread at 99p a loaf). There's a bar / restaurant / take-away which we didn't visit. There is also a children's play park set within a wooded area (noisy if you are pitched right next to the park).
On the down side - I found the pitches extremely small and too many caravans were crammed into each area - so much that, although we paid to put our awning up, we didn't because of the total lack of space. We even had to move our car several times (even though we parked in the correct space) just to let other cars through! We had a nice break away but are not planning to return to this site.
