A brilliant site for tents and small campervans. It's right on the edge of the lake on a hillside, just under Place Fell and offers great views of Helvellyn range. It's quite rugged: there is a long dirt track to the camping field (one couple lost their exhaust!) and there are no designated spaces, so you can pitch where you want. It was easy enough getting a flat pitch. Shower block was basic but clean and the queues were fine, even though I was there on the bank holiday weekend.
Great pubs available: Patterdale Hotel is a five minute walk and has a huge beer garden. Glenridding is about a 10-15 minute walk and has a range of good pubs, shops and places to eat.
A range of routes to Helvellyn summit can be reached by walking directly from the site. A nice tourist track steadily climbs to the top from behind the Patterdale Hotel, passing Grisedale Tarn on the way. Nice and easy for all abilities. Similarly, you can get onto the Striding Edge/Swirral Edge routes by taking the short walk into Glenridding.
Great site, will return when next camping in a tent.

Gorgeous views all around the campsite were what initially drew us towards this campsite. Oh, and the divine flapjack that is homemade in the tea rooms! We visited the campsite over the August Bank Holiday weekend, so it was inevitably busy! As others have mentioned, there are only two showers. But people seem to stagger their showering so there is normally a quick queue, even at this busy time! Just beware that when the loo roll runs out, the stock doesn't get replenished until the following morning, so I suggest taking your own. Our pitch was on a flat-ish area of grass, but it seemed that ours was one of the better ones. It did get quite frustrating at times!

We arrived on the Sat and the site was full but when we returned on the Sun it was empty and it remained that way through the wind and rain to the following Fri when once again it was absolutely packed. The toilet block is fine, always loo roll and queues for the two hot showers were never too long. Washing up facilities were fine too. Bins were emptied regularly but filled quickly and were often raided at night by badgers and foxes. The views are amazing and the opportunity to barbeque on the lakeside is just great. The owners have a no car movement policy after 10.30pm so if you're planning a trip to the pub you should walk. Also, the track that leads to the campsite might put some people off. I wouldn't recommend it if you have a large, expensive car that you polish lovingly and are very proud of! A campsite that I will be returning to in Sep for sure.

Would recommend. Small and great views although slopey in places as others have said. It was packed tent to tent when we went! Has its own cafe and only 4.50 pppn this year, plus 2.00 per car per night. Only two showers in female block, but they're free and hot! Also has a covered sink area with hot water for washing up, and washing machines. About a 12 mile circuit to go up Helvellyn from here, and Glenridding with cafes and boating a short walk away.

My husband and I came across this campsite by chance, we were originally looking for another campsite. We were driving along when we saw this site form the other side of the river the view beckoned us to visit. We are very glad we investigated as this is a lovely little campsite with a breath taking view of the Ullswater lake. The campsite is a little slopey in places so be prepared to adjust your sleeping positions so you do not roll out of your tent. There is plenty of water activities not far from the site at reasonable prices, and lots of little places to visit. Do not forget to visit the little waterfalls not far from patterdale.

Fisherground Campsite - Eskdale
Nestling in the beautiful Eskdale Valley close to Scafell, England's highest mountain and Wastwater, this site is a children's paradise in the heart of the Lake District. The first thing that meets you on arrival is the pond, fed by a stream and usually full of children paddling and playing on tyre rafts. The playground has zip wires, climbing frames, tyre rope-swings and adventure courses.
Grass pitches (some with EHU) for tents, motorhomes, VW-sized campervans (no caravans). Refurbished toilets, showers and laundry. Peace is the watchword on the campsite - catering mainly for families and couples with silence after 10.30pm. Don't forget your marshmallows - campfires are allowed in selected areas. Nearby shop and pub. And there's an added extra: the site sits along the route of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway line, with it's own station. Choo Choo! Find out more here

Although we generally like small farm sites this site left alot to be desired. The toilet block was not cleaned in the two days that we stayed and was very dirty. Over the weekend the site became very crowded and we eventually left early and went home! The one good point was the lakeside location and the views. I just feel that there should have been more of a limit on the number of people on site. As we packed up, the campers next door also decided to leave.

August 2004 I really liked this site. It felt like it had a bit more character than some others that we saw around Ullswater that were either a flat field or one with a bar and shop, etc.
It's overlooking the end of the Lake and is definately scenic!
It's also a short walk to a few local pubs - both serving good tucker!!
It's on a bit of a slope and we got a space that was a bit slopey and I kept rolling into my partner but I liked that there wasn't pitches or designated spaces - just pitch wherever you want.
Don't forget your toilet roll!! We had got over reliant on campsites supplying them and were soon reminded that no good camper should arrive without loo roll.
A downside was that although the other campers were nice and friendly - advising us about parking on the grass in case it rains - there was a tent with some lads in it who had had way too much to drink and were quite noisy and annoying just after 11 - I presume coming back from the pub. It would be better if it were a family /couples / no single sex groups site.
Would I go back? Yes definately.
