A weeks stay at this site and it was idyllic even though our first two days were deluged with rain and we had to be towed off the pitch.
The site might not have all the whistles and bells of other sites, and no hard standing but the terraces were level and not overcrowded. It was clean, unpretentious, friendly and everyone on site helpful.
Very peaceful spot, stunning views across the meadows and close to fantastic walks for our dogs. The site owner and local pub were VERY dog friendly. Site shop had basics and local village, 15 minute walk away had a grocery and fish & chip shop.
There were not many people staying when we were there so toilet/shower/ washing up facilities were just fine but they might be a bit stretched when busier.
Most enjoyable site we've been to to date, good value for money, will definitely return.
Well. I rode around the Island with my young son and needed a place to stay with a small tent and two bikes. Freshwater looked like the most likely place to stay and Stoats farm was at the top of the list. This site was just what I wanted, well kept with two flat terraces and area's for playing, wide open spaces but shielded from the coast by Tennyson down. Loads to see in the local area should you be looking and a little shop on site selling Gas and the usual. Just outside the gates is a great little pub with even greater food, a little bit expensive by pub standards but it was worth paying for (excellent pie). The facilities on site are clean and tidy in fact the showers were excellent and FREE.
Down side is a few old wrecks of caravans and a fire pit behind some harris fencing. Other than that small point I will be going back to both the area the site and the pub.
We have just returned from an 11 night stay at Stoats Farm. We are a family of five with two under 5s staying in a tent and campervan combination.
Overall, I agree with one of the earlier reviews - this site has a lot of potential. I do think though that some of the facilities could do with an upgrade.
The site is relaxed, friendly, spacious and is in a lovely setting. The walk from the site to to the Needles across Tennyson Down and back via a farm tea room was a holiday highlight. The local pub is dead handy and does good food. The children were made welcome with colouring packs.
The site facilities: There are electric hook ups which we required. The toilet block is served by cold water only, so no hot water to wash your hands, face or children. Electric shower units heat the showers - these work fine.
There is only one shower in the main ladies bathroom which is a bit small and narrow - I found this awkward for washing myself and little ones. The other showers open to the elements which again we found awkward with youngsters (shivering toddlers, nowhere dry to put your stuff).
The washing up station is one large butler sink with no draining board. I think this is the only time I have been to a campsite with no draining area. Perhaps in the future they will add one, the owner did mention plans for an additional washing up area, it is needed. Hot water to wash up is provided by an electric immersion tank. This ran out of hot water at busy times on four occasions during our stay. So you have a choice of washing up in cold water or waiting an hour for it to reheat.
In summary, I reckon this is a great site for a short stay or if you really don't mind basic facilities (I have discovered I do mind).
Like the more recent reviews I found this campsite to be just perfect for me. Yes compared to some sites I guess it is a bit basic, but as a frequent camper I found it had everything, I required.
Hot showers, with locks on doors, with at least one free when I needed them. Free soap was available and the toilets and showers were cleaned out every morning that I was there.
The staff were very friendly and accommodating, so I felt at home straight away.
There is also a levelled flat area in the upper field more suitable for larger family tents.
Husband and I stayed here for a long weekend. The Campsite is situated in a lovely part of the IOW. We enjoyed the walks out from the campsite towards Alum Bay, Tennyson Monument is a must see - you can even see it from the site.
The toilets and showers were always kept very clean and tidy. The reception/shop stocks the essentials - IE Milk, Bread and Ice Cream!
We read a review about abandoned caravans - Yes, there were old caravans, but they were away from the pitches on the upper field at the back. I’m glad the review didn’t put us off staying here – it was a picturesque setting, with great sun sets.
We stayed in the lower field, close to the back hedge - these seemed flatter for the bigger tents. Smaller tents had a choice of the whole field. Campervans and motorhomes seemed to have the upper field.
We would definitely stay here again and we have also recommended to friends already.
Before arriving at the site we were a bit wary as we had read previous reviews about it being basic and a very hilly site.
Upon arriving we managed to find a flat area (one of many!)to pitch our tent which was sheltered from the wind and well spaced from other tents. Although the site was busy at no point did we feel that we were crowded. The owners were very welcoming and extremely helpful and friendly.
The site is basic but the showers were always hot and clean!
The area itself is lovely and easily explorable by foot. There is a pub opposite the site that served delicious meals - highly recommend the seafood!
Where to begin?! My husband, our dog & I just had the most wonderful 4 night stay at Stoats Farm. We pitched in the lower field designated for tents. I have to say I noticed nothing of the untidy caravans & outbuildings mentioned in the most recent review & am unsure why this was mentioned as nothing detracted from our enjoyment of this lovely site.
The views were beautiful from our pitch at the top of the lower field. We were slightly concerned we may not find a flat pitch & that it may be crowded but neither concerns came to light & despite visiting during school hols and Cowes week!
On 3 out of 4 clear nights the views of the sun setting behind the hills were nothing but spectacular & I heard one youngster say 'Mummy it looks like someone has been painting in the sky!' Magical!
There was loads of space for everyone, we amongst others played frisbee, flew kites & played ball. Good old fashioned fun & and a lovely relaxed atmosphere.
Stoats farm is a 'basic site' but this is exactly what we look for. The toilets and showers were clean, with plenty of hot water & we never had to queue. Basis in the shop, & pub right next door was great with amazing food.
Owners very relaxed & friendly, no usual formalities and we paid when we left!
Finally the campsite is a great location, in my opinion, for the best part of the Island. But that bit you will have to discover for yourself!
We were rather put off when we arrived at this site but having booked for 3 nights, we decided to give it a fair trial.
There are 2 fields and the first one had the hook ups which we required. On arrival, we seemed to be the only touring unit there but there were a lot of old caravans permanently parked around the edges of the field. Some of these were in a bad state of repair and the ground around them very overgrown. Others were owned and used by local people, who were very friendly. We found a pitch that had least view of the tatty caravans and also least view of the rubbish area which was overflowing and unpleasant. We were very concerned about this, but the lady owner explained that the rubbish should have been collected and she was trying to arrange for this to be done. Sure enough, shortly afterwards this was tidied up.
The location was lovely - at the foot of the Tennyson downs with fabulous walks from the site. The weather was gorgeous and we were prepared to enjoy our stay until an inconsiderate caravan owner parked right in front of us and erected a large awning (obstructing all views) when there was a whole field to choose from.
We had all but then decided that this was not the place for us when we discovered the second field. This was set slightly higher from the first, but offered fantastic views and no tatty caravans! It was steep in places but the top offered some flatish pitches. It was obviously designed for tents but on enquiry to the lady owner (Pat) she was quite happy for us to take our motorhome there. This we did and found ourselves very happy there with plenty of space and several delightful young campers who were very friendly, considerate and well behaved. The downside was no hook ups but this was more compensated by the incredible sunsets.
The facilities were basic but clean and OK generally. There was a shop at Reception selling basics which was useful. Pat was extremely friendly and helpful. The whole site was very relaxed and low key.
Stayed at this site for 3 nights during a cycling weekend. On arrival greeted by very friendly staff. Small on-site shop that does the basics. All fine there.
However, the field we were told to pitch in was not good, especially for the suspension of my poor car! Also the field is on a bit of a hill, which didn't cause too much of a problem.
I think the worst part about it was the toilets! Terrible mess, didn't look as though they got cleaned very much, tiles falling of the walls in the shower, block drains. One person I over heard did say that, and I quote 'You come out of the shower dirtier than you go in'. Location and views very nice, only a short walk to reach Tennyson downs.
Nice pub right on doorstep, although I never used so cannot comment on food / service etc.
In my opinion to improve this site I would demolish the toilet / shower block and rebuild new ones and definitely make a gravel roadway leading to the pitches.
The review by 2004mickd is spot on - a great location, the toilets and showers have recently been tiled and were very clean - loads of hot water too, most welcome. I'll certainly go back there again.
Lynne and David are really friendly and most welcoming. It is a relatively basic site but highly recommended.
