We spent three nights at Cruachan Farm. It is an attractive site with sloping fields and pretty woodlands bordering on one side. The slope of the camping fields was a bit offputting, but further investigation revealed gems of pitches in the woodlands here and there. The views of Ben Glass are wonderful. Ben Lawers is also close to hand, and although we didn't walk up on this occasion, we have done so before and can vouch for a great climb.
Killin is only three miles down the road, and here you will find a small but well stocked Co-op, and of course the beautiful Falls of Dochart, which are always worth a look. It seemed obvious to us that Cruachan Farm is easily the most attractive of the campsites and holiday parks dotted along the way.
Cruachan is a friendly, lively site, with a relaxed feel. There was a buzz of chatter and life around the place, although everyone adhered to the 10pm rule and it settled very peacefully later on.
The kids all loved the playpark and when the sun was out, so were they. Our eldest son joined up with a group of boys, and ran off to build a woodland den. He was in his element.
The negatives now - the facilities are basic, too cramped, and a bit grubby and smelly. The showers are rather pathetic. The tumble drier in the lower block was broken, and after over 24 hours of rain with three young kids in tow, that wasn't a blessing. The owners, although friendly, seemed unconcerned by this news. I ended up carting my wet washing to the upper block in lashing rain, cursing appliances that don't work.
On the plus side, the weekend we were there, we saw a LOT of rain, and the site appeared to cope well and drain effectively.
Cruachan Farm is good value for money - we paid £15 per night for two adults, three children and a 5 metre tent. Apart from the facilities being a big meh, it's a nice site and we would return.
I stayed for 5 nights Sunday to Friday. This is a large site with good views to neighbouring hills. It is a short walk (boots required) down to the loch side. There is a fantastic restaurant on site which serves great food at a decent price. No need to travel the 3 miles to Killin for a decent evening meal. The farmhouse porch serves as a reception and a small shop which I found stocked the usual essentials like, milk and chocolate! The folks were very friendly and very helpful. I was on a sailing course at the watersports centre next to the site, and didn't finish till 5. 30pm on my last day, and the owners allowed me to keep the unit on site till I could go home.
A couple of toilet blocks which, although small, 2 toilets, 2 showers, I never had to wait.
A very clean, friendly and Quiet site, ideal for the local countryside, and one I would use again.
Visited the site for a second time although 2 years apart. I was concerned that the standard of the facilities would have deteriorated with age but I was pleasantly surprised to find they hadn't. The pitches for tents are not on the level so finding the perfect pitch is not easy. Having said that it was not a major issue.
The warden and staff are all very helpful (to the point of lending equipment for the duration) and appear committed to providing a high quality service.
The toilets and dishwashing facilities were as clean as was reasonably possible although the rubbish bins did seem a bit overwhelmed!
This time we used the on site restaurant and were impressed by the quality of the food and the portions that were served up. Just don't expect a drive through service! The food made up for the wait and the price was reasonable too.
A friendly family atmosphere with great views and happy children!
Cruachan Farm is a lovely camp site set close to Loch Tay. We were there before main school hols so the site was reasonably quiet. The toilet/shower blocks were a bit small but very clean. (2 blocks both with 2 toilets/2 showers in ladies)
The camping field looks small and sloping but if you spend time looking around you will find lots of smaller areas which are flat and secluded.
A visit to the restaurant is also recommended.
The walk through the woods to Loch Tay was a good way to finish off the evening and you could walk to the log cabins on the next site, here you can hire a little motor boat for 4 hours (fits 5 people) and tour thr loch or fish.
We had no children but there is a good play area and plenty of space to play.
This was my first Camping trip since I was a kid, over 25 years ago and I have to say I picked a cracker of a location for my first trip. As a solo female camper I just wanted a weekend break away and was amazingly lucky with the weather. (A suntan in April!)
The campsite location is spectacular with loads to do in the local area, I crammed masses into 4 days : Ben Lawers, Kenmore, Killin, lots of walks and red squirrel spotting! The campsite was clean, well maintained and felt really safe. My fellow campers were really friendly (albeit curious that I was in a large tent on my own!) and one very kind camper helped me pitch my tent on my first night. The prices were also amongst the most competitive for Campers that I have found, even in High Season.
The showers were hot and clean (although I was always one of the first people to use them each morning which may have made a difference!) the washing up facilities were great and I had many friendly conversations in the line to use the washing up area.
I also sampled the restaurant one night, and found the food to be great and good value for money, well worth checking out if you can't be bothered to cook one night.
Killin is a great place to visit locally (handy Co-op for provisions) and of course the Falls of Dochart and many pubs. If you are looking for good Wifi, (the campsites own is very erratic - my only negative, they proudly claim they have WIFI but I never successfully got it to work) then I can recommend the public bar at the Coach House Hotel in Killin, they even let me plug in my Laptop for electricity, all for the cost of a Glass of Coke!
A brilliant base, and I will definitely be going back, next time I will be taking some of the family and I have already recommended the Campsite to many friends at work.
This is a lovely site. We came for the weekend with a small group of families and the owners could not have been more accommodating.
What started out as a booking for 4 tents and a caravan became 2 tents, 2 tourers and a static, as more and more of us got worried about the weather! We needn't have worried as the weather held, but the owners were very patient with us changing the booking 3 times.
The site is very well placed only 3 miles out of Killin and only a short walk through the forest (long enough to be an adventure for the kids) to the shores of Loch Tay.
There is ample space for the kids to run about, a small play park and most excitingly, a burn to paddle in! The site is sloping but well drained. There is a good mix of tents, tourers and statics which can be hired.
Midges were present but not as bad as in other places, and the toilet block was basic but perfectly adequate. The ladies' showers were lovely and hot although the cubicle was quite compact!
We didn't try the coffee shop as we were content to be outside while the weather was half decent (we'd just spent a week in Gairloch storms).
There was a relaxed atmosphere - not too many rigidly enforced rules - but then no-one seemed to want to misbehave. All in all we loved the site and will be back.
The site is just over 3 miles from Killin, though be warned, it is a long 3 miles if you are planning on walking it.
The site was busy the first night we stayed, but there was plenty of choice for pitching our tent and lots of space around the tents. There are two large fields for tents, with another area for caravans. There are two toilet blocks, one between the tent fields and one for the caravan area. The ladies was basic but generally clean, though toilet paper could sometimes be lacking. I also wouldn't waste my 20p on the hairdryer, cold air at a low pressure. My partner did comment that the gents seemed rather dirty.
Killin is a lovely little town, with a few dog friendly pubs and there are lovely walks beside Loch Tay too.
It was our first time at Cruachan Farm but certainly won't be our last. Apart from a few people staying 'up the hill' in static vans we had the whole site to ourselves!
We only used the toilet block once or twice but it was clean, plenty of toilet paper, soap etc and an adequate heater.
The walks from the site are lovely and the village of Killin, a short drive away has all you need during your stay. Restaurant was shut which was a shame but understandable when the site was so quiet.
It looked good from the outside! Our youngest loved the playpark which was perfect for him.
A whole campsite to ourselves for £14 per night - perfect!
This site is in a glorious location and is very friendly. It is undulating, so caravanners and motorhomers might need to consider chocks and can be soggy in parts after heavy rain so worthwhile having mats or pitching at the top end of the site. (Owners are helpful about advising on this.)
There is some hardstanding and some EHU. Having stayed here in a tent in a horrendous gale last year, the owners suggested we find a more sheltered part of the site this time and went into the woodland area where we all managed to find relatively level pitches though they weren't any here for very large tents.
The toilet block was spotless and warm (this was wonderful when we woke up on the Sunday morning to a heavy frost!) and although had fixed head showers (which I personally dislike), had proper shower trays and curtains and a dry area with hooks to hang clothes, towels etc. Hairdryer available. There's also a laundry and dishwashing area. The water was HOT!
There's a small young children's play area. Dogs are welcome. Reception has some basics (including free range eggs). For most of the season (not right at the beginning or at the end of the season), there is a restaurant on site.
This too is very friendly and good value for money with ample portions, good choice and children's menu. I've eaten in restaurants charging double the price less well. Worthwhile booking a meal if you want it at a specific time. If you like red wine, the house red is excellent.
This is not a site for those wanting constant entertainment provided; it is much more for those who enjoy being out in the countryside and walking / fishing / boating or visiting places.
Killin and the Falls of Dochart is 3 miles down the road, where you'll find pubs, golf course, a co-op, fish and chips, etc. Boating is available a 10 minute walk from the site. Ben Lawers visitor centre is a 15 minute drive away. Kenmore, about 30 minutes drive away, has a whisky centre, boat hire and the Scottish Crannog Centre and Aberfeldy also has a whisky centre plus a good variety of shops.
As a singleton with tent and car I paid £11.00 for two nights.
What a fantastic campsite. First trip to this site. What a find. Full of like minded people and all respecting each other's space and not having noise late at night.Delighted to be with so many fellow dog lovers. Also lovely to be on a campsite where the owners kept an eye out but were not regimented with rules.
Site clean and facilities clean. Lovely walks in woods to Loch Tay. This is a site I would happily pitch at as a lone camper. Hilly in parts as previous reviews have stated but we found an elevated position away from the main spots.
There is lots to do in the area although we are local and were only there for 2 nights so did not venture off site. Killin is lovely and Kenmore at other end of Loch. Ben Lawers is close by and there is pony trekking and water sports too.
Only thought was another toilet block would not go amiss.
10 out of 10 - would go back tomorrow - did not want to leave. Will try out restaurant next time.
