Needing to fit our first camp of the year in & combine it with seeing my parents we basically left it too late. Nowhere in the area had any electric hook ups left (three days before bank holiday weekend) & we'd pretty much given up. Getting a bit desperate I looked at the campsites without pictures or current reviews & came across this one. Nobody had reviewed it in quite a while but it was in the right place & sounded fine. We rang the number not expecting there to be any hook ups left. To our surprise there were some. To be fair we weren't expecting too much & it seemed fine on arrival.
The pub is directly on the road side & the people seemed quite friendly. They gave us a card for the security gate & explained where we could pitch. We drove down past the statics to the field set aside for tents, expecting to see it nearly full (9pm on a Friday night on the May Day Bank Holiday). Wrong!
Only one other tent in the whole field.
Alarm bells ringing.
To be fair, it was quite a nice setting. Not exactly picturesque but not bad. Right next to an A road but noise wasn't that noticeable.
The reasons it was empty, and remained so throughout the weekend became apparent during our stay.
It's not something that you actually think about on a campsite with hook ups as its pretty much standard but there wasn't anywhere to swill your slops away or wash your pots up.
The toilets were not cleaned once, either male or female in the three nights we stayed there. There was no loo roll in the gents during our stay, the bin overflowed onto the floor & remained there. The used razor that was on one of the sinks when we arrived, is probably still there now (we were there two weeks ago).
Only two showers & only two sinks with hot water but 50% of both not working throughout our stay(in the gents).
The only time we saw the staff was when we went in the pub to pay (you might think the low standards would be reflected in the price, but you'd be wrong, Pretty much what you would pay for a top class family camp site).
It's a shame really as the location is good to enjoy a lovely part of the world. The campsite could, with the very slightest of effort by the owners be basic, but very, very nice.
This site was basic but cheap and cheerful. There is not a play park but space for children to play. The shower block was clean and had recently been re-tiled but the showers were not all working at the time of our visit. The pub at this site had good food and this site was ideal for us for a weekend stay.
We (the Mrs and I) popped off for a quiet weekend without the kids and wanted to see a bit off the borders, we found salutation inn to be perfect for this. A basic site, but very clean, tidy and very very friendly. It is also cheap.
We managed to get to visit Kelso, Jedburgh, and Coldstream on the Saturday and Berwick and Eyemouth pn the Sunday before heading home. So like I said it's perfectly situated for doing a bit of exploring the area.
The pub is quite a 'local' pub, but very friendly and reasonably priced for both food and drinks and just on the entrance of the site so a bit too convenient for the Saturday night!
However on the downside, although clean the toilet/shower block could do with a little updating, only 2 showers in both men and women's, the ground is also hard so if you have them, take your spare pegs and don't forget your mallet like I did. Not much for kids to do but space for them to play ballgames or play hide and seek.
Overall an enjoyable weekend was had, if you get a chance, visit Eyemouth just over the border in Scotland even if it is just to feed the wild seals.
Just returned from 2 nights here, over the Bank Holiday weekend, we stayed in the overspill field, it used to be the beer garden of the Salutation Inn, but it was perfect for us, behind the shower block just a small private area with plenty of grass and trees for the kids to play hide and seek behind. Owners very helpful and constantly checking toilet areas as there were a few problems with blocked toilets but they dealt with these swiftly. We really enjoyed this site, as well as being cheap there was a pleasant cheerful atmosphere and the pub did wonderful meals which need to be booked in advance as they get really busy! Although the site is technically in the middle of nowhere we really enjoyed ourselves and would definitely visit again.
