On arrival we were immediately offered help with setting up and during our stay the owner was very friendly and helpful. The site is very well-maintained, Dennis is always busy keeping it up to scratch.
The toilets and bathrooms are modern and spotless, despite the sometimes inclement weather. Hot water is plentiful and free of charge. There is a separate kitchen with washing-up area and freezer for campers' use, again spotless. The static caravan also seemed modern and well-kept, so I will be recommending that to non-camping friends.
If fishing is your thing, all pitches surround a lovely lake with carp, mirror carp and koi (so I am told). This is the only drawback if you have very small children (but it is the only drawback I can think of for this site). If you're not a fisherman, the atmosphere is still tranquil and the lake gives a pleasant view, unlike some other nearby sites with their rows upon rows of caravans, tents, and the general impression of a prison camp.
There is a small children's play area, but our kids spent their time running around. They certainly didn't feel anything was lacking.
We stayed for two weeks and were beginning to feel as if we could stay permanently, if only the weather, etc. , would allow. It was also very reasonably priced at around £16 a night, without hidden extras.
We will definitely go back, hopefully bringing friends and family.
The surrounding area is nice enough. Chapel St Leonards is very handy for the little supermarket, a few amusements and long sandy beaches. Skegness is not far away, with all the fairground rides a child could wish for. The nearest launderette is in Ingoldsmell. One little gem is Church Farm Village, tucked away in Skegness. It is free, and the whole family found something entertaining. Alford is a very pleasant Lincolnshire market town, with a craft market and something for those of us less inclined to the bright lights of Skeg-Vegas.
In short a most enjoyable stay. Small, immaculate, secluded, friendly are just some of the adjectives that spring to mind.
Pitches were generous, the toilet block spotless and we were not hurried to pack up our belongings and leave at speed come the close of our stay.
The host is quite simply a gent; keen to help, diligent in his approach and quite rightly proud of his site.
The area has much to do if one investigates beyond the bright lights of Skegness. Of particular note was the excellent Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre; a museum of fantastic quality and importance.
All in all a terrific week was spent in a wonderful part of the country. We will certainly be returning.
I am almost reluctant to post a positive review of this camp site, as I know that it will increase it's popularity, possibly making it harder for me to rebook! This must currently be one of Lincolnshire's best kept camping secrets. However, as I found this camp site through this web site, it's only fair that I repay that debt.
What can I say about this lovely site. It was more like a community than a camp, with guests always willing to chat and help. It was like staying in an old friend's, well kept garden.
You could hardly hope for a more genial and helpful host, than you will find in Dennis. Upon our arrival, I wasn't sure if our e. H. U. Lead would reach the electric socket. Dennis immediately offered the free use of his own (which we didn't eventually need).
He was also very helpful in advising us as to which tent orientation would give the best views, sun and protect from the prevailing wind. As his is a small and intimate camp site, he appears to do everything himself. It seemed that he only stopped moving, when having friendly chats with the guests, for whom he always made time. I hope that he gets the opportunity to have a well deserved rest when out of season. During our stay he worked long and hard to ensure the happiness of his guests.
Dennis keeps the site in excellent condition. The pitches are of an excellent size and are almost manicured. The lawns and mature hedges are better than my own, or any council run park that I have seen for many a year. There are a few pleasant flower borders around the site, but nothing too 'chintzy' nor precocious.
Dennis is rightfully proud of the toilets and showers, which he keeps very clean. After Dennis bought this site, he demolished and rebuilt this area to provide more up to date and spacious rooms with additional toilets/facilities.
There is a washing up room with a free freezer, which is excellent for the kids ice pops and for preparing 'freeze blocks' (excellent for overnight cool box use, rather than leaving them noisily running).
There is a toilet/wash room and a combined toilet/shower room for each sex. Which is a more generous allocation than planning rules require for a site with so few pitches. Each unit is separate and has it's has it's own lockable door.
This is convenient at avoiding queues, as the gender rule isn't strictly adhered to when there is high demand (quite sensible planning). The smaller rooms are quite spacious, being large enough for washing, shampooing or shaving.
Whereas the toilet/shower rooms are even bigger than in some homes that I've seen. They are roomy enough to accommodate an adult and child together, even in the shower cubicle. These rooms are contemporary styled in fairly neutral colours. Again, like the rest of the site, an exercise in understated elegance. Nothing that anyone is likely to find displeasing.
The showers are free and there was always plenty of hot water. The only slight niggle is the need to re-press the shower button every twenty seconds or so, but that soon became second nature. Doubtless this environmentally friendly, cost reducing measure, helps to keep the showers free of charge.
I'm not an angler myself, but the fishing pond was a lovely feature, as well kept as the rest of the site. It appeared to be brimming with large carp. Gently stroking the pond's surface with a blade of grass could easily coax up to two dozen fish to approach.
Our party consisted of my wife, our son (7), daughter (6), and myself. We adults were able to enjoy the tranquillity of the area, whilst our kids safely enjoyed the company of other children on the site and playing on the small playground. We always felt that we were all safe and secure. This was added to by the relative seclusion of the site, at the end of a farm lane on the outskirts of a small village. That week I felt we were closer as a family than we had been for the rest of the year.
The nearest pub is within easy walking distance, although we tended to venture slightly further afield. We can recommend 'The Trafalga', for excellent pub food, and 'The Admiral Benbow', a very small pub with a friendly atmosphere, on the small promenade, overlooking a pristine beach. Both are in Chapel St Leonards, which is a pleasant 2. 5 mile cycle ride (or drive) along country back roads.
For those who prefer their entertainment much livelier, Ingoldmells is about 4 miles away (home to Fantasy Island amusement park/market and also to Butlins). Also, 8 miles away is the larger seaside resort of Skegness, which has most every facility you could expect and plenty of shops/supermarkets for provisions.
Never a shortage of things for the family (of all ages) to do. I can recommend a Tuesday or Thursday evening at Skegness Stadium for 'petrol heads' (kids are free and discount advance tickets are available, online or from the stall opposite the Embassy Theatre). Where we enjoyed banger & stock car racing, motorcycle stunt show and 'Bigfoot' car crushing. If we had been staying for longer, we may have gone to one of the Embassy Theatre shows, as it seemed to attract some well known names and productions.
We're already thinking of booking the same site for next year. What better recommendation could we give?
We had a great 4 day break at this site welcomed by the friendly owner Dennis.
The site is a credit to him, immaculately cut grass, spotless shower block, lovely carp pond and every level pitch would be a pleasure to camp on.
Great location, close to everything the East Coast has to offer ranging from the quaint villages en-route to the sights and sounds of Skeg-Vegas, try the Italian at Chapel for fab food and the Trafalgar for good pub grub.
We have booked to go back in September so we hope that speaks for itself how highly we rate this site.
Just spent our second camping trip here after reading the reviews on here.
True to all the other reviews it was an oasis of calm just a short drive from skegvegas and all that is wrong with british caravan holidays.
Wonderful site, well looked after and the toilets and showers cant be faulted.
The owner Dennis was very helpful and on hand if needed.
Our two kids had a great time on the swings and making friends with the other kids on site.
Not much in hogthorpe just one pub and a post office which didn't stock much, but shops are a short drive away in Chapel St Leonards
If you want peace and quiet and a relaxing time this is the place for you
The fishing looked good but I`m not a fisherman so don't really know
Plenty of fairground rides and slot machines not too far away.
If you want a nice quiet day at the beach just drive up the coast to Sandilands and park by the golf club or Sutton on Sea which has a paddling pool and playground for the kids.
Once again a wonderful break. Have already booked to go again in July. Dennis the owner was his usual helpful self.
Everyone on the site was friendly and my children had a wonderful time riding their bikes, on the swings and fishing with the other children on site.
The site is perfectly located for those wanting to get away from it all, at ten o' clock the only sound is that of grown ups talking round tables drinking the odd glass of wine.
The toilets and showers are cleaned regularly, there is no shop now in Hogsthorpe and one of the pubs is changing hands but shops and supermarkets are easily reachable in Skeg-vegas, a mere 10 minute drive.
Just returned from a weeks stay and cant wait to go back, Dennis is a legend nothing too much trouble and always stops for a natter,
The site is immaculate with a good shower facilities spotlessly clean, the fishing is great and most people have been before and are friendly and most help out with tackle etc,
If you want peace and quiet and great company this is the place for you, don't waste yours or dennis's time if you are looking for a club and activities, if you want a little piece of heaven see you there
We have just returned from our bank holiday weekend at this wonderful site that we cannot praise highly enough.
Dennis, the owner, is fantastic - friendly, welcoming and always ready to help. He maintains a spotless site, perfectly lawned with immaculate toilet/shower block and generous pitches, all with electric hook-ups.
There is a charming fishing pond in the middle of the site, again maintained perfectly. There are 3 swings at one side of the campsite, which were a nice bonus for our happy 4 year old son.
Thanks to Dennis, the most hospitable and cordial of owners, and other friendly fellow campers, staying at this beautiful small campsite didn't feel like camping at all but more like staying at a friend's house (or garden:-).
In the end we spent most of our time just enjoying the campsite instead of making the planned trips to the seaside, which is located within a stone's throw (about 5 min drive to Chapel St Leonard). We absolutely fell in love with this site and will be definitely coming back.
