What a lovely camp site. Very well kept and owners extremely helpful. We stayed next to the stream and had lots of room for our 4 pitches (group of 8). The toilets are fine and kept clean and are not too far away at all.
York is only a short car journey away and the owners booked our taxi for us. There is also a boat going into York in the morning and returns early evening.
The ducks were really cute an very tame.
We will definitely be booking this site next year - can't wait in fact, had a brilliant weekend.
Well maintained site. Toilets and showers I feel are a little dated, but never the less very clean with no shortage of hot water. Site a tad expensive at £24 per night with awning but well placed close to river. Was also able to use small slip way free and also fishing free, to people on site. I would stay again.
Shops in near by Copmanthorpe also good. Ship Inn, when open provides good food, with York only 15 min cycle ride to centre, or river boat that departs in the morning and returns late afternoon.
We have stayed in York many times but this was the first time in a motorhome, we booked the site as we are familiar with it and it's location although we have never stayed there before.
We did feel a little shoe horned in and the people next to us were very close when they parked their car.
The site is in good condition although facilities a little dated, it is well cared for.
Did feel that staff on site did offer advice for parking the motorhome. Although we requested hard standing when booking back in May we did not get it.
Maybe would stay again but not in peak season due to the number of other units and the close proximity to each other.
My only complaint is the price! The facilities just don't justify £20+ per night when there are so many similar but less expensive sites around. Having said that, the site is well maintained and kept spotless by friendly, helpful staff. It's a bit of a hike from the camping areas to the toilet block but we do bring our own 'night time emergency facility'; I do appreciate that having a road in the middle isn't exactly ideal.
The worst thing about our York break was making the mistake of patronising 'Domino's Pizza'. Suffice to say we won't do it again. The chip shop in Bishopthorpe was excellent with most things freshly cooked to order.
Set in the midst of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, a family run farm with a stream meandering through the site and breathtaking views, with plenty to do nearby. Tent and campervan pitches with or without electric. Five star shower block with showers, washbasins, toilets, disabled and family room. Sinks for pot washing, a kettle and microwave, charge points, communal fridge freezers. Fire pits are available to hire. Wifi
A small shop sells essentials and an on-site cafe serves delicious food and drinks! Freshly brewed coffee, sausage sandwiches, or warm pastries, in the evening, enjoy stone-baked pizzas. Luxury timber pods and two magical bell tents with private hot tubs are also available to hire. Don't forget to meet their friendly family of alpacas! And all within five minutes of Bolton Abbey and Hesketh Farm Park Find out more here
We booked last minute for this site but were not dissappointed in the least.
We had a pitch overlooking the river which was just fantastic. To open the blinds on a morning and look out over the river was so lovely. The children loved feeding the ducks and all the little ducklings.
The toilets were clean but maybe a bit dated, but certainly were not a problem.
There was no shop on site but there are ones not far away in Bishopthorpe.
Pub was in a fantastic location and the river bus was ideally placed.
The only downside was that everyone was tightly packed, but it was a Bank Holiday!
Would most definitely return but only if pitch was next to river and not in the main site over the road.
This was a last minute summer holiday booking. The owner was most helpful in accommodating us, the day before we arrived!
The site was excellent, in terms of layout and facilities. We were about 10 yards from the pub - and paid for it on two occasions in the eight days there - till 1-2am - so beware if you need your sleep. The pub is quite expensive too, in comparison to Birmingham.
The grass was maintained daily around the units, which again caused minor issue with the van being covered in cuttings which we were unable to wash off due to the site being water-logged. This said, the site looks immaculate all the time.
The river boat is well worth the trip, as other posters have mentioned, and very reasonable.
Again, the Wardens were always willing and able to help - our gas pipe split and we were offered a metre replacement for nothing, nothing was too much trouble.
Although a unique selling point of this site are the free showers, you should be aware that the site is fairly expensive at £19 per night. This is our most expensive site for quite a few years, and we have stayed at many varied approved sites in this time.
Overall; accommodating Wardens, good toilet/shower facilities with no queues, expensive given there are no other facilities, very well maintained, very close to York (<3m) Good transport links (bus/boat)
We were recommended this site by a friend, they recommended to book and ask for a riverside pitch, there is a road (very quiet) which splits the riverside camping from the main site. Sure enough when we arrived we were given an area overlooking the river, by a helpful warden.
To me this is an ideal site if you are camping in a tent for the first time and fancy a weekend to try it out, as been riverside gives the impression of being in the middle of nowhere, yet you are not far from civilisation, towns, shops etc. There are no facilities riverside though.
There is a river bus to York based about 100 yards away which is handy and a nice way to arrive in York (better then trying to park there)Leaves and arrives back at decent times too. There is a pub here also, which is very nice, with beer garden, does pub grub, not an amazing choice but nicely priced.
Have been to this site several times, once the pub was closed because of a private party, however the warden said this was the first time this had happened, and we later found out it was one of the landlords close relatives, so we'll let him off :-) The pub is fairly newly refurbished as was very badly flooded a few years back, and is now flood friendly !
The site was quiet on a night even though it been close to the pub. The shower blocks on the site are dated, but they work, and there clean and hot, the whole site is well cared for and maintained. Its very nice for a long weekend
Nice caravan site amenities were of good standard. We were parked near river possibly not suitable for small children, however, main park away from river. Boat three times weekly to York. Pub 200 yds from site. Bishopthorpe 1 mile away 3 pubs great food and local shops eg co-op.
We booked this site at short notice and were suprised how many sites were full - but the wardens here were helpful and friendly and promised to find us a space, which they did. Despite being squashed in between 2 rows of statics, and surrounded by other vans we enjoyed our stay. The warden was excellent, the facilities were spotless and the free hot showers were great - with no queues. We went in to York on the river bus. I'd recommend this site to anyone. The only drawback was the lack of free space for the kids to play, although they enjoyed chasing the ducks.
