I agree with the last review really, I really struggled with this site. It is the most expensive site we have stayed at £8 a head, cost us £160 for 5 nights :-( with no ehu, no extra facilities and no hot water for washing up!
We had booked EHU, but there was no room for us near any when we arrived. The reaction was tough really! There was no rare breeds farm or bunny things as advertised on the website and the climbing frame in the playground was broken
Then we were treated to some young man riding a quad bike around the fields at speed, pulling wheelies and skidding all over the place. ( we think he empties the bins) He only stopped near our tent once we told him too and blocked his way through with our cars. He carried on all weekend around the other tents and fields. We were most worried about the children's safety, but the noise of his quad was painful as well.
The worse bit was no hot water to wash up in, the owner said he's switched it off and wasn't switching it back on again, because weeks ago some-one left the hot tap on all night, easily solved with a time switch or taps that stop! Therefore we had no hot water to wash up in for 5 days, we ended up boiling kettles (with no EHU).
There are only 2 toilets with a shower in each, so in the morning 2 people showering you've had it, the queues were awful, if the pub is open you can use those toilets, but it was shut for 2 of the days we were there.
The pub is overpriced, very disorganised and cramped when busy. We waited 2 hours for food. Having said that the food is good when you get it and the beer is good also. The views and location are beautiful, but the main road is very busy and noisy.
Our holiday was saved by a trip to Gullivers Kingdom in Matlock Bath, it was fabulous and SO well run, then we went for a meal at Flamenco Tapas Bar in Buxton - amazing service and food, highly recommended.
We have just returned from Lime Tree Park near Buxton. We arrived and we were shown to out spot on the field which was next to the toilet/shower block and that was our allocation. Great start.
The field we were on is at the top of a very steep road and that is how the children access the play area as they go down this road, around by the static caravans and up uneven steps to a play area that desperately needs new equipment.
Beware of price differences in the shop as we noticed that items had one price already printed on them and another dearer price label was added to the top, for example Pringles stated 49p but they were requesting 70p.
A strict 10pm noise abatement is in place which is fortunate as we were under the flight path to Manchester and sleep was in short supply from between the flights ceasing and the farm animals in adjacent fields starting the dawn chorus at 4.45 most mornings.
On a plus side the staff were very friendly and the shower/toilet block was clean and even had music piped into it.
This is not a bad campsite but we have been to better
Stayed here 3 nights. Not a place for rest and relaxation. Tissington Trail short cycle down busy A515. Camped on field by road with EHU. Beer garden for the pub is just over the wall. Noisy with young children until 10pm most nights. They also ran around our caravan playing hide & seek. We were unfortunate that there were a crowd of rowdy teenagers staying, who were having a great time shouting and cheering, as they played on the children's swings in the beer garden unchecked at 10.30pm. Doesn't seem to be any rules or discipline. Wash up sinks were in our field, uncovered as previously stated and were filthy when we arrived, but also Elsan empty point is right next to these sinks. You can literally rest your elbow on the sink as you empty your toilet. It has no lid, and to flush there is a tap and short hose pipe on the wall. Fresh water tap is at other side of the sinks, still quite near to Elsan and drain. Toilet block can be a long walk across the car park for people camping in the larger fields. There were about 30 tents camping that weekend and the 2 showers and toilets were very busy with queues in the mornings and got quite dirty. The cockerel crowed from 3.30pm for an hour, then the donkey's started braying. Food was very nice,
Struggling with this place a little bit - went September '08 with 2 friends. Pitched in the large, flat field to the side of the pub and were blessed with good weather. Food, drink and hospitality in the pub were excellent. As it was fairly quiet, the lack of toilets / showers wasn't an issue.
Went again in May '09, and was disappointed to find that most of the rare breed farm had been taken out to make way for presumably more camping; we were shown to a spot at the rear of the pub in an area that had been a pig enclosure in September.
There are a few remnants of the farm left; the cockerels roaming around were a particular highpoint - especially the crowing at 4a.M!
The new ground has not been well prepared for tents; we were camping on very uneven ground with large stones underfoot.
The food and service in the pub had also gone downhill (waited for nearly an hour for food to arrive after ordering), but the owners are still very friendly and helpful.
This place is OK for a night or two with friends, but have stayed at better sites in the area.
We stopped for 3 nights and this is the reason for my review so I can warn fellow EHU users that you will be on the field to the side of the pub rather then behind it.
You may feel that this is not a big problem, but on the Bank holiday weekend the A road was very busy with mainly motorbikes and very noisy most of the time.
It was a real shame as when you went around the back of the pub it was lovely and quiet and has stunning panoramic views and a lot calmer atmosphere, so did feel like we had drawn the short straw with having the hook-up at the side of the pub.
The showers I have to say were a bit hit and miss with the hot water ( stood in one for 10 mins hoping the hot water would kick in, but to no avail) if the owners left a mop and bucket in there at least people could clean up after themselves rather than the grass and dirt building up as the day went on.
The pub itself is great! lovely interior and the food was fantastic! The staff were run of their feet that weekend but the food never paid the price it was all lovely. The owner Graham is a really nice guy as well.
Good site for only a couple of nights and beware of the A road if you at the front!
As per other reviews, great atmosphere in the pub, great welcome and very good food. Great breakfast too! The campsite toilet and shower facilities are restricted (the landlord cannot extend them due to planning restrictions) but they open the pub throughout the day. We stayed for one night but will go back. Close to the Tissington Trail for mountain biking / cycling folks.
We stayed here for only one night, on the car park at the side of the pub.
The toilet blocks (2)where at the front of the pub and key coded. Both had a toilet, sink and shower in them. They where very clean but with only staying one night I did not use the shower. I would imagine with only two it would be very busy in the summer.
The food is fantastic and would highly recommend you book a table on arrival. There where two other motorhomes at the time but the pub was very busy. The staff very friendly and the pub very interesting.
On arrival we went into the bar area to book in, we met Graham the owner and head chef of the pub. He took us to our pitch and also showed us round the toilet block which is locked using a keypad code. The toilet block is split into two units each having a shower, toilet and sink in them, they were very clean and tidy but they didn't have a mirror in them (picky I know).
The field is generally flat but does have some lumps and bumps it had been raining earlier in the day but the grass was quite solid overall.
The field has 5 EHU Points and a separate pot wash area which was uncovered so in the rain you would get wet.
There were another 3 tents on the field when we were there.
The pub is very nice inside, decorated with old suits of armor and brass figures with a nice big open fire and the food is to die for, graham is a superb chef and the restaurant is a very busy place both in the afternoon and the evening so if you want to eat here you must book a table. We had a full meal of a starter, main and I had desert and it came to around £35 which for the quality of food we were served with, was very very good. I would consider driving the 26 miles to this place just for a meal alone.
12 of us in total with various tents including a kitchen tent and eating tent. We were only charged per person(£6) where some sites would have charged us per tent as well.
The Landlord and staff in the pub were very welcoming, providing us with good beer and good food and making the fact that the weather was awful (rain and more rain) seem trivial.
Toilet block is attached to the pub, but not a long walk to reach, though the rain made it seem longer.
When chatting to the Landlord on the day we were leaving we were informed that he is in the process of converting one of his out buildings into a camping barn, so we will be checking that out in the future.
We chose this place after checking a few others and this one won hands down.
Some people like lots of facilities and peace and quiet - I'm not bothered about the frills. The priority is the ambience and the people. Graham, the owner, is a top bloke and he runs a top hotel.
Me and a group of friends went for a weekend during some dreadful weather, and so the refuge of the pub was very welcome. Amazing place, steeped in history, and a very nice bar. Well stocked. Oh, and the food is brilliant too. Not cheap, but reasonable for freshly-cooked, well presented cuisine. You get what you pay for in life, I think.
Yes, it's right on a main A road, but so long as you accept that, and don't expect to get total silence, then you're not going to have a problem After 10pm the traffic drops significantly. I had no trouble sleeping at all.
There are two toilets, each with a keycode, and containing a shower cubicle. These were clean and well-kept.
The rare breeds farm is an attraction in itself. Beautiful creatures.
I'm quite sure we'll be back.
