3rd time back, I liked the pitch first time, so asked for the same pitch and got it, same o same o but its got everything we need. Not as many people this year, even better for us more room. Could do with lick of paint, but still very clean and friendly site,
Still lots to do when weather was bad ( if only you could bank on good weather ) A 30min drive to the nearest beach, and with Plymouth just down the road you don't feel like your in the middle of nowhere
A stunning site! Perfectly peaceful, with only the rushing of the water to disturb the rustling of the trees.
As you enter the site, the reception / shop / games / TV room is on your left. On your right is a large perfectly prepared lawn laid out with picnic tables. Continue towards the river and you arrive at the pitching areas.
The first pitching area is very approximately 200m x 80m level and well sheltered. The riverside pitches tend to be under trees; away from the river is in the open. Continue to the end through a gate and you are in a second much smaller area; again level and well sheltered. This is my favourite as it has a very cozy feel. Picnic tables are dotted about everwhere. There is free access to the river from both pitching areas, so families with children need to observe the obvious precautions.
There had been a considerable amount of rain during our visit, but the whole site remained solid and puddle free.
The wc / shower (free and substantially heated) facility is 6*, as is the pot washing / laundry facility opposite. No real problem, but these facilities are bit far from some of the pitches.
Dog friendly with a pleasant dog walking meadow just across from the entrance.
Buy your basics from the on-site shop; for everything else you need to go to Tavistock. Tavistock is a vey nice market town, but to get the best from it, go when the historic Pannier Market is open.
Two good eats & drinks pubs reasonably near. The Peter Tavy in Peter Tavy (Evening main courses £10 - £15) and the Trout & Tipple on the A386 towards Tavistock. ( Plymouth CAMRA Country Pub of the Year 2009)
Finally, a word of warning. There are many, many small lanes locally that are totally unsuitable for caravans. So I strongly advise not using your GPS in this area as primary navigation when towing. If you follow the GPS down one of these, you will not be happy I promise you.
Only downside is that riverside pitches are quite far away from the toilet/shower block.
Other than that, it was very clean, tidy and great size giving plenty of space.
The shower block was excellent - good hot showers with nice bench space to put all your things on and separate toilet area.
A very good idea to have another field for dog walking 'fouling' so they don't mess up in the camping field!
The unfortunate fact is you cannot walk off-road from the site to anywhere on foot as you need to negotiate very narrow lanes and its pretty dangerous!
The pub in the village serves food, but not till 6.00pm so don't turn up earlier expecting food. Eve menu was a bit limited, and was more of a winter menu than summer one. Also a bit pricey for a small local pub.
An excellent campsite in idyllic surroundings, brilliantly located in beautiful countryside and only ten minutes from charming Tavistock.
The toilet and shower block are very clean and modern enough with plenty of hot water.
Our second visit, this time bringing our family and friends with children along, lots to keep the kids happy although found it strange that even though the site was not that busy an odd couple deemed it necessary to camp very close to our village. Would recommend the site to all, especially families looking for a totally relaxing break.
A great site in a great location situated next to the beautiful River Tavy. The site is only a few minutes drive from Tavistock. The facilities are all ok, clean and tidy and we never experienced any queues for showers, toilets or sinks, the only minor complaint would be a lack of hot water at the busiest times.
We visited at the end of May and the site was very busy as you would expect. We had booked in advance to ensure a space. When we arrived we were told to find a spot and pitch, which we did. Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of choice and as a result we ended up pitched next to a group of 5 tents who had pitched together to make a 'village'. Although the site as a no noise after 11pm rule, the campers in the 'village' clearly thought this rule did not apply to them. On the third day I complained to staff in reception who were very apologetic and said they would have a word with them. To their credit they did so immediately. But to no avail, they turned the music off at 11pm but that was it
I would stay at this sight again, but would pay the extra and reserve one of their beautiful riverside pitches which seemed a little more spacious and quieter.
We passed through here on the Coast to Coast cycle route and stayed one night in our little tent. The owners weren't overly welcoming, although this was probably because we arrived late. There was a shed to put our bikes in which was good but it wasn't secure and we had to chain our bikes inside.
The site is beautiful, really picturesque by the river. It was Easter and quite a few families were there camping which was nice to see.
The showers were good, lots of hot water and clean.
The pub up the road in Peter Tavy was fantastic, I think it is the best pub meal I've had in Britain. We didn't book and had to wait for an hour until they had room, but the food was amazing and well worth the not so cheap price tag. The staff and patrons were all really friendly.
I think I'd come back to the campsite just to go to the pub again!
It's a beautiful setting in a valley on the edge of Dartmoor, bounded by the River Tavy and with the Tors looming in the distance.
The ground is well-drained and tidy and you can pitch pretty much where you want (riverside pitches excluded) which makes for a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere.
Lavatories, wash basins, showers and washing-up facilities are all excellent - clean and well-maintained.
Good points:
Lovely setting. I know of no better site to sit outside, drink some wine, listen to the river and watch the stars.
The Peter Tavy Inn is only a short distance away and the food is seriously good. Try the lamb shank - outstanding.
Dartmoor on your doorstep. The last wilderness in Southern England - enjoy.
Bad points (OK, only one!)
Other reviewers have mentioned that they like to fool around in the river.
Firstly, it is too shallow to actually swim in and the riverbed is rocks/gravel so not suitable for children.
Secondly, the site owner charges visitors to fish and it's not cheap. If I want to fish, I have to pay to do so. Conversely, if I want to throw stones or chuck my dogs / kids into the river, thus ruining the fishing, I can do so for no charge.
Overall an outstanding site and one that I will continue to visit (but sort out the river usage!).
2nd time back. Same field, same pitch facing the river loved the site, lots of space. Playground to entertain the little ones, lots to do in the area. Staff helpful. There was never a queue for showers even though the site was busy, also very clean including the washing up area. Only draw back, long walk to shower block and no lighting around the site or proper road for the cars to travel around the site.
In case of rain. Tavistock was just down the road with all that one would need (indoor swimming pool, Cinema/theatre, Tea Rooms, also cheap shoe/handbag shops for Girl/Ladies to shop till they drop! oh by the way some Fishing for the Boys!)And would recommed this site.
This site has five hardstandings for caravans suitable for all year round use. Each pitch has its own electricity hook-up (16amp), water supply, television booster and grey water disposal. Ideal for those who struggle with fetching and disposing of water.
Very well laid out site and very well maintained. Grass was trimmed, hedges cut and good facilities for recycling.
Toliet blocks were very clean, reasonably heated and plenty of room in the showers with flip up seats in the dry area. Ample hot water.
Good laundry and dishwashing facilities. Ample hot water.
Good recreation areas, playground, tennis court and BBQ area. Resident ducks are delightful, just stop when they are crossing the road.
We chose the site since they claimed to be disabled friendly and were not dissapointed. The disabled toliet and shower room was very generously sized with plenty of room for the wheelchair user and carer. The shower has a low level screen plus a curtain with level access and a good seat.
We camped on the top field because it was easy to get a wheelchair to the toilets and washing up facilities. The pitches were a generous size and even at the Bank Holiday weekend we were not cramped.
Highly recommended.
