We stayed at Longnor Wood for a week. We are walkers and also wanted to visit Buxton durng the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, which is well recommended. The Staff were very friendly and guests generally like-minded peace seeking couples, many I suspect, as repeat visitors to a site whose facilities are here well documented. The weather during our stay was abysmal with high winds and continual rain. The site stood up well in these conditions, the amenities remained dry and clean and, in the main, the ground drained well. We were in the lowest corner of the tent field (pitch 11) which was very sheltered from the wind but we did suffer from ingress of surface water through our breathable ground sheet as the rain persisted to saturation point. There are some lovely day walks based on Longnor which we managed to link to local paths, giving driving a break and keeping the car away from the pitch during the wettest period. We did not sample local hostelries as we tend to self-cater but would have been happy to have made further use of the local visiting butcher had evenings been fit to BBQ. Our wettest week in over forty successive years of camping but, thanks to Longnor Wood, we are not dissuaded for the future.
We stayed a weekend in a tent with friends in a camper van and had two pitches together in the lower site with the statics. We have never been anywhere with so many rules - which way to face, how far apart, even which side of the tent that the car had to go on which was off-putting. They also limit groups to two pitches (presumably to try and limit late night noise?).
There was an almost permanent smell of sewage in this lower field.
Also a word of warning for the light sleepers - we were kept awake all night, both nights, by some kind of nocturnal bird which made a call every 5 seconds from 10 pm till 4 am.
Site itself very peaceful, (apart from the unnecessary music piped into the toilet blocks) and no late night noise (birds apart). Large pitches, clean pleasant facilities with good attention to detail.
A good half hour walk from the village / pubs. The chef at the Black Grouse was off sick but the friendly landlady let us eat our fish and chips at the outside pub tables with our drinks.
Site has a visiting butcher on Saturday evenings and a catering van at other times.
This is indeed a very tranquil site. A place to relax big style as it is very quiet as has already been said.
The BIG news however is that the site now has fast WiFi which I am using to write this report. It uses the CaraWeb system and signal strength is good to excellent throughout the site. There are surf cards that you can buy from reception that give you various times online - from a one hour card that gives you an hour in total, so if you disconnect after 15 mins you still have 45 mins left to use next time which is good if all you want to do is check emails. Or there are 1 day, 3 day or 1 week cards which give you multiples of 24 hours from when you first log on.
Only problems I found so far is that the trees block satellite signals and only Orange phones work in this area so we have to drive up the road to get a signal if we need to use our phones.
If you need a quiet site to recover in - this is the one.
We had a thoroughly relaxing stay at Longnor. The site was peaceful, with excellent facilities and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Although the site was quite full we still felt quite secluded and not overrun (probably due to the absence of children).
The village of Longnor is very quiet, although a bit too quiet at times - especially when trying to find somewhere to eat on Sunday and Monday evening! On these occasions we were lucky to find hospitality at The Royal Oak in Hurlow, a few miles out of Longnor, where the food and beer were both outstanding. When open, the local chippy serves up great fare, if you don't mind waiting.
The location is very convenient for Buxton, Leek and Ashbourne, although the roads are rather zig-zaggy at times. It is also very close to Alton Towers, where good fun can be had by the bigger kids amongst us!
All in all, we had a great time and will certainly return.
We visited Longmor last week, and I can recommend this site. It is clean and quiet and the owners are very pleasant. The pitches are spacious and neat. There are very narrow lanes leading up to the site, but we did not have any problems and tow a 20ft caravan.
If you are a dog owner the dog walk is lovely and the views from there are fantastic. There are also a number of walks within a short drive.
There are 3 pubs in the village, but we found these very expensive and the food was not very good, so I would recommend if you want to eat out to go to one of the pubs around Longmor.
We have just had a lovely, peaceful weekend at Longnor.The facilities were spotless and the staff couldn't be more friendly. The rabbits and birds are all quite fearless (no children to chase them I suppose) and were a delight to watch. We had a walk into Longnor itself along the main road and then came back via a walk along the fields which was very pleasant. If we could criticise it in any way it would be that we were not told that there was a visiting butcher early on Saturday evenings so you could stock up on barbeque goods. We didn't find out until the following day, which was a shame because we would have used him!
Other than that we would thoroughly recommend the site.
Stayed here in the middle of June and I have to say that, for novice campers such as ourselves, it is a fantastic site. The staff are all very friendly, helpful and always on hand if you have a problem. Our only problem was that our airbed let us down and we could not stay longer. The site is fairly flat but the field we were in had no views. However, to wake up to the sound of Curlews calling was another experience. The walk into Longnor village is a bit further than we expected but apart from that everything was great. Will be back, hopefully, in a few weeks time.
Went here a couple of times last year and love it. The site is so peaceful - probably helped by being adults only. There is a small shop, and plenty of toliets and showers for size of the site. The owners of the site are very friendly.
The campsite is situated a couple of miles from the village - not to bad walking there but walking back could be a killer as uphill! But if you've got your walking boots and head on . . .You will be fine. Bakewell not a long car journey and well worth visiting even if just for the bakewell pudding!
You really feel at one with nature here - there are rabbits all around the site which is lovely, and all you can hear is the wind in the trees and the birds - wonderful!
Am revisiting in June and am sure will still love this site.
We spent 2 nights here in mid May and found it to be a good site in a fantastic location for walking in the Peak District. Facilities are very good, warm and clean toilet / shower blocks and a great washing up area where you can also freeze ice packs. The camping field is fairly flat and quite sheltered and the pitches are a good size. Lots of conveniently situated water points. Unfortunately there are no views from this field and you are asked to pitch 'facing in' so you are looking at all the other tents. It takes around 25 minutes to walk into Longnor (a little longer on the way back as its uphill!). We ate at the Black Grouse, formally the Crewe & Harpur, and the food and service were both excellent, would thoroughly recommend. Longnor also has a Village Shop which we found useful as the opening hours at the shop on site were a little limited. Overall a good site and the superb location would encourage a return visit.
Just wanted to say that this site is very nice and peaceful. We have stayed here twice now and on both occasions have been impressed. The owners have put a automatic barrier up which is a good idea, you have to pay a £5.00 deposit which you get back on depature. Also would like to point that the showers are top class nice touch with the piped music. The pitches are big enough for your caravan plus awing.Just make sure you have a good tv areial. All in all would recomend this site thanks alot we will be back.
This is an excellent site for touring and walking in the Peak District. Dog walking area just outside site. We have thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will be returning in September. Facilities good, including several showers, toilets and washing up. A microwave is available as are washing machine and dryer. Best of all it is high on a hill so even if it rains it isn't flooded. (GREAT "SUMMER" WEVE HAD). Longnor is nearly 2 miles away rather than the one and a quarter as in advert but 2 of the pubs are very dog friendly including allowed in whilst eating.(Not wine bar). Food served in Cheshire Cat very good. Bar meals in 1st pub from campsite ok. Steak night worth a trip.
This is a lovely site! It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is so peaceful. The booking in process went smoothly and we were shown to our pitch, which was very spacious. The site has a small shop, which I never used so am unable to comment on prices. They also have a small selection of leaflets and information on things to do in the area etc. There is a huge field put aside for dog walking and you get to see the most amazing views while taking an early morning/late evening stroll. The facilities are really well thought out. The toilet cubicles in the ladies also include sinks, which I think is a fantastic idea and more sites should do the same. There are also 3 showers and these are also a good size and I never experienced any queuing. Unfortunately though there was a strong smell of drains most of the time in the ladies, which did put me off using them. I did notice that they kept the windows and doors open a lot of the time, which did alleviate the smell, but they obviously have a problem with their drains. Music was piped into the toilet blocks throughout the day, which was a nice touch. The local village, Longnor, has some lovely pubs and a chip shop. Overall though this is a great site and I would not hesitate to recommend it.
Having two dogs who had never camped before, we wanted to choose somewhere not too far away from home (Nottingham), that we could try for one night. After seeing the reviews on here we chose Longnor.
All the positive points in the reviews were true for our short stay too. Very good facilities, great showers (I picked the busiest time in the morning to have a shower, and all three ladies showers were busy, but I was the only one in the queue after that, so didn’t have to wait long). They’ve had the great idea of having a washbasin in each toilet cubicle, making it a lot easier to brush teeth etc. It was a good mix of adults when we were there, couples and groups, and was lively but not too rowdy. The site miraculously went silent at 11pm, which was good. The site was fully booked during our stay, but even then the pitches are big enough that you don’t feel hemmed in. The facilities for dogs are good, a nice big field to let them off on, although it is next to the track into the site. It’s not at all a busy path for traffic, but something to bear in mind if you have an unruly dog! There is also a fair amount of woodland surrounding one edge of the park, which isn’t officially for use for dog walking, but a couple of people camping with their dogs told us they were using it. Having a dog who loves rabbits, I chose not to let him off again in there after losing him momentarily as he went running and creating in the woods after some of the wee beasties! The rabbits also freely graze on the site and don’t seem to notice you, which is nice to see, makes you feel properly in the countryside. The site is situated in a lovely area, a great base for access to all the Peak District has to offer, with amazing views from the tent field. My only small gripe was the welcome we got from the member of staff on duty. It wasn’t as friendly as the lady I spoke to on the phone. He was going to show me to the pitch, but was then asked a question by another camper, leaving me standing there for a good ten minutes, which I found to be a little rude. But hey, you can’t please everyone!
Overall the site is very good and we’re going back at the end of Sept, as the dogs were little angels and we all loved it!
As we are expecting our first baby, this summer is the last chance to have an adult only holiday and Longnor Wood gave us a great few days. Admittedly the sunny weather helped but still it remains that this is a great little, tranquil site.
On arrival we were personally shown to our pitch which was roomy, allowing us choice in how we arranged the tent and car etc. And it was flat – always a bonus!
There is a pitch and put green, badminton net, boules, sand pit, with equipment being free and available to all. The main building is not a long walk from any pitch and has a small shop, loos/showers and washing up area. This has 2 sinks with hot running water and was very clean. There is also a microwave and small freezer (for ice blocks only). The toilets looked new and each cubicle was very large with its own wash basin and mirror. Great for a private strip wash and getting changed. The showers were hot and free with good pressure. The cleanliness of the facilities was very good but if I’m clutching at straws there was a particular aroma in the ladies last thing at night and first thing in the morning. This was NOT a reflection of cleanliness but more of a drains smell and once the main door was hooked open each morning it seemed to clear quickly. My Husband reported that this issue was not apparent in the mens.
Longnor Village is 1 mile away with numerous pubs. We ate in the one that also has en suite accommodation (can’t remember the name) and the food was excellent. We also got a 10% discount once we mentioned that we were staying at Longnor Wood.
We would not hesitate in going back to this little site but the pending baby situation obviously hinders us somewhat! For a peaceful and tranquil few days away, this is the place. Oh and look out for the numerous rabbits that roam about – very cute!
I have just come back from a weekend away at Longnor Wood. Only my second foray into camping granted so I am hardly a worldly and experienced guide for any of the rest of you lovely ukcampsite regulars, however, I just had to tell you how absolutely wonderful the site was! It rained 2/3 of the time we were there (hardly their fault!) but despite the dreary weather the site still seemed to shine! The pitching sites are spread out in separate areas, rather than one large area giving you the added benefit of a mini community field, with only single rows of tents off the road on either side. (So you only had people on either side of you not behind you) There are a few outdoor games for the visitors to experience too including boules and badminton, a nicely stocked shop, a laundry room and two sinks for washing pots with a microwave and a freezer for your ice packs. But the most noteworthy has to be the friendly staff of course, and also the toilets! Sad I know being excited about loos, but heh, it wasn't just the loo but the whole ensemble! Loo-shower-sink! (Perhaps I got a little water in my brain this wet weekend to be so bathroom barmy!?) Each toilet cubicle has a sink in it allowing for some private hand washing, or in times of need a private strip wash! The showers are lovely 3 of them which served the campsite well, I felt - didn't have to queue myself! but in general they were impeccably clean and warm and inviting - nothing dodgy lurking anywhere! The site also allows dogs and has a dedicated dog walking area, which was wonderful! Good place to stretch the furry ones legs and allow for some well earned sniffing out of fellow campers ears! And of course another worthy note is the fact the park is adult only - nothing against the smaller members of society, I used to be one after all, but it was nice not to fall over them for the weekend and not to feel like my tent had become an object to hide behind etc etc! We walked into Longnor itself which was equally lovely! 1 and 1/4 miles each way and up hill on the way back! (and boy was I reminded how un fit I am!) we counted 4 pubs on the main square so plenty to chose from (after that tiring walk!) and the scenery is of course breath taking! All in all an excellent site, excellent location - well worth a look!
