On arrival site owners weren't on site so we were unsure of where to go, luckily the friendly cafe staff helped us out. Turned out they had been booked us in for the wrong week but luckily the week we went (the one we had really booked) was quiet and there was more than enough space for us to stay.
The site is easily found and on really beautiful grounds. We took our dog and the site was a nice short walk for her. There is also a public footpath opposite site where you could let your dog off the lead and leads to lots of different fields which is lovely.
There aren't many facilities on site really. The cafe serves nice food that is well priced and the staff are nice and friendly. The toilets are really dirty. I have been in cleaner public toilets if I'm honest. We were there for a week and the same dirt stayed on the floors and walls our entire stay there. Hot water takes a while to get going in the morning but is fine throughout the day. I suggest you take your own had soap as they only provide a bar of soap which is incredibly unhygienic.
Pub across the road serves really good food. Staff are friendly and welcoming and the whole pub has a nice friendly atmosphere. Dogs are welcome even when eating which we liked.
Oh Wow what a wonderful site. It is quiet, well maintained. From our pitch we overlooked the lake, which is teeming with wildlife. We saw a Kingfisher diving super! The owners are helpful and friendly. There is however only one toilet and shower each for men and women, but the block is kept clean. Fishing was not easy but it was raining most days. We caught carp, roach and bream. There are cat fish in the lake.
There is a Café in the park. There is a children's play area and room for children to play. We would go again.
We have visited this site twice now, it is always clean, the owners are always about during the day and the caravans are reasonably spaced apart. There are only one toilet and one shower each for men and women, could do with a spruce up but they are always clean. My husband enjoys the fishing. There is a cafe on site and a pub opposite with excellent food. Care should be taken entering and leaving site over a hump. There are supermarkets and shops five minutes drive from site. Overall a pleasant site.
Just got back from Lakeside after a lovely chilly Easter Weekend, the site is very clean and tidy, good caravan facilities(chemical waste ect) with a beautiful fishing lake and kids play area. Nicely laid out with plenty of electric hookup points and no problems getting in and out, there is a large speed bump upon entry to the site but we had no problem with grounding in or out as some have mentioned on here.
Superb on site cafe, reasonably priced and a lovely pub just opposite the site as well. Only 1 mile from Stowmarket and a nice dog walk just opposite the camp as well.
The only down point for us was the showers and toilet block. There is only 1 shower and loo in mens and womens, both showers with saloon style doors so no privacy, no hot water to wash hands or plates etc. and toilet block also had no heating at all so pretty cold and damp. A shame really as other than that a lovely site and would recommend.
We had a wonderful weekend here and found the owners to be very friendly.
The facilities are basic but functional and the fishing is superb at £5 a day. £16 pn for caravan with electric. The pub across the road does excellent homemade meals.
The site itself has a cafe serving full meals as well as light bites. There is a play area for the children making it popular with families.
If you are towing watch the exit from the site as there is a high risk of grounding the jockey wheel as we did.
We started looking for a May bank holiday site about four weeks ago, we required two adjacent pitches. After numerous negative responses Lakeside said they could accommodate us.
First impressions upon our arrival were all positive with a view of what we understood to be 25 level grassy pitches around a picturesque lake with all the necessary facilities on the perimeter, behind the pitches.
Looks can however be deceiving.
Our first disappointment was that our pitches were not side by side but end to end, certainly not what was expected.
It soon became apparent that the reason for our distress was that the site was overbooked and therefore overcrowded. On a site containing '25 Pitches' we counted 37 caravans, motorhomes and tents, not to mention the numerous fishermen camped around the lakeside.
Overcrowding does however tend to create other problems. As far as we were aware the site 'facilities' comprised, for males 1xshower, 1 x urinal, 1 x toilet and 2 x hand basins; with the same for females, excluding the urinal, with a 'locked' toilet provided for 'disabled use only'. I doubt if these facilities could cope the inhabitants of 25 pitches let alone 37 plus countless overnight fishermen
As a consequence the pressure exerted on the equipment eventually rendered the male toilet 'out of order'. The disabled toilet was opened up as a compromise but alas no water for hand-wash.
Still on the subject of water the sinks provided for dish washing were cold water only, no hot water taps let alone hot water.
One final grouse, the 'grey' water disposal point was inaccessible to motorhomes as a caravan was parked right alongside.
Its such a shame that the site had these problems because it has some great positives. The lake apart which is first class, just across the road is The Dog and Shepherd with real ale and great food with a cafe on site serving breakfasts and other meals at very reasonable prices.
Finally, and on a favourable note, the site is great for kids with a play area which includes a trampoline, a football area and of course the fishing lake.
Would we return? Yes we probably would if the '25' pitches were clearly defined and if the basic facilities were made fit for purpose.
On arrival we were given a warm welcome and as we had arrived on the Thursday before good Friday we had a choice of pitch, all of the pitches face the lake which is lovely, I think someone said it was two acres,
The lake is well stocked and is good fishing for the pleasure angler to the serious carp man, (a 17 and 21lb carp came out over night)
Plenty of variety with tench bream small carp up to 5 - 6lb with roach and rudd in abundance.
It is approx 1 mile from Stowmarket, which is lovely and has the usual brand supermarkets
As there is not a shop on site you will need to pay a visit.
The site is well looked after and there is a cafe on site called 'lakeside' this serves a variety of hot meals from a full English at a fiver to a lasagne and curry, it is VERY clean and well priced with good friendly service.
We ate there on the last day and it was very nice
There is a small play area for kids with a sunken trampoline, again a well maintained play area
The site itself has about 30 pitches, it is not noisy
Across the road is a pub called the 'Dog and Shepherd again friendly and serves good food.
The wash rooms have only one shower in the male cubicle and one in the female, although the site was busy you never had to queue however they did need a good clean and updating. It's a shame as this is the only downside to what is a nice site with (I think his name was Ron) running around all day keeping an eye on things Ron was very friendly and helpful.
Stayed here over Easter. The toilet block is clean and tidy but there was only cold water at the sinks. The fishermen use this toilet block to clean their boots etc even though there is another toilet block for their use near to the cafe. We would recommend that the owner put locks on the campers toilet block and only gave keys to the people who were camping there and had paid for the facilities.
This camp site is not cheap - 15 GBP per night! It is not a CL site as it looks like some caravans have been pitched here for a long time. Caravanners beware. There is a large ramp which is not such a problem when entering the site but on leaving there is a risk of grounding the caravan.
We would recommend the breakfast at the cafe and the pub opposite had lovely beer and food.
On a spur of the moment weekend we just opted to go somewhere fairly close and found ourselves at Lakeside in Onehouse. On first arrival we thought we had the wrong place, as there were no other tents or vans on site, but as it turned out, we had arrived, and there were motorhomes set up opposite the lake behind the cafe.
The site is a large grassy flat open area next to a large lake, seeing as there was no-one else around we pitched up at a decent looking swim to the back left of the lake as you first see it.
There is a cafe on site which you can get hot food at and drinks etc. The children's play area could do with some investment, but again, our kids (4&6) made the best of it, but as it also seems to be a local park area for non campers, there were others children that came with their parents to the cafe and that kept them occupied and happy enough running round.
The toilet facilities are minimal one block at the end of the grass pitch and a second block behind the Cafe. Clean but minimal, oh and at night, we either couldn't find the light switch or there wasn't power / lighting sufficient enough in the grassy field block, so took the longer walk to the block behind the cafe.
I was fishing and there were maybe at most 2 others fishing, given it was a nice wekend and was the last weekend of September I thought there would have been more. There was little action to be had on the float, just a few small roach, nothing prolific. Boilie brought in a PB 15lb mirror, so I went home happy.
All in all.A nice quiet site (when we went) and decent fishing. Would I go back. For the fishing yes, at a quieter time of year.Yes, at a busy time.Probably not for me, but I'm not one for crowds in general. Cheap and cheerful though and did the job.
This was the only place in Suffolk to have any spaces left to camp over the late Summer Bank Holiday. I was quoted £10 per night over the phone but when I arrived I was only charged £8 per night for three nights which was an absolute bargain considering some places were charging about £30 a night. This is predominantly a fishing venue and caravan park and there is a lovely fishing lake and a little river running around the edge of the site. We pitched our tent fairly near the road as we were advised by the owners that certain areas were due to have large groups and caravans. We had plenty of room as I was afraid we would be squashed in like sardines, nothing could have been further from the truth. My boyfriend was concerned that the road would be noisy but it was not a busy thoroughfare. There are two toilet blocks each with only one toilet each for male and female, although the larger toilet block housing the showers had a urinal for men too. There was one electric shower each for men and women, the gents was lovely apparently although the ladies only stayed on for about 5 seconds a time and was alternately scalding hot or freezing cold, I did check with other female campers and they had the same experience. This would appear to be a fault and I will be contacting the site to alert them to this. There is also a sink for washing your dishes outside with luke warm/ cold water. Considering that the camp site was very busy there were no long queues and everyone was very friendly and considerate. The site itself was lovely and lush, well trimmed and level. There were plenty of hook ups but we did not require this. There was a cafe on site and they were always very friendly, I didn't use it personally but I saw people eating there and the food looked nice, it opened at 9.30am each day and was open for breakfast and lunch and well into the afternoon. The pub opposite was very nice and the menu looked very tempting with some good hearty sounding dishes, again we didn't eat here as I love cooking outside but it looked very nice and the staff were friendly.
Stowmarket itself was a let down as it is not a very culturally interesting town but you are only 10 miles away from Bury St Edmunds and the Abbey ruins, cathedral, museums and excellent shopping centre. We took a day trip to Aldeburgh (about a 60 minute drive going thescenic route!) as there was a very lovely beach, mainly pebbles but a strip of sand. There's a Martello Tower which can be viewed by prior arrangement with the National Trust. The shopping centre here is a mix of interesting one off shops and chains such as Fat Face and Prezzo. There are two excellent chip shops here, apparently ranked among the best in the country. I queued at the longest and took about 30 minutes to get in and get my food and I wasn't disappointed although when I drove by at about 5pm there was no queue!
I would recommend The Lakeside Caravan park as it was well run and friendly and not over crowded nor vastly over priced. There are also some very nice public footpaths stretching out around the fields which are very nice to take a walk along. The caravan site is also animal friendly and there were people there with dogs. I highly recommend if you don't want to get ripped off by other sites or be packed in like tinned fish!
