I told my husband that I didn't fancy camping in a field that had basic facilities with our nearly two year old daughter. So he booked us in here! I'm not going to lie, initially I was a bit worried, and this increased when we were notified of the compost toilet and gas shower from a bucket. Yet I can honestly say that this has been the best couple of days camping in years!
We arrived late afternoon to find a gorgeous meadow full of buttercups (and errant piglet) which had the most amazing view across the valley towards the Black Mountains (Cribyn and Pen Y Fan). Lying in the bedroom looking out of the tent door towards the mountains was the best view I have ever experienced when camping. It was so dramatic and completely made up for the basic facilities, which were far better than I imagined.
The toilets (two) were tastefully decorated, interesting and clean. They won't be everyone's cup of tea and I'm not sure how they would cope with a full field of campers (there were only 3 tents when we camped). They have plenty of toilet roll, wood shavings with spade, a nice new clean seat and anti-bacterial wipes and hand sanitiser. The showers (two) were clean, warm, free, and had good water pressure.
There was a little sink with a mirror and shower curtains. There were plenty of hooks and shelves. I needed a hand from the hubby to bring the bucket in which holds enough water to wash hair and have a good shower, but not enough to shower our two year old at the same time.
The washing up sink was at the back of the showers. We camped in glorious sunny weather and the showers were quite refreshing. I'm not sure if I would enjoy them as much in the wind and rain as they are a little exposed under the feet with a basic cover over head.
The site also has 3 yurts and farm house accommodation which looked great (see website). There is a large barn area which has a great honesty shop with plenty of homemade produce (jams, chutneys, eggs etc) and the owners have been really thoughtful around things such as a large blackboard with the weather for the week, a games box, walks, treasure hunt sheets etc.
There is a daily tour of the farm at 7pm which includes feeding the piglets and petting the baby chicks and ducks which our daughter loved! The owner also asked if she wanted to name one of the chicks which was sweet. Piglet spotting around the tent was entertaining too.
The field has 10 pitches around the perimeter with a slight slope. There is a large campfire in the centre of the field which we didn't use as it really needs some marshmallows and someone who can play the guitar!
I would definitely camp here again, I'd spend longer and I'd bring friends. I very nearly didn't write this review as part of the appeal is the fact that it is a little known campsite but then the owners seemed really lovely and they deserve to be acknowledged.
I guess I'm hoping the compost toilets will put lots of people off and prevent it from being fully booked for the rest of the summer! This is camping at its very best.
