There are two sites almost next door to each other in the picture-postcard medieval
Village of Yvoire, about 15km west of Thonon Les Bains. We stayed on Mathieu II,which is the smaller and more basic of the two. You will need to speak at least a little French here, but c’est la vie. This site has only about a dozen touring pitches, but a lot of statics. The majority of these are immaculately kept with little private manicured gardens. The touring pitches are all slightly sloping but well demarcated in a separate very quiet grassed area. Sanitary facilities are very rudimentary on this site, but probably more modern on Mathieu I. Most of the WCs are continental, and the showers, although hot and very powerful, are vintage 1950. As with most continental sites there is a bit of a problem disposing of waste water – we Brits tend to use larger containers than do the Europeans and the usual solution is to use the chemical toilet disposal point – this can be quite high, so best not allow your tank to get too full. Alternatively the continental WCs can be used for this purpose.
The site really scores in its location only 5 minutes stroll from Yvoire village. This is a too-good-to be-true picturesque lakeside village, highly geared to tourism, but still very worth spending time in. Huge effort is made by the local community to present the village in best possible light – flowers are everywhere, and there is continuous cleaning, sweeping, pruning going on. The effect is a bit of a real-life Disney resort. Of course there are multiple eating opportunities, either in places along the village streets or along the lakeside, but prices are understandably high. You can catch a ferry here to Nyon on the Swiss side, or to various other lakeside towns in France and Switzerland. Some of the boats are beautifully maintained paddle steamers, with the smoothly and silently working pistons and drive shafts open to admire. If you or your kids can’t do without a beach, there is a huge sandy one at Exenevex, about 3km to the east. The sand is presumably imported but gives a very good impression of a real seaside beach. For your daily bread you will enjoy a pleasant stroll into Yvoire before the crowds arrive – the best time of day! There is a ‘depot du pain’ in a brasserie on one of the lanes leading down to the lake.
