If you are heading to Lake Garda in northern Italy (as so many Brits do) you might sensibly choose to cross over from Austria via the Resia/Reschen pass rather than the Brenner Pass - which is not as pretty and can be congested. If you take that advice you can nip into eastern Switzerland on road 27 just before you leave Austria. It's a level road in the Engadine valley and OK for a caravan - not a motorway so no need to pay for a vignette.
Road 27 goes on to St Moritz, but half way there (about 30km from the frontier) you reach a tiny village called Sur-En, with a tip top camp site down in the valley floor below you. It's remarkable that such a quality camp site should be in such an out of the way spot. It's open all the year round and well equipped for winter use by skiers, with a ski bus up to the slopes, and by walkers and nature lovers in spring and summer. There is a bar, a restaurant, a shop, and high quality facilities of all sorts. We pitched camp around the edge of a big open field (take a 50 metre electric cable), and our lasting memory is of campers coming back from the forest with wood for their evening fires which glowed all around as darkness fell. A rare thing nowadays when so many sites are so sanitised.
No other Brits there of course. They'd all rushed on to Lake Garda I suppose.
