Inchcailloch is one of the designated camping areas within the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park and it is purposely basic, as it's within a nature reserve. It's almost wild camping, really. You get there by boat (nearest service is from Balmaha), there's no running water, and only a compost toilet (which takes a bit of getting used to).
The camping area only allows a maximum of 12 campers at any one time, for a maximum of two nights. So it's great if you want to get away for an overnighter, are very self-sufficient, and aren't looking for much in the way of facilities on site. It's cheap (as you might hope) - £5 per adult per night. There are picnic tables with metal sections to place your barbecue on, and there's a central fire-pit - but you need to take your own firewood as you can't gather dead wood in the nature reserve because the insects need it to live in.
Unfortunately the weather let us down but we still enjoyed ourselves and imagine the island would be stunning in the sunshine as it is a lovely wee place to explore even in the rain. Popular with day trippers, scout groups and the like, but really quietens down after the last boat has gone.
Unless you have your own boat/canoe etc it's probably worth ringing the boatyard in Balmaha ahead of time to check that the boat is actually running. There is an alternative boat from Luss on the other side of the loch, but the last one leaves at 2. 45 pm so don't leave it too late to check!
There is a ranger on site from time to time and you can pick up a booklet which gives you lots of information about the island's history and what to see. We found the rangers and national park staff very pleasant and helpful to deal with.
We'd go back, hopefully in better weather next time. I've blogged our trip and will post a link in the trip reports section.
