Stayed here for one night, a Saturday in June, I was the only unit on site. It's a Caravan Certificated Location for members only.
Ok, first things first, on the Caravan Club site listing they say 'some aircraft noise'. This is somewhat of an understatement. The site is directly under the flight path for Luton Airport, and planes fly constantly directly over the pitches all day, every day. There are no night time flight restrictions at Luton unlike some other major airports, and I head flights until 1am, and according to one of the staff they start again at 3am. I didn't actually hear them until 6. 30 when the bright sunshine of a beautiful morning woke me. The site is only a few miles from the runway, so the planes are only a few hundred metres above you at this point. It's noisy. Very noisy.
Ok, that's cleared that up, I hope you are still reading as this site has plenty of positive things going for it, if you don't mind the planes.
It's set in a beautiful location in the grounds of a Sue Ryder care home, the stunning Stagenhoe mansion, built in 1740, which replaced earlier houses, with the estate history going back to 1246. Unfortunately you cannot look around the house, but the house and gardens are beautiful and provide a lovely backdrop to the pitches.
It's surrounded by open countryside, with a myriad of footpaths and bridleways, so if you're into walking you'll love it - footpaths lead directly from the site in all directions. I only had time to explore a few miles, but they were all safe to walk with the dog, although the estate does ask for them be on leads.
There's a lovely pub, the Strathmore Arms, which is an easy 20 minute walk, nearly all of it along a safe un-tarmacked track. Exit the site next to the toilet building, and turn left along the track - follow it as it swings around the house until you reach the top. Turn right, on the trackway, and keep walking up a very slight incline, until it levels and you see the lovely St Pauls Walden church on your left. Be careful here, as for the last few hundred metres it turns into a country lane, although rarely used as it only leads to a handful of houses. Follow the hill down, and you'll find the pub on the right. It's got plenty of real ales, and has a large pub garden. Dogs are welcome and they do food from Monday to Saturday ( not Sunday unfortunately at the time of writing )
Back to the site. The five pitches are beside the one way lane which services the carehome and carpark. As I mentioned above, they are in the old gardens, and surrounded by lovely mature trees, it really feels like you are camping in a country house parkland, which I suppose you are! Pitches are rather unlevel, and some a little tight, and if you have a large unit, or want to put up an awning you may struggle a little to get it looking right, but it's perfectly doable. Each pitch has an electric hookup point. There is a small brick built shed, which houses a toilet, sink with hot and cold water, and the elsan point. It's serviceable and clean, but don't expect luxury! Most vans which use this site use their own on board facilities anyway. There's also a fresh water tap.
The Caravan Club mentions an unfenced pond, but the only pond here is about 1 metre wide and in a raised plastic pond liner. There is a rather large, deep, and unfenced pit next to the road which contains the cesspit tank. There is also a fishing lake on the farmers fields, but this is a completely separate field well away from the campsite, and fenced off.
So to sum up, location wise this CL scores highly for it's surroundings, but obviously tempered by the fact it's under the flight path. Certainly recommended if you need a stop over in the area, and do not mind the plane noise.
