This is probably the most impressive environment we've camped in. Camping Atlantique Foret is a medium sized site set in a beautiful light natural forest of mature pines. Pitches can be in full sun, shade or a mix.
This is one of several sites near to the Cote Sauvage and represents one of the great features of camping in France - there's a suitable site for any taste wherever you go. If you want the great beaches, seaside towns or tourist centres but without the madness of all singing sites at peak season then I can heartily recommend finding a pitch here. Just up the road there are some big holiday village type sites with plenty going on.
The first thing you notice is that the pitches are in a non uniform arrangement. The site managers show all comers to their pitch and point out the exact extent of each, usually between and amongst trees. The pitches are large, quite open but there is a natural separation, which becomes obvious when you've stayed a day or two.
The site environment is beautiful and there is a feeling of space and openness. Rows of linear pitches and hedges can obviously produce lovely sites but this takes the camping environment to another level. If you like to spend a decent amount of time on site - reading, cooking or just taking it easy, then there can be no better place to stay. We've stayed on many sites far more expensive than here but few, if any, can match it for just being somewhere to relax. I reckon my blood pressure dropped considerably during our time here!
The site managers were always helpful though they could do with a bit more information re what's going on in the area. There are cycle paths all around and the Cote Sauvage is one huge sandy beach several miles long. La Tremblade is a working seaside town nearby with fantastic seafood, especially at the small places on the road opposite the oyster beds. Seafood caught in the morning and on a table accross the road at lunchtime. Cant be bad! la Palmyre is a biggish tourist centre with plenty going on for families.
There is no bar and the site shop doesn't really stock anything (when is a shop not a shop?) but decent shops for all essentials are a hundred yards up the road including a take away. A supermarket is five minutes drive in the direction of La Tremblade.
The site showers and toilets were good quality, very clean and never busy. Like most places the showers were in a separate block but here they are at the other end of the site from the main toilets. Unusual but not a problem. There was a wide range of units on site, though not many large caravans, with a small number of the sitesmobile homes placed at different points. Dutch and French campers were in the majority with a decent number of Brits around too.
The more natural environment may not be to everyone's tastes, especially if you're put off by uncut grass or similar (not that the grass was in any way unkempt), but if it is then you will love this place. We certainly do and we'll definitely be back.
This is a campsite equivalent of a budget airline - no frills - but we were quite content with that. The owners were very welcoming, and Jocelyn (or Fabienne) the manageress, speaks very good English which made me lazy! The pitches are open, not hedged in, and under a mix of deciduous and pine trees. Our pitch was at the rear of the site and was quite spacious. There are two facility blocks, but only one with showers, and a mix of toilets. Whilst we were there in early July, there was a problem with the boiler in the block nearest to us, which meant we werehed up in cold water but, it was fixed at the end of our time, and there was always hot water when we took a shower.
There isn't a pool but we cycled to the beach through the pine forest (about 4km). The beach stretches for miles and it's not hard to find a quiet spot. But watch the waves, it's not called the Cote Sauvage for nothing. There isn't a bar or shop on site, but they do have a 'depot du pain'and a freezer for ice-blocks (fee). The nearest shops are a short walk along the road to the next large campsite: general store, bakers and a take-away. There's also a large supermarket about 5-10 minutes drive away.
The charm of this site was the openness and lack of commercialism - although at times there was distant noise from the campsite disco along the road. I would stay there again as it was good value, in a lovely area, and we didn't feel hemmed in. But I don't want to spoil our memory and there are so many more places to visit.
