Access is frankly terrible. The vineyard is poorly signposted and a LONG way down an unmade road best suited for caterpillar tracks or a 4x4.
On arrival it's fine and a cute little shack with welcoming leaflets and local produce is there along with a means to summon the proprietors.
The views from the campsite are tremendous but exposed to the elements. Our dog was fascinated by the pig who came to visit alongside the hedge, Foraging for apples.
The site is run eco friendly with composting loos. Using laylandii clippings (which don't appear to rot). Perhaps sawdust might be better?
Freezer available and plenty of recycling.
The "nearby" village is practically unreachable on foot! The rocky lane is over half a mile walk before a dangerous 2-3 mile unlit, narrow lane into the village and pub. We dare not try it with our puppy.
The communal woodland firepit with hammocks was charming.
Dog walking field and vineyard were handy.
We won't return due to that access road and it's huge potholes, sorry. via mobile
Management response: Thank you for taking the time to review our campsite. I'm glad you enjoyed the views and the facilities here that you mention. The top of the campsite is an exposed spot with views to Dartmoor, and we always recommend guests in tents camp in the lower half if the weather is poor.
I'm sorry you had trouble finding us - it isn't a common problem, but we have put up more signs up on the approach road since your visit and we feel there are plenty of signs once you get onto the track.
Regarding the track itself, I agree it is long and uneven but I'm afraid we don't own it and are not responsible for its maintenance or permitted by the owner to maintain it ourselves.
We keep our short section at the end of the track (from where you turn towards our campsite) well-maintained but I'm afraid there is not much we can do about the rest of the track. There are a lot of heavy farm vehicles which disrupt the in-fill in the pot holes, so it is an ongoing job for our farmer neighbour, who owns it.
We ourselves own a regular car and not a 4 x 4 but always exercise caution and low speed when driving up and down the track. It is also the reason why we don't allow any motorhomes or towing vehicles on our site, as there are also few passing places.
As far as our compost loos are concerned, we use leylandii cuttings as it is a free resource for us and we would have to buy in sawdust. Initially, we also wondered whether the cuttings would break down. However, after ten years of using this system, I can assure you that after two years, it completely breaks down, so we are happy to continue with this eco-friendly method.
Most guests (as well as our own family) are regular walkers to Winkleigh village - a mile from our campsite. Half of the walk is along the aforementioned very quiet track, but I agree the second half along the lane can be busy at certain times of day. It is half a mile to the village on this lane. Cars do sometimes travel fast as it is national speed limit, and it is unlit and single track so it is always best to take a torch in the evening.
It's a shame you have decided not to return but I do appreciate that a long uneven access track is not for everyone. It's the price we pay for living in such a peaceful and beautiful part of Devon.
Perfect for tent camping with 2 bell tents also available to hire from the site. A real 'get away from it all' site right next to a beautiful vineyard with chickens and kune kune pigs. Basic facilities but that is what we love and we lasted a week no problem. Love the freedom and space. Separate field for the kids to run around in. The owners and their family are lovely and they keep a very close eye on things which we like. Short walk to the village for fish and chip van, local shop, pub and butchers. Right in the centre of Devon so plenty to visit but do allow the odd day just to chill on this site or local area.
A camp site on a vineyard! Make the most of the tour and wine tasting with the friendly owners. As previously mentioned, it is basic with a composting loo and shower, personally a bit too basic for us for any longer than a weekend. Easy walk into Winkleigh where there is a small shop, butchers, bakery and petrol station.
We spent 5 nights on here as a group of 8, 4 adults and 4 children, over the half term break.
If you want peace, tranquillity, fantastic views, good facilities, plenty of space to pitch and have fun and helpful and friendly owners then it doesn't get any better than this.
Don't go here if you expect clubhouses, tiny plots or even electricity. They have facilities to charge phones and freeze your iceblocks but no hook ups, just back to basics camping at it's best, complete with composting toilet, big skies and lungfulls of fresh air.
This is a very nice site, the only thing I would add to the previous review is that there is a lovely large field for the children to play in. We had a great time.
Field is only slightly sloping but wood/chocks are available by the water tap for leveling if you need them.
Long single track with few passing places, if you go in peak time I would send a walker ahead if you are pulling a van or you may have a difficult reverse on your hands!
10's across the board as we like quiet sites like this.
Set in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the Mendip Hills. There are 90 grass and hardstanding pitches some with hookup, for tents, caravans and motorhomes. The well laid out site has excellent shower and toilet facilities, including a family room, plus a laundry room and a well-stocked licensed shop selling local produce. Non members are welcome to book!
You can walk to the village of Priddy where you`ll find a popular pub serving food and the Priddy Good Farm Shop, selling a range of locally produced food. There are many attractions in this area of Somerset and the south west including Bath and Weston-super-Mare, and the site is ideally located, midway between Cheddar Gorge and Wells. Although its down a long stony track, its worth the diversion. The site itself is a single field in a working vineyard, with pigs, chickens and vines all around you. Really friendly couple and a lovely collie greet you. They have a lovely little shop selling their own and local wines, cider, apple juice, bottling and pressing equipment and a very cheap bag of logs. Facilities include a first-class compost toilet, shower, campfire place, chemical disposal point, free kindling and barbecue loan, mains water. There are lovely views towards Dartmoor and a nice hilltop breeze. Definitely worth a visit, the wine is lovely too. Fab people who are really friendly and happy to have a natter about wine, travel, the local area. Will definitely go back
