Reviewers - mature couple with campervan and bikes.
We were touring in this region, and chose this site from the ACSI book for a 1 night stay. The book description sounded attractive 'small, child friendly'. It also stated 'genuine campers will feel immediately at home'. We speculated on the way there on the meaning of genuine campers.
We followed the directions in the book, but missed a turning and ended up in the centre of Bagnols, a larger town than I expected, and not strictly where the campsite is situated. When we retraced our steps, the turning we needed was in the middle of some roadworks, between the town and a village.
After that, it was easy to find, but quite a way up a country lane. The situation is lovely, in a wooded area, and though on the edge of the river Ceze, it is set on a steep slope above.
The reception office is at the entrance, as is the bar, with a barrier to access the camping area. We met Jose, a friendly chatty man, though he did spend a lot of time telling us what a bargain we were getting with the ACSI discount.
We were invited to choose our own pitch. The camping area is delightful, mostly shady under trees, but the area at the top of the riverbank more open. The pitches are flat, and mainly grassy, divided by trees and shrubs. The grass had been mown, but patches left long with wild flowers. The pitches seem to vary in size and shape, so plenty of different ones to choose from.
The view from above the river is lovely, trees, birds, just a glimpse of the river below. However there is no fencing along the top, and it's a steep slope down, not very small child friendly.
At night, it was so quiet, just the sound of birds.
The sanitary block is large, seems to be a collection of 'add-on'. Washing up in the front section, then mixed areas with WC's, showers and basins all together. A newer area at the back, with disabled rooms, all locked up. Odd toilets and showers tucked in here and there. None of it was very clean, though the water was nice and hot.
All looked a bit tired.
The rest of the site had a feeling of neglect, the pool was empty and full of leaves, the playground area was shabby, and there were lots of things left lying around, such as tools, and a digger, that had obviously been there for some time. The bar area was uninviting. I know that the weather has been poor this year so far, but would have thought that it was even more important to be ready to start the season.
There is access to the riverside from a path at the back, we didn't go down as there had been heavy rain the night before and it looked a bit dodgy.
As the road had climbed quite a way from the village, and was narrow with some fast cars, we weren't tempted to cycle back in. However, we cycled the other way on the flat, and found some cycle routes. We also observed the other ACSI listed campsite just along from where we stayed. If we came this way again, I think I'd be tempted to try there instead, however the situation of both sites is not our preference, so would probably not return. And we thought it was poor value as a 16 euro ACSI site, even poorer at full price.
