This municipal site is superbly sited in the Marais Poitevin on the edge of a typical Marais village.
There are about forty pitches divided into two sectors … all are delineated by separating hedges, and most have mature trees providing shade. There is a small children’s playground with a slide and frame and a small fishing lake (not for swimming).
Cycle hire is available on site (1 hour for 7€, half a day 11€, day 15€ up to a week for 65€ …. Children’s range from 4. 50 to 55€ … towable small child trailers are available)
There is a Marais boat hire fifty metres from the campsite entrance hiring canoes/kayaks and the idiosyncratic Marias punt … a cross between a rowing boat and a punt, which can be poled or paddled.
The Campsite sells a combined ticket, bike and boat for 42€ (two people, 4 hours bike and 2 hours boat) or 37€ for two people (4 hours bike and 2 hours in a canoe).
The Services block is about eight years old and provides all the usual services, and is decently maintained and cleaned (bring your own paper).
There are three restaurants in the village within easy walking distance … all less than half a mile, the nearest being two hundred yards. Range from Pizzas and range of fastish dishes, to a decent, though pricier restaurant in the centre to a small, very French bar/restaurant.
WIFI is not available on site, but the tourist office in the town square provides a free service, which you can use seated at a table in the office, or sit outside in your car or on a bench.
A nearby hotel also has wifi … which you can pick up from the snack bar terrace just outside the campsite.
The Marais Poitevin … or Venise Vert, is an astonishing area … reclaimed from the sea by (originally) dutch engineers, and developed over a several hundred years … this is a veritable lacework of ‘canals’ … don’t think Midi canal … or indeed any standard man made canal … these vary in width from nothing more than a ditch, to some that are thirty metres wide. Most are bordered by trees and woods or fields … rich in flaura and fauna … In one three hour session in a kayak I paddled with many ducks, coots, swans, herons, an otter and lots of dragonflies etc. Sometimes you pass the ubiquitous biscuit coloured, handsome, cattle lazing under the trees as they munch away … it is very peaceful, and each bend in a canal, or joining with another, provides a new view.
The whole system is well signposted, and maps of the canals are available at the tourist office: 7€ … well worth having … if, you hire a boat, they will provide route maps for you. If you bring your own, there is a launching spot thirty metres from the campsite entrance.
There is also excellent fishing from the many canals and rivers.
The Marais also offers over 300 kms of cycle paths and routes … giving a different perspective from the water level, this is a wonderful area to explore … the cycle routes master map is available from the tourist office at 2. 50€ (good value) …. Or, if you speak to Francois at reception, he will provide maps of suggested routes, free.
Lots to explore by car, too … though you can’t get into all the little nooks and crannies that are accessible by bike and boat.
Coulon is like a mini Venice … not the culture, but the little bridges and the moored boats, and the traffic down the main course of the Sevre Niortaise. Some good eateries, too.
Many local villages are very pretty, and quite a few have their old ‘ports’ where boats were launched down cobbled slipways into a small basin.
There are eight major sections of the Marais … each with a ‘base’ village, and most have campsites … you could spend several years exploring it all!
I was here for a week … the sun shone throughout, except for one day with the odd shower.
This is a peaceful, surprising, and delightful corner of this wonderful country.
This is my third visit to the area. And it won't be the last!
