We have been to a lot of campsites over the years but this one has to rate as one of the best! It was set below a lovely village, was huge and incredibly quiet considering it was school holidays. We had a friendly welcome despite the staff not speaking much English and us not speaking much French. They even went off to find us some tape when we discovered a rip in out tent. We could choose to pitch anywhere and there was a lot of choice. The facilities were more than adequate and well-kept (but you need to take your own toilet paper as is true of many French sites). The surroundings were beautiful and we enjoyed watching the stars at night. You could order bread each day for the following morning and get a take away pizza from the bar 5 mins walk away. This village was ideally located for those, like us, who wanted to explore the Cantal on foot. Some spectacular walks nearby. We tried to book in advance but this was not necessary. We paid 14 Euros a night for two of us without electricity and therefore stayed for a very relaxing 6 nights. A definite 10 out of 10 in our opinion.
This is a truly lovely little site in a stunningly beautiful valley, situated on both sites of a little river and is really peaceful and calm.
The wardens are very friendly and take you round and show you the sannitaires, of which they are justly proud. Spotless and beautifully kept, the loos have loo paper in them! The showers are nice, although there aren't many of them.
There are laundry sinks as well as a washing machine and tumble drier, with a sheltered clothes line area. There is even a microwave you can use, free of charge!
There is a lovely and well maintained play area for little ones. Just outside the entrance there is a municipal tennis court.
We walked up the hill - accessible from the campsite - to go to the boulangerie in the village. There are also bars and hotels there as well as a pharmacie and a 'tardis' shop (tiny on the outside, huge inside), selling everything including local cheeses.
The wardens organise walks in the local area, and they have a barbecue once a week.
The area is so beautiful; we had a lovely walk to a waterfall through meadows with cows with bells on, and butterflies flitting all around.
The river when we were there was very shallow and some kids had made all sorts of dams and channels out of rocks - but you need water shoes and the water is very cold. We couldn't swim in it but there is a really nice municipal swimming pool not far up the road at Vic Sur Cere.
When we were there, there were a lot of storm clouds that built up at Clermont-Ferrand end of the valley, and every night we sat outside our van watching the most amazing light show as the sky lit up with sheet lightning.
I don't think I've ever given 10 out of 10 for everything before - but this site really deserves it.
And as if that wasn't enough, it has free wi-fi and it was very cheap. If we ever go back to the Cantal again I would definitely go back to this site.
