We were looking for a campsite between Burgos and Santander and couldn't find anything on the usual listings, but found this site by searching on the internet. The site is about 40miles from Santander. We made a quick phone call, and with broken Spanish and English understood that the site was open. We arrived after a lovely drive through the countryside to find we were the only people on the campsite, even the log chalets were empty! Please note when we stayed only cash was accepted but there is a cash machine very close by in the village. The man at reception was very friendly and helpful, and although no English was spoken we managed to get everything we wanted.

This is a very large site and think it is booked by a lot of outdoor activity groups. It was quite spooky being the only two people (and one dog) on the site, but felt very at ease there. The facilities, of which there were plenty, were spotlessly clean and although the block was unheated there was plenty of hot water for showers etc.

We had a lovely walk around the part of the lake and through the village which is quite quirky in that every seat, fence etc has a carved wooden animal/bird on it. The murals at either end of one building were quite spectacular. Along the edge of the lake near the town/village we found purpose built BBQ and picnic benches which we thought was a really clever idea.

We would like return in the warmer months to have further look around the area and perhaps try a few outdoor pursuits. Can imagine it would be fairly busy in the summer months.

On leaving this site follow the signs for Santander, which will take you through beautiful countryside although it has a very steep descent through the mountains.

We stayed for a couple of nights at this site as we toured round Northern Spain. A quite spot on the shores of a great lake.

The office staff were helpful but did not speak English, we were able to book in with a range of language words. The site is big and open with reasonable size pitches, there were few people on the site so the lack of trees or bushes was not an issue.

The shower and toilet block were modern, large and well maintained. In fact the site seemed ready to be able to cater for a lot more people than we saw using it. There is a small play park where the kids played on the flying fox. There is a bar on site and a shop, although the shop seemed to open at random times and was not overly stocked. So a ten minute walk to the village which had a small grocery seemed the best bet for bread and essentials.

The main attraction of the campsite is the lake, which is Ebro reservoir. Past the campsite is a sand spit which attracts a lot of visitors, but there is no overnight parking so clears of an evening. The campsite has its own beach and the sand spit creates a sheltered lake just for the campsite.

The local area is rural with small villages in a green landsacpe with rocky outcrops and has a rugged Dartmoor feel about it. We did not explore the local area but it seemed to have attractions for those who like the outdoor experience. As you come into Arija, you are greeted by an industrial works that does not prepare you for the the great views from the campsite. It did not affect our visit.

This was a pleasant place to spend some quite time by a lake.
