Florac is particularly well situated to visit the eastern end of the Tarn Gorge, though the whole of the Tarn and Jonte gorges are accessible. Although the gorge road between Millau and Florac is reasonably wide for most of the way, there are some narrow tricky bits and I wouldn’t really recommend it for large caravans - best approach from Ales or Mende on the N106.
We stayed at Camping Pont du Tarn, just a couple of hundred metres off the Florac by-pass. The site is mostly level and easily accessed with reasonable sized numbered pitches. Facilities are a little dated but adequate - the main block is a bit more modern but the layout is peculiar. Wifi is free, and although very unreliable at the pitch we were on usually worked well around reception. Bread doesn’t have to be ordered and is ok but but is not the best we have experienced. There is a small pool, which we didn’t use and a large sports/games area (which we didn’t use either!).
For shopping there is a Carrefour Market a few minutes away on the road into the centre. We also found the Bricolage a kilometre or two towards Mende very useful when some urgent running repairs were needed to our caravan - like a small B&Q but much tidier!
However your main reason for being here is surely to visit the magnificent gorges and maybe do some canoeing. In high season it seems best to reserve a canoe in advance as demand seems to be very high. We did the stretch from Ste Enimie to La Malene - great scenery and sufficiently interesting canoeing on mostly flat water or easy rapids. It took us about 2hrs 45m with no stops. We also picked up a ‘carnet’ of walking maps/guides at the Florac tourist office. If you do the Menhirs walk, be careful not to miss the turn off the track about 750 metres after Barague de l’Air! - the green way-marks are easy to miss. The Aven Armand cave is well worth a visit, particularly if you happen to have a day of poor weather. It certainly has the ‘wow factor! The N106 road both to the north and south of Florac is well-engineered, but has very long gradients and a few tight bends, particularly going north.
