On the whole a great campsite. Right next to the beach (although the fact their website had tidetables should have warned me that it is only good a few hours either side of high tide - and even then only good for very young children - shallow with no waves), best waterpark I have used in a campsite (expanded this year) and very friendly staff. We found some lovely hidden coves nearby that were not so affected by the tide.
There is nothing else around the area. It is in a little hamlet with one other campsite and another restaurant on the beach. Nearest large supermarket is 15 mins away in Herbignac (a Hyper U) or a smaller Carrefour in Penisten (5 mins drive)
Advertises itself as a family quiet campsite and when you check in there are notices saying 'silence after 10pm'. In reality there is not silence after 10pm - and because that is so early, people then don't know when to really be quiet. That said, they do go round and enforce it after about 11pm.
There was much more turned over to statics than the layout map showed, so camping is much less than 50% now and this may reflect the neglect in the upper toilet block - not what I would expect on a 4* site, but if we could be bothered to walk to the newer block - that was the best I have ever seen - so if you want to use that, make sure you are in a pitch near the beach. (the downside of those pitches is you might end up with one right on the main entrance road which was always noisy from kids and the pool area)
I also found the lack of basic camping facilities annoying. The only chemical disposal was in the motorhome service area, opposite end from our pitch, I could not find any taps for water so ended up filling the aquaroll from a washing up sink and it was very unclear where to put your grey water, but in the end I used what looked like a toilet emptying point (but wasn't) in the toilet block.
Restaurant menu wasn't very varied (pizza, moules and burgers), but was nicely cooked and good value.
The pitches were of variable size. The smallest one I think I have had in france, I paced it out to be 10x6m, there were some smaller and some bigger, but as we had booked 2 pitches next to each other I knew there was no chance of moving - but with the folding camper, awning and a car, there was not much space left over. Pitches were slightly sloping and some were under shade. The website says no washing lines to be tied to trees, but everyone did.
The site did seem to attract very large extended French families who fitted an amazing amount of tents/gazeboes/caravans and cars onto a single pitch and I was worried about the noise, but generally they were quiet by a suitable time. It was mainly French, a very small smattering of brits/dutch and the odd German.
So in Summary:
Pros:
Location - beach and easy drive from French ports
Water park - our boy made sure we went every day
New toilet block
Enforcement of noise
Cons:
Small Pitches IMHO
Old Toilet Block
Camping facilities taking 2nd place to statics
Low tide on the beach.
Attracts large French family groups who can be noisy
This is quite an amazing site. We stayed here for 6 nights and really enjoyed it.
The site is located right next to the beach. The beach is favoured by kite surrfers as it is very flat. If you want breaking waves, this is not for you. When the tide goes out, it goes out a long way. But the beach is very clean and safe. There is a kite surfing school here.
The water park has been recently extended and is pretty amazing. Our kids were kept entertained for hours here. There are two sets of water slides into heated pools and an inside pool which on warm days opens up to join the others. As with all these pools they are not supervised and they can get quite crowded so worth keeping an eye on younger children.
There are two shower blocks. The old one is pretty basic, loads of hot water, none of those irritating push button controls that you need to keep pressing. They were cleaned once a day and were fine. Note: they don't provide toilet roll in these loos.
The second shower block is new (2013) and is possibly the most amazing shower block I've ever seen. Immaculately clean, with cubicles that have a mixture of basins and toilets, or showers and toilets, or even all three. There are two family shower rooms that have a loo, basin and two showers, with adjustable height shower heads, perfect for little kids. They are very popular so expect to wait or pick your time to go when it's quiet. (and they have toilet paper). They have specific showers and toilets for kids and even a three height wash basin stand.
The pitches are divided by trees and hedging but are quite tightly packed. The grass is quite patchy and worn and the ground like concrete, so bring a big mallet. Mostly french visitors with lots of Dutch too. There were a few groups of kids roaming around at night but after 10pm it is very quiet. They have security guards patrolling at night and did ask our neighbours to be silent one night.
There is a simple bar and restaurant which does not bad pizzas, and they bake bread on site too so you don't need to pre-order.
There is a security gate where you get a pin code to get in and out, but be aware, you can't arrive too late as the office closes and you won't be able to register and get in.
Overall it was a great site, with some great facilities and if you like kite surfing, this is for you.
Happy camping
