OH and I had a 2 nights stay at this wonderful little campsite just behind the dike at the north side of the river Elbe, about 50 kilometres northwest of Hamburg.
The good experience started already in the phone, when my reservation was met in such a friendly and welcoming stile.
When we arrived at the place, the owner couple wasn't there, but a 'permanent' campist had the job of welcoming us, and showed us a nice sheltered pitch in the corner of one of two tent areas. We didn't use EHU, otherwise we should have used one of the caravan pitches.
Be aware that you pay for your stay on arrival (which we are not used to from Denmark). This seems to be usual in Germany - maybe bad experience? You don't pay much, and get a very good and relaxing experience for the money.
When the owners were back at the place, and we popped into the tiny office to say hello, we had forgotten our money at the car. Later in the evening the owner came round to collect the money, and surprised us by addressing us in a beautiful Swedish. He had been in Sweden decades ago and loves to train his Swedish everytime a Scandinavian campist arrives! The owner couple are such lovely people, and have a lot of tips for what to see in the surroundings.
The campsite is formed from only two rows of pitches, following the line of the dike. The site is very wellkept. There are lots of sheep on the dike, providing the campist with ample entertainment, especially when you pass through one of the gates and climb onto the dike. Be prepared to be searched for old bread by sheep if you sit down on the bench! There is a wonderful view over the pastures and the river from there, and lots to see for 'ship spotters'. The sunsets seen from the dike were wonderful.
In the middle of the campsite is the new toilet and shower building, with sinks for dishwashing under a roof on the outside of the building. The toilets and showers are the cleanest I've ever seen on a campsite! For the ladies there are only two showers, hidden behind one curtain, so if there is a queue you might need to be social. I forgot to ask OH, but I think there is a similar arrangement for the gentlemen. There also is a handicap toilet with shower, so you could chose that for more privacy.
There is a little sale of beer and soft drinks when the office is open, and in the weekend you can order 'biologisch-dynamische' homemade buns, who are brought to the site by a lady who also sells luxury jams and marmalades. Not cheap, and we tried the buns only one morning and decided that 'biologisch-dynamisch' obviously wasn't to our taste, but if you want to try what healthy and environmentally conscious Germans eat, have a try.
The village of Kollmar is within walking distance (along or on the dike). There is a tiny road going ther too. There is a butcher with a little sale of grocery and bakery, a restaurant, a café, a hotel, and some hotdog- and beer stands at the tiny harbour (at least in the tourist season). Near the harbour is a little sandy beach, romantically shaded by willows. You are so close to the North Sea, that the tide effects the Elbe, so you have to be aware of that, if you don't want to paddle in mud instead of the flood water (which seems to be so clean here that we saw several people bathing).
The nearest town is Glückstadt, built by Danes and Dutch 350 years ago and very romantic. There is a car ferry to the southern side of the Elbe. Hamburg is less than an hours drive away, and the North Sea marshland, which is a national park, is also within reach. I can also recommend the locks at the western end of the Kiel Canal at Brunsbüttel.
For a couple like us who loves a quiet and relaxed break and enjoying the beautiful landscape and the culture, it is a wonderful place.
For children there is a little playground at the site near the toilet buildings. We saw several families with kids in different ages who certainly didn't look bored, but if your Kids are used to campsite entertainment, swimming pools and that kind of things, it might not be the right place.
For us it was the perfect place, so we will certainly come back, and I give the site 10 points!
