Our stay at this campsite was mixed. Firstly, I would say that the description of the site on here is inaccurate. I suspect that it's just been lifted from the sister site - Pop Up By The River.
Pop Up In The Wood is a relatively new site and not yet fully developed. To put the record straight, the site has the following facilities:
- 1 Calor Gas powered shower
- 1 festival style toilet (with toilet roll but no anti-bacterial liquid or washbasin)
- 1 drinking water tap (no sink, just a standpipe)
- 1 chemical disposal unit and tap (non drinking water)
You can pitch anywhere you like and with only 5 pitches taken, we had ample room. We arrived late afternoon and you have to phone the farmer when you arrive to check in. Pitches are flat and can be had in the open field or under trees. The lack of facilities wasn't really an issue for us as there weren't many other campers and we were looking for a simple setup. The farmer is working on building a couple of drop loos so expect the facilities to improve over time. Also, the site states that you can purchase charcoal. This is not the case. You can hire a grill to go over your fire and you can purchase logs. However, you need to bring your own charcoal, kindling and firelighters.
A bonus of the site was that there was no traffic noise. The campsite is off a small lane and very peaceful in that respect. You can also walk to the pub across a couple of fields and through a wood.
Now for the downsides. The first night, we had a group of teenagers on the site. They were slightly noisy, but considerate enough to build their fire away from their tent. This meant that the noise didn't carry too much. However, the next morning whilst queuing for the shower, one of them decided to whip out his willy and pee in full view of me. I don't think he even noticed I was there and was clearly trying to create a reaction from the girls in the group. When we returned from walking later that day, the girls had left the toilet in a bit of a state. There was loo roll and tampon applicators strewn around. Fortunately, the group only stayed one night.
After that, we thought it would get better. There was a whiff of dope in the late afternoon, but that soon disappeared when the sight of the farmer's car bringing the logs came into view! However, later that night, music started up from another tent and got louder and louder. It went on until 3 am in the morning, meaning we slept really badly.
I think this campsite has a lot of potential, but the Pop Up guys need to establish some rules. It felt like a bit of a free for all and I'll be more careful in future to select sites that have a noise curfew and ban young groups. At present, I would recommend the site for those wanting a back to basics experience who don't mind groups and noise. However, if you want a peaceful time of it, it's probably not for you.
