Leon campsite is up on a hill to the east of the city centre, around 8 km/ 5 miles from Leon station. This is a hard climb at the end of a long day cycling! You are aiming for the 5th of the tall radio masts, which is the end of climbing before you go down to the site. The views north to the mountains are impressive.
The site is in a wood and the backpacker pitches are small flat platforms between the big pine trees, which is very nice. Other pitches for motorhomes with electricity are scattered around the site, which makes a nice change from ranks of pitches on a flat field. There is a newish housing estate nearby, but there was no noise to bother us.
All facilities are in a big central building which I would guess is 1960s/70s and has no disabled access, very poor in 2026. There are lots of steps. This also incorporates the owner's flat. The toilets and showers are in a good condition but with one issue, the light timer which goes off after about 3 minutes, so if you have a shower, make sure you go whilst it's still light!
The cafe & restaurant acts as reception, staffed by the owner's English speaking daughter. It is also open as a restaurant 19:00-21:00, but that doesn't mean you can get food at 20:30! I saw a Spanish couple being turned away. Also when I sat in there having a coffee after 20:00 it became very clear the owner wanted me out so he could close up, which was annoying (and his daughter was clearly embarrassed about. ) So if you want a meal, turn up at 19:00 sharp and don't linger over dinner!
There is a swimming pool, but it was not clear if this is actually open as it looked disused, but that could simply be it was waiting for a clean later in the season.
I cycled into Leon using a dirt track route via Las Lomas. This is quite steep and probably best avoided when cycling with full panniers. The day I departed I used the road route via Puente castro which is also the route of the Camino de Santiago. I recommend you follow the pilgrim route over the old river bridge, not the main road, as there is no cycle path on the road bridge and the road is narrow and busy.
There is a Mercadona supermarket just into Leon after the Puente castro bridge. It's about 30 mins cycle into the city centre. You are looking at around 90 mins to walk from the station to the site. There is a bus to Puente castro, which would shorten the walk.
Think the closing date might have changed as we were there towards the end of September.
Wooded site on the outskirts of Leon.
Ok facilities with hot water.
There’s a bar café with a limited selection of meals.
While it states that that the campsite is 3km from Leon think it’s an understatement.
We used a taxi which worked out about £30 for the two ways. Leon is a gem of a city to visit and at 5euro pp the 30 minute land train ride with commentary well worth taking.
