The site did not reply to our booking query but we went anyway as we needed a site not too far from Bilbao for ferry.
The site was VERY busy but fortunately we got a pitch for the night. The site is indeed right at the beach with a sandy walk along the estuary in both directions.
Toilets and showers were modern and very clean though for the numbers on site there could have been more.
Hooking up (and off) electric requires going to reception and asking someone to accompany you back to your pitch to unlock the box which could be inconvenient in the rain or if trying to leave quickly.
Travel to ferry the next day was easy, about 45 minutes. via mobile
Level pitch had 6A/10 EHU (locked) and washing up sink. Approach to site is down a dusty lane, past busy riding stables. Beware of young children on dwarf ponies being led along road.
Staff very friendly and site facilities good. Showers excellent and very well maintained. Good cheap restaurant and shop.
Unfortunately we were given a corner pitch close (we found out too late) to recycling bins. The pitch was on possibly the busiest intersection on the site and there was a constant cocophony of noise from fellow campers, vehicles, dustbins being dragged, dumper truck (emptying skips) and the odd emergency vehicle from the local hospital. Our pitch was regularly treated as a thoroughfare by other campers.
The above experiences, combined with the minimal attractions of the distant town of Laredo, and despite it's excellent beach decided us on leaving early to spend the last few days of our holiday in a more peaceful location.
We stayed here for a couple of nights after taking the ferry to Santander. It was an excellent choice for this. The site is slightly away from the town of Laredo, but you can easily walk to the outskirts where there are a few bars & restaurants. The centre of town is a bike ride or drive away. It is worth cycling there down the promenade along the amazing main town beach. The site itself is on the estuary and also has a lovely sandy beach. I did see a couple of people swimming in the estuary, but most people on the shore were on horses (from the amazing riding centre close by) or walking dogs. You could walk for miles along the shore if you wanted and the surrounding scenery was stunning, especially in the evening – one of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen! The town centre of Laredo is worth a visit, but the rest of the town is just huge blocks of flats and extremely ugly! Thankfully you can’t see the town from the site.
All of the staff at the site were very helpful and friendly, especially considering my almost total lack of Spanish. There is a small supermarket and a bar / café serving very tasty pizzas which we had on the first evening. There was one of the strongest wifi signal I’ve ever had on a campsite at our pitch – however, we were quite close to Reception, it may not be so good further away I suppose. The showers and toilets were perfect, modern and very clean – I wish all campsite facilities were this good! There appeared to be some activities on offer (a paddleboard competition was going on when we arrived), but we didn’t get involved and so can’t comment on them.
The pitches had plenty of space and were very flat. Each pitch has its own sink which was a bit of a novelty and very convenient. A lot of the pitches appeared to be seasonal pitches, complete with caravans, huge awnings and kitchen tents, but there was enough of a mix that we didn’t feel out of place with our tent. It was quite noisy the first night we were there, but far more peaceful the following night.
We would definitely use this site again for a stop-over from the ferry. It would also make a good base for exploring the area.
