This is a great little site to chill out and absorb the view. Wern Ddu is situated along a fairly steep-sided valley, and the view is of the opposite hillside! OK, won't suit everyone (thankfully) but this area has the timeless charm of ancient pastoral fields bounded by hedges of native deciduous trees, which makes us stop, sigh, and maybe pour a glass of wine.
Phone signal is a bit sketchy, reminding us of our device addiction and nudging us to just gaze at the sheep, or watch the horse in the next field, or listen to the birds. The song throughsh is wonderful. Trump? Who's Trump?
Access is a bit tricky, the last mile or so single-track with passing places, but smaller vans will be fine. There's no toilet block or showers, just CDP, so you need your own facilities.
The five pitches are all hard standing and all with EHU. They're pretty level, but we used blocks to get perfect. There's a decent space of grass between the pitches. There is (of course) drinking water, with a good length of hose so you can fill up on the way in without getting your own hose out. Grey water is emptied behind the fence into the long grass.
The whole place has a relaxed feel. We came in June 2023, and there was one other van there for a night, then we were alone. This year, 2025, also in June, we had the site to ourselves all four nights (apart from a lady attending to the horse). The owners are certainly not the intrusive type, but keep the site well maintained.
There are some good walks around here if you can find them, but some of the local farmers don't seem keen to allow access to public footpaths. One led to a hedge that ought to be open, but was too overgrown to pass. Another, along a wide track, had a gate with a combination lock on it - rather than walk the 3 miles back, we climbed over. It's also very hilly.
Another option is walking along the roads, which is fine and flatter, but narrow. It's about a mile to Penybontfawr, where there's a little post office with shop, and a pub.
Spacious, flat, hardstanding plots with hookups overlooking spectacular valley. Secure and large dog walking field directly behind, complete with bottle opener on the bench at the top of the field! Dogs very welcome. Water and waste facilities easy to access. 2-bedroomed holiday let also on site.
The lane is very quiet, narrow in places but quite good visibility and reasonable passing places. Local pubs and villages very friendly. Good for visiting Bala and Snowdonia as well as Lake Vyrnwy.

An excellent site, good pitches we got exactly what we would expect. Friendly and helpful site owners. Highly recommend. Fantastic views to wake up to. Good access to local areas of interest, Lake Vrynwy is a short drive and Oswestry is interesting.
This lovely CS, which was established last year, has five level and well-spaced hard-standings with ehus, all looking out across the valley with a lovely view. The water point, loo disposal, and recycling bins are immediately available at one end of the site. Access off the fairly narrow valley road is good with a wide entrance gate through a concrete yard. There is a large sloping field immediately behind the site, which can be used for dog walking. Care should be taken in driving the last mile to the site from Penybontfawr as part of the road is effectively single track with passing places.
This a very attractive area of Mid-Wales, which is much less visited than it deserves (thankfully!). Lake Vrynwy is a short drive away and there are many walks and cycle routes in the area. There is a small shop and post office in Penybontfawr and an excellent Spar supermarket 6 miles away in Llanfyllin. For a really excellent meal out, try the SEEDS restaurant in Llanfyllin (open Thursdays to Sundays only).
