Probably the friendliest campsite we have stopped in
Ok first let me set the scene following yet another tow car breakdown on route to Alsace we had to find a good site not far from the garage we were dropped at. With little research possible on dodgy roaming data signal we found this site, Mont Noir camping just a 5 minute walk from the Belgium border.
The location, it's just a short run from Dunkirk and in a quite quiet region of France access into the site is gate controlled and wide enough for most outfits. However inside the roads are quite narrow and the site is primarily based on chalets and little mobile homes, privately owned and well tended to, the pitches vary in size and shape quite dramatically. It looks like it is a site with more motorhome usage than caravans. If you have a big outfit, like ours 7. 4m van, then you will need a motor mover with some oomph to get onto the pitch. We had water, grey drainage and 10 amp electric and were charged 172 € for 8 nights from 5th july, in my book that's pretty good value.
Amenities and services - we were sited right next to the shower block behind the pool, by our request, the sanitaire were all clean and well maintained, just remember to take your own toilet roll, as it's mostly chalets the usage of the toilet blocks was minimal by others so it wasn't like you had people coming and going all day and night. The block near us contained 2 toilets, 2 showers, 2 sinks, baby change table, washup sinks and a laundry room. The only point to note about them is the showers are VERY hot to the point of being unusable to someone like myself who has very cool showers.
The pool area has a fair size pool that was a comfortable temperature, there is a hot tub and good shower and toilet facilities for the pool. Adjacent to the pool is the bar which although not busy when we were there stocked a good range and was priced very fairly. In the bar were a nice range of games and things to for kids and teens to go on. Out the back of the bar are 4 Petanque courts, there are some well weathered boules you can use if you don’t have your own.
There is WiFi however we did have issues getting connections on it. Around the site there are several kids play areas and the grounds are well looked after.
In the local area, about 15 minute drive away is a Lidl and E. Leclerc which will meet most of your shopping needs and just 30 minutes away is an Auchan which is Huge even on Auchan scale and this really does have everything, and some, under one roof.
Turn right out of the carpark and 2 minutes down the road is the Belgian border, we couldn’t find a name for the area however the border runs down the middle of the road, on one side is typically french with restaurants and a department store and on the other is Tobacconists and spirit retailers who have a MASSIVE range of ‘Stuff’ the shopfronts are tiny but they go way back and cover multiple floors so make sure you go inside and check them out. They seem to expect people at the weekend as parking is charged then but free during the week, however we did price check the Belgian beers thinking they would be better from Belgium, we were wrong get them from Auchan, they are loads cheaper
One resounding point that has to be highlighted is how friendly both the staff and the residents are on this site, we have been to many French sites and these people really stood out.
The all important question would we go back, Yes, the site and area are very nice however, once you have done all the tourist “stuff” you may struggle to find things to do other than sit around the pool and play petanque.
