We liked: the location which was convenient to places we wanted to visit
We did not like: the pitch sizes which were far too small for a campervan with awning, meaning we had to set up the awning sideways with the campervan parked in front, blocking the view. The medium sized tent on the next pitch had to reach over into our pitch to peg their ropes.
The toilet blocks were rustic and some distance from the pitches (as we found when when they were needed at night!). They were not cleaned daily. The nearby road was noisy.
There was nowhere to walk the dog safely.
This was the most expensive and least liked campsite on our month's tour of Scotland - certainly not value for money.
I stayed at Balkenna Caravan Park near Girvan, Ayrshire, in my motorhome for a couple of nights. It’s a small site, about 1. 5 acres, just off the A77, which makes it easy to find but comes with some road noise, especially during busier hours.
Getting in off the A77 was straightforward, but the site shares space with the tearoom’s car park, so maneuvering a larger motorhome felt a bit tight at times. There are 15 pitches for motorhomes, with electric hook-ups that worked fine for our needs. Some pitches weren’t quite level, so we needed levelling blocks.
The facilities are basic but do the job. The toilets and showers were clean, though one shower had a big step that could be tricky for anyone with mobility issues.
The on-site tearoom was handy for grabbing a coffee or a meal, so we didn’t always have to cook in the motorhome. It’s nothing fancy, but the food was decent, and the staff were polite. A fridge or freezer for ice blocks would’ve been useful, but we managed without.
The site’s close to Turnberry Beach, about a five-minute walk, which was good for a quick wander. You can see Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran from the site, which is nice if you catch a clear day. Girvan’s about a mile away for supplies, and the Ayrshire Coastal Path is nearby if you’re into walking. Trump Turnberry’s close too, if golf’s your thing.
Dogs are allowed, which worked for us since we had ours along.
There’s a fenced play area for kids, but it’s near the road, so you’d want to keep an eye on younger ones.
Overall: Balkenna’s a decent stop for motorhome campers. It’s got the basics—hook-ups, clean facilities, and a good location for the beach or exploring Ayrshire.
Ideal location for Girvan, Ailsa Craig, Turnberry &!Ayr.
