We chose this site because we wanted to visit the Auvergne region, and were not disappointed either in the site or the area, though it will take several more visits to get to know this huge region. We took the D7 from junction 30 on the A89, but would probably have been better going via Courpiere/D45 as the D7 is mostly very narrow and winding.
The site is quite small, with maybe 20 or so touring pitches and a dozen statics. At the end of July it was very quiet with no more than 8 pitches of both types occupied. Touring pitches were large, flat and hedged and were on two terraces. The upper terrace was close to the adjacent road, which was quite noisy during the day, particularly early morning and evening, but quiet at night. The sanitaire block was small but adequate for the number of pitches, with hot and powerful showers. Surprisingly the washing machine was free, despite having a coin slot. The only working water point was in the sanitaire, which made filling our barrel difficult - the lessen is to do as the continentals do and use a lot less water at the caravan than we tend to do in UK.
There is a bar and restaurant/takeaway on site, which was also popular with local people from off-site. Although not particularly pizza fans, we enjoyed the ones here, but made the mistake of ordering the mediums - small would have been plenty. The owner/waitress and some other diners were greatly amused by my appaling French when I asked for pizza a emprunter (borrow) rather than a emporter (take away). Won't make that mistake again! The site has a small swimming pool, which seemed very popular with the families there.
A curious incident occurred one night, when my wife was bitten (not stung) by a spider. Its fangs left two puncture marks on her finger, which remained swollen and quite painful for several weeks. We are not sure what kind of spider it was but suspicion falls on Recluse or False Widow. It was entirely coincidental that this happened at Grun de Chignor - we had probably been hosting the beast for days!
For basic provisions there is a very nice boulangerie and small Proxi epicerie in Vollore-ville, a couple of Kms down the road, and more exstensive shopping in Courpiere about 12km away.
We did a number of very pleasant and relatively easy hikes in the area following reasonably well-waymarked paths using a pack of maps we bought on the site. Recommended! A very easy family- friendly one took us around the very popular lake at Aubusson. Lots of water leisure activities here.
We recommend you try this very-little visited by Brits area of France, and Grun de Chignor makes a very good base.
