The site deserves to be better known - the owners call it a "relaxed" site (we didn't see the owners but replies to email queries were prompt), we found its "back to nature" vibe very relaxing.
The bird life (sight & sound) was astonishing, and the dark night skies were magnificent - you'll need a (phone) torch for getting down to the loos at night, they do have electric lights. You can hire bikes, kayaks etc, buy wood for the fire pits & borrow BBQs; there's free Wi-Fi at the information hut, we didn't test it, mobile signal ok.
The "Hensol walk" to Loch Ken was very enjoyable, with beautiful groves of mature trees along the drive; the RSPB hides at the end were permanently closed, but there are viewing areas.
We were in a pod for the first time, rather than our MH, as we needed the car. We would stopover here in the MH, although the site fees are a tad more than other sites in the area, because of the relaxed atmosphere, the walks, night sky and birds to see & hear. A choice of H/S or grass pitches with EHU,
The lower pitches each had a water pipe, the upper grass EHU pitches by the drystane dyke near the pods had no water - but they had the views & the "wild camping" feel, so we'd go there next time. No CDP however, which might limit our time here.
The large adjacent field had PYO pitches for tents and non-EHU campervans, with its own toilet facilities. Toilets for the pitches & pods were all unisex, opening to the outside, spotlessly clean & well ventilated, the sinks only have cold water. Excellent (unisex) showers, would benefit from a plastic stool. Pot wash generous with commercial-type kitchen tap; allow time for the gas to heat the hot water. No recycling.
The "dog pod" (she was allowed) was basic- a bed platform, electric heating, microwave, toaster, kettle, a water tap, "sitooterie" and fire pit. It suited us fine for a few days. We packed most of our tent camping gear but forgot the folding chairs (mistake, pod seating isn't that comfortable). Needed c. £10 per day in £1/£2 coins for the leccy meter, only because it was near to freezing at night; no heating is much cheaper.
We strongly recommend the Red Kite Feeding Station nearby, east of Laurieston - arrive 1:00 for 2:00 feeding, stay to 4:00 as the Kites keep coming back: seeing and hearing over 100 Kites wheeling overhead is awesome. Also worth half a day is the Raiders Road (£3 toll), with walks along the route, and toilets & tables at the Otter Pool; the unsurfaced not a problem in a MH, as Forest & Land Scotland have a "stay the night" area here.
Nice big spacious pitches. Fairly laid back approach. Very friendly.
Very peaceful location. Make sure you take a head torch as it is pitch black (yip, I know, dark sky park would suggest it would be).
Toilets and showers are clean although some of the fittings are showing some wear and I'm not sure how they'll stand up to the heavy use of a campsite of the season.
There's a constant battle with grass cuttings that your shoes pick up.
Under cover bike parking if you manage to get a space.
No shops or anything near, not an issue if you prep in advance.
There is no check in, just select your pitch, if you can remember what you booked. There's potential for no mobile signal and WiFi wasn't operational on our visit, which added to the peaceful nature of our visit.
Other members of our group were in pods and they described them as basic, plus additional cost for electricity.
Vans and tents do get a better deal. It suited our needs for the trip. I feel fairly indifferent about a return trip. I would look elsewhere first, but would return if it was only suitable option. via mobile
