Spoiler alert: Switzerland is expensive! Sites seem few and far between in this beautiful country, and everything from pitch fees to daily groceries and eating out are noticeably pricier than neighbouring European countries. Buy hey, its Switzerland, so quit moaning and enjoy your holiday!
Camping Vitznau is a cracking location to enjoy the very best of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding area. Do you know any other site where, on foot, you can go and catch a grand ferry to Lucerne, or take the cog railway up Rigi mountain, or even a little cablecar up into the hills for scenic walks?
The site is very well kept, with excellent facilities for families, and is noticeably busier at weekends with seasonal pitch holders.
When booking, study the site plan carefully, and request a pitch on the higher terraces which have stunning views over the lake.
Apart from Lucerne itself (and what a beautiful and compact city it is) there are so many places to visit, that we ran out of time. (e. G. Engelberg, Zug, Gersau)
Vitznau has a little supermarket and some bars and restaurants, with more substantial options down the road in Weggis.
But its always the lake that grabs your attention. We miss it, even now.
