Tempted to book a week after reading the review in Cool Camping.
The site comprises some seventy pitches (twenty one ‘on’ the river bank), twelve Mobil-Homes, seven Chalet PODs, five Lodges and three Tipis.
The site is split in two by the Chemin de Stevenson (Robert Louis Stevenson bivouacked here on his ‘donkey travels’) … the narrow road/footpath provides a picturesque four km walk to Florac alongside the river Tarn.
The ‘resident’ structure (Mobil Homes, Lodges, Pods and Tipis) form a pleasant area … sort of ’village’ feel … a few camping pitches interspersed … The Tipis are huge with two storey interiors and recently installed.
On site is a pleasant Bar/Restaurant set up, undercover, half with sliding panels for weather protection if necessary … service is good … menu is largely Pizzas and Burgers with some local dishes … OH had a goodish steak, me a duck burger on a soggy bun … perfectly palatable, but not outstanding … their best bottle of red, at twenty euros, was certainly not worth it. We thought the restaurant in Bedoues (1 km) was a little better.
The ablutions are undergoing a transformation … all the old doors (cubicles) had been taken out and new ones installed … the rendering around the doors has yet to be re-done, so all looks a bit of a mess. The set up is not modern, but, decently serviced … all unisex. Some showers are very good, others less so … part of the work in progress. Two good sized washing machines.
The small ablutions unit amongst the Tipis etc is brand new (3 showers, 3 loos, 1 hand basin).
There is a sandy beach area along part of the river bank furnished with half a dozen weathered wooden loungers, and the large pool below the old bridge provides good splashing about and swimming area, though not very deep. Great for kids.
A little further down the campsite, along the riverside pitches, there are a range of flat rock formations jutting out into the river, creating a variety of opportunities for water fun or just lying in the sun. There is no doubt that the riverside pitches do offer a much enhanced experience.
A good BBQ area, which was much used (two units).
Two, slightly unevenly set up, table tennis units next to a children’s play area with a couple of structures for climbing etc.
The river isn’t really navigable from the campsite (July) … and no kayak hire operations this high up the Tarn … The main centre is at the beautiful medieval town of St Enimie, clinging to the sides of the Tarn Gorge. From there you can choose from multiple options: ranging from a couple of hours to two days trips down the river, which is very pleasant with some stunning views, though no real challenges for the thrill seeking paddler … but absolutely safe and ideal for first timers and occasional boaters and for the ambience/views. Do not expect a ride as exciting as that of the Gorges D’Ardeche!
Plenty of scenery to drive to/through … along the Gorge … and lovely towns/vilages to mooch around. Florac, Ispagnac, Montbraun and St Enimie being but a few within easy driving time.
There is free WiFi around the reception area (undercover tables/chairs) … reception serves coffee and bakery (if early enough) … or order the day before … a few consumables and local drinks.
The staff and management were extremely friendly and helpful. They arranged for immediate service from the local garage when we had a problem with our towing link. All was sorted within a couple of hours.
It’s fair to say that the week we spent there (early August) was unusually cold, windy and showery, for the most part … which undoubtedly reduced our enjoyment of the site.
