As other reviews have indicated, a bit strange. Turned up, tried to book in. Another camper said 'He'll find you'.
Put the tent up, sure enough, the owner manager turned up, was paid, & went off. Affable enough. No receipt or tent ticket.
The loo's & washing facilities in the field portable cabin were awful. No hot water, & one was unsure as to whether the loo would remain on the floor.
The next night a 'regular' advised that there was a shower in the building adjoining the house, & one in the main house itself. Went to have a shower. No locks on the door.
We stayed at Knapp House for 1 night in a tent. There were many mobile homes and caravans in varying states, with a few people on the campsite who were very helpful and friendly. Otherwise the campsite was a strange experience, everything seeming run down and in need of a bit of work. There was a toilet block in a portakabin on the field, however some of the taps did not work, there was no hot water, no toilet roll and it could have done with a good clean. Further facilities were available at the main house, but were not a lot better. The showers were flooded with water that appeared to be seeping from the base of the toilets next door. These toilets were pretty much unusable, but there was toilet paper in the gents. The other showers were communal with no curtain and no lock on the door. Also, be sure to put your rubbish in the trailer, not in the bin as you would expect, or you may well be shouted at by a very angry man. All in all a weird experience but certainly a talking point!
Rang up to book and was told yep just turn up and pitch and we'll come and see you which was a good start as its nice to find your own space without pressure. The site is a large field on a slight slope. Although the top of the hill is steeper it was also much drier (we got stuck in the lush green and very sodden grass at the bottom and had to be towed out by owners 4x4) The site was lovely and quiet which meant our woofie had lots of space to play when let off the lead. Best of all the price for a tent is £6 per night plus £2 per adult. You pay for what you get as the toilet block in the field is a portacabbin with no lighting, no loo roll and only 2 of the 4 sinks worked. No hot water for dish washing either. So we would walk a little further and use the showers and washing facilities belonging to the main house (adventure centre)I would describe these as functional though the showers were free. Most tents stayed for a couple of nights tops. The facilities were a bit waring after a week. The owner was very relaxed and easy going and came round every other morning to make sure all was well.
Appledore was stunning and about 5 minutes drive away. This is the only site near to Appledore for camping. And Instow is just the other side of the estuary with a lovely beach and sand dunes and view of Appledore. Northam has all local amenities needed. We found the whole area to be attractive and so quiet compared to Cornwall with lovely friendly people.
If you are just looking for a nice quiet spot to camp without clubs, children's play areas and at a good price then this should suffice.
Quiet site close to Westwood Ho and Appledore. Field sloping with electric hook up in centre of field. Quite a few stored caravans which are looking a bit grubby and unused. Toilet block in field is a bit old and was could do with a good clean, also for the two nights we were there it had no toilet roll. There is a shower near the outdoor rec centre with toilets but again it could of done with cleaning better and the floor mopping. The water was nice and hot though. The owner is friendly and comes around in his van to collect the money.
This award winning Adults Only campsite has a working 17th century watermill in a peaceful wooded valley within the Exmoor National Park. Grass and hardstanding pitches, all set beside the River Exe or the sparkling mill stream, with electric, water, drainage, and TV hook-ups. A leisurely stroll up to a weir, and an area where dogs may run free and splash in the river.
Facilities include the beautiful dog walk, free wifi, fishing, modern toilet and shower block, dog wash, working watermill (tours on most Sunday mornings), salmon pass on the weir, shop, bus service, and excellent pubs in the locality. The site has beautiful views, an abundance of wildlife and many footpaths leading directly to the Exmoor woodlands and rivers. Find out more here
A friendly quite place with access to Bideford, Westward Ho and Barnstaple. Yes! it's on a sloop but the showers, toilets, free use of the washing machine and drying room makes up for it. The owner with his staff are friendly, when the weather is bad they open the swimming pool up, which is god send especially when you have 6 children sitting in the tent screaming and fighting. There is an adventure park and good walks to Appledore and Northam.
June 2004 Site is handy for Bideford, Northam, Westward Ho, Appledore and Instow. 5 acres partly sloping, caravans, campers and tents. Site is also outdoor pursuits centre. Toilet block clean but rough condition. No shops etc. No chemical disposal point
