Please note we have been advised that this site has closed, and no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches. If you know that this situation has changed in the future, please could you let us know. Many thanks
We booked in for 2 weeks, with electric hook up, though left early to move to another site. When we stayed, the field was quite busy with several caravans, motor homes and tents probably 6-10 pitches per night over the week or so we were there.
The pool is obviously the main attraction, however, due to bad weather post hurricane (plus the site is on a hill and prone to strong winds) my husband and I found it too cold to swim, though our son was able to stand it, partly due to swimming up and down at speed. The one time we all went in, we needed a hot shower to warm up afterwards. Unfortunately the only two showers were both cold. Despite talking to the owners about this, there was not hot water again during the day. There was some mention of a boiler problem, but strangely there was hot water morning and evening. I'm sure it would be fine if the weather was good but this could have been remedied if the hot water was on constantly, as most camp sites do. There are only 2 toilets and each of these have the showers in them. This was not adequate for the number of people staying at the site, as we usually had to queue for 20 minutes or so. If you want to 'go' at peak shower time, you can be caught short! Families would all go in at once, which is fair enough, but time consuming when you are waiting, so an extra toilet would be really useful. Or take your own motor home.
The sun room next to the pool was useful, with books, some seating and a few games. Excellent for when you were waiting for the facilities to keep warmish and dry!
The washing up facilities here are basic- a cold water tap and sink open entirely to the elements in one corner of the field. If it is raining you will get very very wet- no shelter at all and it was pretty miserable. Along with other campers, we would carry hot water from the shower room to do the washing up.
The honesty system was a nice touch but limited, with a few items such as bread and ice cream and some seasonal veg. The cost of the laundry was pretty steep, other campers there had mentioned this, so we only used it the once.
Mayrose has potential, but without adequate washing up facilities and more toilets or a separate toilet, we do not feel it was worth the cost per night.
Just back from a fab 12 days on this site. Highlights were:
1) the owners who were charming
2) only 5 pitches across a large area so the 6 of us with a large tent had more than enough elbow room and the facilities were under no real pressure even in August.
3) the pool is set in an attractive and sheltered courtyard where you'd be happy to spend time here even if you didn't fancy a swim!
4) the showers were like your en-suite at home with a loo, basin, decent sized cubicle and a radiator!
5)games room has a double aspect over the garden on one side and pool on the other, where there is a large glass canopy.
6) the animals were great for out younger kids and the small lake/large pond with the adjacent firepit were great for alfresco dining away from our tent
7) the small shop was great for essentials like milk, eggs etc. And a small selection of goodies such as Freddo bars, and you can even order fresh croissants for the following morning
8) the A39 is situated within easy reach but not too close, so good access to lots of places along the Atlantic Coast.
Dish washing is 'character-building', currently an open twin sink in the corner of the field, slightly out of sync with the excellence of everything else.
Overall highly recommended but make sure there is space for us when we re-visit!
Mayrose has a great family campsite. It's a small field with very few pitches so ideal for that quiet escape.
We all loved the gorgeous sheltered pool, with high standard toilets and showers. Always clean and just by a striking quiet games room with pool table and books to borrow. It's somewhere with fab views to sit on a wet day too.
The owners are very child friendly and you can order freshly baked croissant for breakfast.
The showers etc are not for use by cottage guests, only campsite guests. Cottages have their own facilities.
We found campers were made very welcome were encouraged to roam and make use of the entire 18 acre site. We will book again.
Mayrose is a great basic family campsite. It's is simply a small field with about 15 pitches including some statics- our pitch had EHU.
Very child friendly and in dry weather would be ideal. Unfortunately we chose a week of near non-stop rain and the tail end of Hurricane Bob which led to our early departure nursing bent tent poles! This was not however the fault of the campsite.
It should be noted that the washing up facilities here are basic- a cold water tap and sink open entirely to the elements in one corner of the field. If it is raining you will get very very wet- there was, at the time of our visit no shelter at all and it was pretty depressing!
The toilet and shower facilities were limited and did not really cater for the number of people staying at the site and we usually had to queue for 20 minutes or so. Unfortunately there were no wc's without showers, so if you want to 'go' at peak shower time you can be left hopping about from leg to leg!
Our children loved the gorgeous sheltered pool which they used even in the pouring rain!. Adjacent to the pool and shower area was a lovely games room with pool table and books to borrow and this proved to be a great shelter in the high winds and slashing rain coming in daily from the moor!
The site has a laundry room and drying racks which were invaluable. Also a small shop with an honesty box.
Generally a nice site, but NOT for fair weather campers- you are stuck if it rains!
The owners are very child friendly and you can order freshly baked croissant for breakfast.

Set in nice scenery with farm animals for the kids to feed and look at and with nice cottages to rent. There is a small shop with an honesty box for most of the time It is just off the main road, however you do need to drive to get to any quality beaches, nearest Polzeath and Rock, both of which get extremely busy during summer, in fact we had to abandon our trip to Rock as we couldn't get anywhere near to the Car Park or a space on the side road.
We had a large tent and although we had a semi-choice of pitch this was not an advantage as the pitches were all much alike, in fact when we got there there was some confusion as to whether we had a pitch even though we had booked. The shower facilities are actually the changing rooms for the pool which is also used by the cottage guests, therefore if someone was having a shower you could not use the toilet and vice versa. We were lucky the weather was bad and some people had cancelled. Also the toilet frequently ran out of paper. The washing up facilities was actually a sink at the edge of the field attached to a cold stand pipe with no cover (fun seeing as it was raining for a week.
Site was clean and tidy but we felt that the camping field was just a sideline to the cottage rentals and was treated as such.
We enjoyed our stay despite this but would not visit again.
