Campsite has now closed.
As of 1st April 2011, the campsite and camping barn will be open for pre-arranged educational events only. The facilities will no longer be open for general public use.
A basic campsite that would suit people who don't require too many home comforts (a hot shower being one of them!) and would prefer a quiet site with good access to the coast and countryside. It cost us £9 for two people and a tent for one night collected early morning by a nice warden (the only time you'll most likely see someone official on site).
Firstly, if you are coming by car the nearest you can park is just over a mile away in a car park with its obvious risks of overnight stay. This also means that everything you take has to be carried that distance - a concrete surface makes up a majority of the route so something with even small wheels may help. Car parking adds to the costs as you have to buy a ticket for each day (£3.50) and every night you stay (£5). You can take your cycles up to the site (and get a discount for it too).
The campsite is away from the main walking routes and with no cars remains quiet (they have quite a few rules to discourage noise/large groups, etc). The small field gently slopes down from the barn with some beautiful views of the rolling countryside. There are a couple of horses on one side and cows to the other two (all fenced off!). Lot's of wildlife to be seen, including owls, butterflies, beetles, rabbits, crickets, etc.
You can stay in the barn which is quite large, basic and well done out but remember your sleeping mats for the hard surface of the large sleeping platforms. This would suit cyclists who want to save lugging a tent around. It has lockers too which campers can use for a £1 deposit. There are timed heaters in the barn.
The facilities are a cold shower (disabled friendly), four toilets and and two simple cold water basins and a freshwater tap. There is a cooking area (sideboard under a roof), some picnic tables and cycle railings and emergency telephone.
The large and okay Golden Galleon pub is a mile away if you take the shortest route where you can get a okay meal if your tastes are not fussy. The sea is about the same distance the other way where a large stoned beach is pleasant if a bit tough on the feet - some footwear you can wear in the water will help paddlers. The Seven Sisters with Beachy Head is also a solid but acheivable climb away. The Cuckmere Valley is generally a lovely place to amble or cycle around.
Alfriston is a nice village to pass through and maybe have a short nose around. Drusillas Zoo is a good visit and the English Wine Centre is a bit of a grand title but a place where you can enjoy some English wine tasting (pre book) and have a lunch included.
In all a peaceful little site in a wonderful location where a short stay would reward those who don't mind a few days of simple facilities.
This site is expensive for the facilities provided. (£4.50 pppn) If you arrive by public transport you get £1 discount. A unisex shower is provided, but with no hot water supply, it is freezing cold. There is no washing up sink, just 2 hand basins with no hot water. The toilets are metal. A bit embarrassing if other people are nearby. I would say it is a very basic backpackers site. You are only allowed to stay for 3 nights & believe me that is all you can stand given the facilities. Also, you are woken up at 8.30 sharp by a park ranger, who collects your camping fee.
However having said that, it does have some good points. It isn't a commercial site. There were no chavs to contend with. There is a nice undercover cooking area with picnic tables. If the camping barn hasn't been booked, you can sit in there if the weather is bad. It is heated by timed push button switches & small heaters. Also it is located right in the middle of one of Sussex's most wonderful locations, the Seven Sisters. In fact it is run by the Seven Sisters Country Park. This is possibly why it is expensive for what you get.
There is a pub called the Golden Galleon about a mile away along the Cuckmere River towpath, but I wouldn't recommend it. It is part of the Vintage Inn chain & serves lousy reheated food. The staff are very miserable & unhelpful. It also gets very busy & it takes ages to get served.
I highly recommend Exceat Farmhouse tea room & restaurant, which is about a mile away. They serve delicious scones & tea. Worth staying just for that & of course the glorious views.
