Please note we have been advised that this campsite at this location is now permanently closed, and no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches. The hostel itself is still running.
"With great regret we have to advise that camping is no longer possible at our Hostel on the Isle of Berneray. The hostel is surrounded by active croft land which is not owned by the Gatliff Hebridean Hostels Trust. It is also not possible, for practical reasons, to camp on the hostel plot."
I can honestly say that this is the best place I've camped. I only stayed one night but intend returning for an extended stay.
Camping is only £8 per night which allows you use of the hostel facilities. The converted 'black house' has an excellent kitchen/dining area with two large cookers. All cutlery, pots & pans are provided. There was even herbs & spices along with ketchup etc.
No advance bookings are taken but this doesn't matter as the campsite is the sand dunes which extend for miles. A lovely place and very well ran.
We have now visited this site three times. It is open all year and we found that the little restored thatched cottages which make up the hostel provided excellent emergency shelter one April night during strong winds, the thick walls cutting out the sound of the weather. Be prepared for strong winds at any time of the year as tents can be damaged if in an exposed position.
The charge for camping is now £8 per person (of any age) per night, which would work out expensive for families but not so bad for a single camper.
The kitchen area in the hostel was cleaner on this latest visit than we have seen previously. Once again we did not meet the warden but left our money in the honesty box. There are some power points in the hostel (handy for phone charging and hairdryers) and a fridge for the use of campers and hostellers. The stove burns coal (which was provided when we were there), not wood as I mentioned in my last review.
The shower and toilet facilities are just as basic. One toilet seat was held together with duct tape and the water to the shower is cut off whenever someone flushes a toilet. However, this site is all about location and so people return year after year.
Camping is on a grassy stretch surrounding the hostel and overlooking beautiful white sands and turquoise waters. There is only really one road on Berneray, leading across a causeway from North Uist and running round the east side of this small island. With just one or two dead end side roads leading off, it's impossible to get lost.
We found the site quiet, with a small handful of campers scattered at widely spaced intervals around the area. There is no booking and no marked pitches - just find a space amongst the sheep.
We never saw the warden but left our payment (£6 per person per night) in a box in the hostel which allowed us the use of the facilities (apart from sleeping). We couldn't see any notices listing the charges, and only knew because we had looked up the website in advance.
Berneray hostel consists of two little whitewashed thatched cottages. In addition to the sleeping rooms, one building has a large communal room with a long wooden table, a wood burning stove, sink, power point, cooking facilities and lots of crockery while the other contains a shower, a couple of toilets and an outdoor water tap. It's basic, but adequate.
There were lots of flies in the toilet/shower area when we were there. If the weather is too rough for camping the hostel costs £10 a night for adults and £6 for children.
The views and the peace and quiet are priceless. From our tent we could watch the sunrise and saw otters swimming in the bay. If we returned we would take good binoculars. A road leading to the west side of the island passed through flower-strewn machair land to a long white deserted beach where we sat and watched the sunset.
North Uist is just a few minutes away. There is a shop and petrol at Lochmaddy and good meals served in the Lochmaddy Hotel.
