Please note we have been advised that this site no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches, and now offers holiday lodge ownership only. If you know that this situation has changed in the future, please could you let us know. Many thanks
We stayed here over the August bank holiday weekend, mainly to 'road test' our new tent.
When we arrived, there were several tents and caravans already on site, but didn't seem to be anyone around to direct us. There was, however, a sign, telling us to set up and wait for the owner to appear. As it happened, he appeared within 5 minutes, made sure we were happy with the pitch we had chosen, and left us to get the tent up. We did see him as he wandered around the site a couple of times per day, to check everyone was ok, which was nice, and he was happy to stop and have a chat.
The site itself is lovely. It's sheltered and flat. For a tent, it's perfect! The electric hookup is included in the price, as they have their own wind turbines to provide power. Not all pitches have electric access though. The facilities are good. There are 2 spacious showers, a disabled wetroom, and separate mens and ladies toilets. All seemed to be of a good standard, and all were kept clean. However, one criticism. My wife is disabled, and she found that when using the wetroom, there was nowhere to hang towel/clothes while showering. There was also no lid on the toilet, so she struggled whilst getting changed with no seating There is also a sink for washing up, and a washing machine should you need it. In a room to one side, there is a pool table. Wi-fi is also provided free of charge, which is a nice touch.
As for location, it's not far from Wisbech and Downham Market. Kings Lynn is around half an hour away, so it's a good base if you want to explore the area.
Although we only stayed a couple of nights, the site has impressed us, and we will be back for a longer holiday soon.
We have just returned from a weekend camping visit to Lode Hall. Bearing in mind is 10 miles from Downham Market, 12 miles from Wisbech and is basically in the middle of no-where; we shall be visiting again. It’s an adult only site, the main field level as it used to be a cricket pitch with some hedges and willow planted to act as a windbreak. We had electric hook up and used their wifi connection (not the fastest but sufficient).
The shower toilet block has been converted to from the cricket pavilion and is a good standard looks as if it was remodelled recently. Clean with plenty of hot water, roomy shower cubicles. I used the disabled one just to see what it was like; a good sized wet room. The showers are mixed so no separate mens or ladies but there were mens and ladies toilets and a pool table that was free if you wanted to play. There is a sink there for you to wash-up and a washing machine installed, all free. All clean and tidy.
A good array of info leaflets around with menus from local takeaways (we sampled a local Indian and Chinese, yum), local newspaper cuttings of proprietor who called by to see if everything was OK. He is a keen environmentalist who is encouraging the birdlife to thrive. There is a lot of information regarding the wildlife surrounding Lode Hall. We were all delighted to hear the local tawny owl hooting at night. My friends took their dog, and there is plenty of space to take him for a walk.
Ideal camp site for exploring the Fens, it’s fairly quiet. Some noise due to the time of year and harvesting going on and when the wind was blowing we could hear some noise from the main road, sound does carry, but nothing that greatly disturbed us.
Downham Market is where we chose to buy takeaway meals has a Tesco, Morrison’s and Iceland to shop in. The locals are friendly and told us there were 4or 5 Chinese takeaways, 3 Indian takeaways and a Thai place.
Would we go back there? Yes we will next year. I am surprised no-one has reviewed this camp site before. Maybe those that have been wanted to keep it for themselves. Remember it’s adult only.
